Prepare the Way

Bible Passage: Jn 3:22–36

Summary: In this passage, John the Baptist reflects on his ministry and the significance of Jesus, emphasizing that his role was to prepare the way for the Messiah. His humility in acknowledging the supremacy of Christ serves as a powerful testament to the importance of giving glory to God.
Big Idea: Our lives should reflect the glory of Christ, as we prepare the way for others to encounter Him, just as John the Baptist did.
Recommended Study: As you prepare, consider diving into the context of John's ministry and its prophetic significance. Use Logos to explore various commentaries that discuss the relationship between John's baptism and Jesus’ ministry. Look into the Greek text to delve deeper into the meanings of terms like 'increase' and 'decrease' to enrich your understanding of John’s humility in relation to Christ.

1. Jealousy: A Barrier to Christ

Jn 3:22-26
John the Baptist’s disciples were seemingly jealous that Jesus and His disciples were getting more people to baptize than they were.
It is all about giving the Lord all the glory.

2. Christ gets all the glory

Jn 3:27-30
John pointed out that 'He must increase, but I must decrease.'
John's humility in accepting his role as a forerunner reflects the essence of preparing the way for Christ.
This attitude can inspire believers to focus on promoting Jesus' fame rather than seeking personal accolades.

3. Supremacy: Christ Above All

Jn 3:31-36
Testimony of John concerning the supremacy of Christ.
As John attests to Jesus, he points to the ultimate authority of the Son of God.
Recognizing Jesus as the eternal truth and life that transcends human authority.

4. Conclusion: The Great Commission

As the ultimate authority Christ gives us a command....
Matthew 28:19–20 NASB95
“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
As believers it is our command to go out and tell EVERYONE about Jesus!
As we all become believers, we become disciples.
