And what more shall I say? For the time is insufficient for me to give a detailed account regarding Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, and Samuel and the prophets, who through faith defeated kingdoms, brought about justice, obtained promised things, kept the mouths of lions shut, extinguished the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, were empowered when they were weak, became mighty in war, turned to flight the battle lines of foreign enemies; women received their dead sons back by resurrection.
But others were tormented, not welcoming their deliverance, in order to experience a better resurrection. And others experienced mocking and scourging, and additionally, chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in half, they died by being murdered with a sword, they wandered about in sheepskins, in goatskins, being in need, being afflicted, being mistreated, of whom the world was not worthy, wandering in deserts and on hills and in caves and holes in the ground.
And all these, although they were well spoken of by their faith, did not come into possession of what was promised, since God has provided something better for us, in order that they might not be brought to the goal without us.
CJB of v. 40:

because God had planned something better that would involve us, so that only with us would they be brought to the goal.
