Continuing our Series Giftings …

-1 Corinthians 12:7–10 Giftings until Jesus returns here on earth!

-We spoke on Wisdom, Knowledge, Faith (Last Week) gifts of healings…

WE HAVE TWO MORE WEEKS ON THIS!

DISCLAIMER* I am speaking on some very tough topics… This week I am speaking on Tongues and next week I am speaking on Prophecy & Deliverance.

Both of these aren’t addressed in Churches enough and often have a negative cognitation or churches don't want to lean a certain way to have a stance. BUT at DFC, we want to address these and teach exactly what the bible says in order to live up to our name!

*I might say something that you may not agree with! I would love to have a conversation, but here is my only request we only refer to scripture*

2 Timothy 3:16 “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,”

Why would we need another book to explain what God meant?!

My prayer is that you are slow to speak and quick to hear. Don’t let your past rob you of learning a gift God has for you for a time right now! PRAY!

TODAY I WANT TO ADDRESS 6 Questions...

First Question: Are tongues for me? Am I allowed to want to speak them?

-YES! They are for you! Its a spiritual Gift we are to be practicing before the second coming!

It’s part of the Great Commission!

Mark 16:15–17 “And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues;”

Jesus makes this charge for you! He is clear on the order… Just like I said a couple of weeks ago…

-Jesus was filled with the spirit THEN the miracles came

-He says here, “Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues;”

Second Question: Wasn’t speaking in Tongues only for the Disciples?

-Acts 2 Amazing Story! Spirit fell like a rushing wind Disciples began to speaking in tongues… Miracle took place because people began to hear their own language!

-But to answer the question… Tongues were for the disciples but they are also for you!

We see scriptures and evidence of this in our very own lineage!

Ephesus Church - Cornelious’ House

-Peter is sharing the Gospel… Then something happened

Acts 10:44–46 “While Peter was still saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the word. And the believers from among the circumcised who had come with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out even on the Gentiles. For they were hearing them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter declared,”

OBJECTION: Well…. Peter was a Disciple…

My question back is was Paul a disciple???

Acts 19:1–6 “And it happened that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the inland country and came to Ephesus. There he found some disciples. And he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” And he said, “Into what then were you baptized?” They said, “Into John’s baptism.” And Paul said, “John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, Jesus.” On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking in tongues and prophesying.”

We are coming back to this Passage!

Third Question: Shouldn’t there be order? If it isn’t translated, it wasn’t tongues…

Some Believe, tongues are just other languages.

TWO PIECES TO THIS QUESTION!!!

Should there be order… YES

If it wasn’t translated, it wasn’t tongues… WRONG!

LET ME EXPLAIN…

1 Corinthians 14:2–5 “For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit. On the other hand, the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation. The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the church. Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but even more to prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be built up.”

THE TWO TYPES OF TONGUES

PERSONAL: Prayer Time, Personally I have a prayer language! You might hear me use it as I am praying!

1 Corinthians 14:4 “The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the church.”

You want to see miracles, speaking in tongues removes me out the equation when I am praying for someone!

IT’S EVIDENCE YOU HAVE BEEN FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT ITS NOT THE ONLY EVIDENCE THOUGH!!!

PROPHETIC (PUBLIC): This is used to build up the church or the people that are there

1 Corinthians 14:26–28 “What then, brothers? When you come together, each one has a hymn(Worship), a lesson(Message), a revelation(LOGOS WORD), a tongue(PRAYER), or an interpretation(PUBLIC TONGUES) . Let all things be done for building up. If any speak in a tongue (Public), let there be only two or at most three, and each in turn, and let someone interpret. But if there is no one to interpret, let each of them keep silent in church and speak to himself and to God.”

I do believe that their are times where a public (prophetic tongue) will come up! But I also am crazy enough to believe that the Holy Spirit will bring a translation!

ME PERSONALLY, I haven’t had that gift of Public Tongue but if its a Gift for our church, I want it! I don’t want to miss anything that comes from the Holy Spirit!

The way we incorporate in our service like Paul said is with Order and our order is driven by LOVE!

Fourth Question: But why practice this spiritual gift?

Follow up Question who is it for?

1 Corinthians 14:21–22 “In the Law it is written, “By people of strange tongues and by the lips of foreigners will I speak to this people, and even then they will not listen to me, says the Lord.” Thus tongues are a sign not for believers but for unbelievers, while prophecy is a sign not for unbelievers but for believers.”

The reason we are open to speaking in Tongues is so that the unbeliever can have encounters with the Holy Spirit!

Fifth Question: When should we practice this gift?

ALL THE TIME! BUT we do it to keep the Unbeliever in mind!

1 Corinthians 13:1–2 “If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.”

ANOTHER SCRIPTURE SAYS IT THIS WAY

1 Corinthians 14:1–3 “Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy. For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit. On the other hand, the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation.”

*Two promises* - FROM ME TO DFC

If we have a public encounter at DFC, we will explain the gift that took place!

If I am praying for the unbeliever I will constantly check my Spirit to be sure I am out of self and be obedient to the Spirit!

WHO ARE WE TO PUT LIMITS ON GOD?

WE RECOGNIZE THESE GIFTS ARE FOR US…

BUT WE STILL PERSUE THEM CAUTIOUSLY.

WHICH CAUSES US TO GET IN THE WAY OF THE SPIRIT....

We say things like, “Charsmatic with a seatbelt!”

I am crazy enough to take off the seatbelt and let the Spirit move why? BECAUSE it removes us from the equation and we begin to fully lean on GOD and the Giftings He was to see!

At this church we allow the Holy Spirit to drive the car or fly the plane!

IF JESUS, THE DISCIPLES, PAUL, and OTHER LEADERS in the Church need the Holy Spirit, how much more do we to be guided by the Spirit!?

-I want to see people set free

-Miracles take place in families

-Demons casted out

-Prophesies received

-People Speaking in tongues

BUT IN ORDER TO SEE THESE THINGS WE GOT TO LET THE SPIRIT DRIVE!

WHERE CHARISMATIC CHURCHES SOMETIMES FALL SHORT IS THEY FORGET WHO THE GIFTS ARE FOR!

WHEN WE RECOGNIZE THE GIFTS ARE FOR THE NON BELIEVER WE ELIMINATE CONFUSION BY SHOWING LOVE AND COMPASSION!

Sixth Question: Can I ask for this gift?

YES! Two things first, you must be Filled with the Holy Spirit!

Then ask!

Earlier in the sermon I mentioned…Speaking in Tongues EVIDENCE YOU HAVE BEEN FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT ITS NOT THE ONLY EVIDENCE THOUGH!!!

Let me share my story….

-At a very young age I was baptized in the Holy Spirit, and immediately started uttering words…

-I persued after Christ and I just couldn’t get more tongues out.

-I can remember at least ten times being Baptized in the Holy Spirit and not speaking in tongues

-I always asked the Holy Spirit but didn’t receive the gift and that was ok! ( I was in a denomination that said that the evidence of being filled in the Holy Spirit was speaking in tongues so everytime I didn't speak in tongues, I became a target) OR my encounters were tested..

-I received my prayer language right before I got married at age 20.

-BUT I ASKED A LOT!

-I don’t know the reason why I didn’t get it in those moments but I know I love it to have something to use when I dont have the words to say…

TODAY, I want to make room for those who want this gift, everyone in here heard about it and I hope you learned out of love today! It you want this gift the two things you may be asking for is a Filling of the Holy Spirit (ENCOUNTER WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT) or speaking in tongues..
