Good Morning Church…

Glad to be back worshipping with you all…
Let me ask a question to the Christ followers in the room…(A tough question…so be honest now)
Who in here has sinned today????
What about yesterday???
This week???
Take a minute…examine your actions and words and heart the last 7 days…
Did you lie, cheat, steal, lust, covet, hate this week???
Did I fall to sin???
THE TRUE ANSWER TO THAT QUESTION IS “YES” I SINNED…
How do I know that…Because I did it to…I sinned…I also know it because the bible tells us that our flesh is sinful and as Christ followers we will fall short…
SO WHY DID I FALL TO SIN????
You know that’s the number one question I get within a month after someone has gotten saved…
“WHY AM I STILL FALLING TO SIN???”
Romans 7:21–23 “I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me. For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.”
This flesh….is sinful…thats why we get a new body…in the end…one that is not sinful…
So NOW the question is….
NOT WILL WE SIN AS CHRIST FOLLOWERS…BUT

WHAT DO WE DO WHEN WE SIN???? (As a saved Christ follower…how do we respond)

The Lords going to show us today how He desires us to respond…

OPEN UP TO PSALM 51.

***Going to do something a little different today…we are going to read this Psalm from the KJV version…I like this translation better here, I think its a little easier to understand…You can open up this text in your bible, we will also have the KJV text on the screen behind me…***
Before we dive in though…
Psalm 51 background:
-Written by King David
-He is writing this Psalm in response to something that has happened in his life…
-We can fin out what happened when we read (2 Samuel 11)
-David supposed to be at war...he isn't…He is chillan on his roof top…
-See’s Bath-sheba bathing…he lays with her and she gets pregnant
-the issue: David is married and so is Bath-sheba (Uriah-soldier in army)
-So David freaks out..Send for Uriah tells him to go home for a few days…
-Davids plan is that he will fix this…Uriah will come home…of coarse lay with his wife, he will think this is his baby…and he can hide the fact that they committed adultery…
-BUT Uriah being a good soldier says “my men are sleeping in tents, the ark itself is in a tent, I refuse to go home and sleep in a nice warm bed with my wife”
-David makes a plan to send Uriah to the front lines of the toughest battle so that he will be killed and he can then take Bath-sheba as his wife…to cover up his adultery…and that happens…
Now we find David, the great King, chosen by God, GUILTY OF ADULTERY AND MURDER…
In walks the prophet Nathan…”God knows what you did…”And the Lord is angry about it”
2 Samuel 11:27b “…the thing that David had done displeased the Lord.”
SO David in response write this Psalm…(SIN BROUGHT INTO THE LIGHT)

Read all of Psalm 51.

Break the text down: There are 3 phases or steps that we go through as Christ followers when we have sinned…
We are going to see through David, how we should respond and How the Lord has a desire for the way we respond…

THE REALITY OF SIN (V1-6)

Many months had past before this moment…we know Bathsheba had already bore the child that came out of their adultery.
So David has been stewing in this sin…he had hardened his heart to it…he had been unrepentant…He thinks he has covered it up!!!
But As soon as He is called out by the prophet…he admits…and then the truth begins to spew out of his mouth…Davids spirit begins to speak through him in Psalm 51.
2 Samuel 12:13a “And David said unto Nathan, I have sinned against the Lord…”
Sin’s effect on David:
-He feels covered in it (wash me v2)
-It is a reality for David, he sees it (my sin is before me V3) (its all I see, it stays in front of me)
-He realizes who he sinned against (I have sinned against you Lord V4)
-He see that it is his natural state (in sin was i conceived, i was formed in iniquity v5)
-He knows he is not where God wants him (Verse 6 READ (God desires truth in the inward parts) he isn’t walking in truth but in darkness
-Separated from God (cast me not away v11) (Davids filthy sin has removed him from the presence of the Lord)
He is covered in sin…(look at v2) this is tabernacle talk…to get into the dwelling place of God (holy of Hollies) you first had to be washed clean…
David is filthy with sin and feels his separation….
APPLICATION:
How many of us have ever felt this????
We are children of God…but yet we feel separated from Him when we have sinned…
Wake up and say...Ive been terrible…my mind, my mouth , my heart has been terrible…
IM NOT FEELING VERY CHRISTIAN TODAY…
The Holy Spirit inside us is grieved by our actions…
Here is what we need to see…
DAVID IS BROKEN BY HIS SIN
He feels Alone, filthy, far from God…
Like a child who has failed his Father…who is in trouble and knows it…who feels the guilt of his actions…
This is what it feels like when you sin as a Christ follower…
GRIEF is what David is experiencing…
DAVID IS OUT OF FELLOWSHIP WITH THE LORD…
This is what it looks like to belong to the light but walk in the darkness…
All of us as Christ followers have been here…
SO WHAT DO WE DO???
We shift our focus…(we can sit and dwell on our sin…but that just keeps us right where we are,,in darkness)
We shift our focus from the sins we committed to…

THE FORGIVER OF SIN (V7-12)

David’s focus shifts from his sin…to the only one he know that can forgive his sin…
Notice: all the “I” statements in V1-6 (I sinned, I was shapened, I have done evil)
NOW David is making requests from the Lord. Asking the Lord to work!
Lord YOU!!!
Davids request from God:
-Purge me with Hyssop (Branch used to sprinkle the pure lambs blood on the altar to cleanse sins. David knew only blood could cleanse him)
-Make this dead broken man sing hear joy and gladness and rejoice!
-Hide your face from my sin (don’t see it, cover it up, blot it out!) (REMOVE MY SIN FROM YOU!)
-Make me new! (NEW HEART AND A RENEWED SPIRIT)
-Bring me back to you! (I have been casted out, don’t remove your spirit from me!)
-RESTORE ME! Let me experience the joy of salvation! Uphold me!
This is all work that David realizes he isn't capable of …only God is…
NOTICE: David is taking his sin to the Lord…(your reading the pleas, the confession, of a broken Godly man…)
He tried to fix it himself (having Uriah killed) made it worse (Adam and eve tried to do this to (fig leaves)
For months he has hidden it…ran from it (Adam and eve ran and hid) (Where are you??!!)
DAVID HAS A SIN PROBLEM…ONLY GOD CAN FIX THOSE…
APPLICATION:
What do you do when you fall to sin…
YOU DO WHAT DAVID IS DOING NOW!!!
STEP 1: COME RUNNING BACK TO THE LORD!!!!
Just like David…pull your focus back to the one who saved you from sin and death!!!
I want you to see…
Everything David is asking for …JESUS GAVE US!!!
He cleansed us with His blood…
He made dead bones alive!!!
He covered us…
He made us brand new!
He restored us…cleansed us so we could stand before God…
United us with the Lord…made us the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit…
SEALED US SO WE NEVER HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT BEING CAST AWAY OR LOSING OUR SALVATION…(What God has brought together let no man separate)
HE JUSTIFIED US…HE SAVED US!!!!
HE FORGAVE US!!!
HE GAVE US GRACE!!!!!!
He did the same thing for David!!!
2 Samuel 12:13b “… And Nathan said unto David, The Lord also hath put away thy sin; thou shalt not die.”
DAVID IS EXPERIENCING GRACE!!!!!
A grace that each one of us has experienced!!!!
David didn’t deserve forgiveness and grace…BUT HE GOT IT!!!
Though we were sinners…Christ died for us!!!
We must remember this always!!!
David started out focusing on his sin…
He then moved his focus to the one who could forgive sin…
When we sin we must pull our focus to Jesus…who through our faith in His shed blood…saved us from sin and death…
And we will see as we look to Jesus…the grace and mercy he has for us as His children!!!
When we see that… it will have an effect on us…
We are forgiven!!!!
Nathan told David…”you are forgiven!”
Look how David responds!!!
We see next…

THE PRAISE OF FORGIVENESS (13-15)

The sin had an internal effect…Davids heart is broken over it… (he is crushed)
The forgiveness he experienced however causes an outward effect on David
He shays to the Lord here in verses 13-15
Out of my brokenness…through your salvation…
I WILL PRAIE YOU!
NOT ONLY THAT!!!
I WILL:
-Teach transgressors your ways
-Sing of your righteousness
-Praise you with every word!!
This was a broken man!!!
Who has experienced forgiveness and grace…
NOW he says I will lead the broken to you, I will worship out of it!!!
We lead , we disciple people out of our own brokenness…
We worship the name of Jesus out of our own broken sin…we were sinners, we were dead…BUT YOU GOD MADE US RIGHTEOUS!!!
YOU MADE US ALIVE…AND ONE WITH YOU!!!
And so we disciple…we ambassador…we worship you with a broken and crushed…AND FORGIVEN heart!!!!
And God tells us in His word…this is what he desires…

THE DESIRE OF THE LORD (V16-17)

READ V16-17 AGAIN…
This is the desire of the Lord….
David says you don’t desire sacrifice…
You don’t desire burnt offerings…
YOU DESIRE a broken and contrite heart
Contrite means “to break, bruise , or crush”
When you sin against the Lord…
You come running back to Him…
With a heart broken over sin…
NOT one that makes excuses, not one that blame shifts…
But a heart that knows where it was supposed to be but has veered off the path….
Like a child that has wandered from the light of our Father into a darkness that we don’t belong...
We come running back…scared, and crushed, and ready to tell our father where we have been, and how we NEED HIM TO HELP US!!!…
THIS IS WHAT THE LORD DESIRES US TO DO!!!!!
WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU SIN????
STEP 1: COME RUNNING BACK TO JESUS…
STEP 2: CONFESS YOUR SIN!!!
THATS WHAT DAVID DOES…
THIS IS SUMMED UP IN 1 VERSE IN THE BIBLE…

BIG IDEA: 1 John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

When you have fallen in your flesh…dont run…dont hide…dont wait!!!!
COME RUNNING BACK TO JESUS…CONFESS YOUR SINS TO HIM…EXPERIENCE GRACE!!!!
AND WALK BACK IN FELLOWSHIP WITH HIM…THATS RIGHT WERE YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE!!!!
Dr. Tom Constable Quote: There are two types of forgiveness that the Scriptures reveal. There is judicial forgiveness that every person experiences when he or she trusts in Christ as Savior . God will never condemn believers in Christ to eternal damnation for their sins, because they trust in His Son. However, there is also familial forgiveness. This is the forgiveness that believers need because they offend God. Judicial forgiveness makes us acceptable to God, but familial forgiveness makes us intimate with God. Judicial forgiveness removes the guilt of sin, and familial forgiveness restores the broken fellowship caused by sin.
As Christ followers…when we sin…we fall out of fellowship with the Lord…
Not out of salvation (that is sealed)…but out of fellowship… (1 John 1)
We have walked out of the light into the darkness…Out of fellowship
But when we confess our sin…He brings us back into fellowship with Him!!!!
Psalm 32:5 “I acknowledged my sin unto thee, And mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord; And thou forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah.”
JESUS DIED FOR EVERY SIN YOU HAVE COMMITTED OR WILL COMMIT….
Hear this…None of this is possible without Jesus…
Without His death burial and resurrection…none of this is possible…
You cant have fellowship with God covered in sin…
Jesus made fellowship possible by making us righteous….
So its only fitting that we take time to remember what He did for us…

COMMUNION

Together as a body of believers, we are going to take communion…
We are going to take a little bit more intentional quiet time as a church body to pray and remember Jesus’s death on the cross, the blood spilled that gave us eternal life!
WE ARE GOING TO CONTINUE IN WORSHIP THROUGH COMMUNION…
Now, Communion is a time for those who have placed their faith in Jesus Christ alone.
If you have not trusted Jesus with your eternal salvation, I ask that you not partake, but instead take this time to reflect on the truth that Jesus died for your sins on the cross, and through His resurrection you can live eternally with Him!
SO, YOU CAN COME UP (OR IN THE BACK) TAKE THE JUICE AND THE BREAD…GO BACK TO YOUR SEAT AND TAKE SOME TIME TO REMEMBER AND WORSHIP JESUS FOR WHAT HE DID FOR YOU ON THE CROSS…
THEN WE WILL TAKE THE BREAD AND JUICE TOGETHER AS A BODY…
QUIET PRAYER!! 3-5 MIN
Paul says in 1 Corinthians 11,
“For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for[f] you. Do this in remembrance of me.”[g]
TAKE THE BREAD AND EAT
25 In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”
TAKE THE CUP AND DRINK
PRAY!!
