English Standard Version Chapter 4
Jesus the Great High Priest
14 Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.
BREAKDOWN VERSE
BREAKDOWN VERSE
As the title of the chapter states Jesus is our Great High Priest.
But what does that even mean
In the Old Testament, the high priest was to be a representative and mediator between the people and God.
It was the high priest’s responsibility to see that the covenant was enforced, to communicate between God and His people, to Bless people, etc.
And so Jesus came and fulfilled the law of the Old Testament and has become the final and greatest High priest. Able to do things no other high priest could have.
Ok so what does him being that high priest mean for us in our lives?
Well there are two Key parts of this verse I want to focus in on for that, the first being:
“passed into the heavens”— the heavens which come between us and God,
When Jesus was crucified, died, and rose again, He ascended into heaven (“passed into the heavens”)
Jesus has passed through the heavens — not an earthly priest, but one seated in the heavenly realm.
He did it for us, we don’t have to work for our salvation
You see, in the Old testament only Levitical high priest could pass through the veil into the Holy of Holies. And they could only do it inside the temple.
They also couldn’t take anyone with them.
No other high priest could bring us into this, but Jesus, as our Great High Priest, while we are here on earth is already spiritually, bringing His people into the presence with God.
The second key part to this verse is:
2. “hold fast”
“Let us take hold of our confession,” that is, of the faith and hope which are subjects of our confession
This verse invites us to hold fast to our faith, knowing we are anchored to a perfect Mediator.
When life gets tough, hold on to your faith.
When you cant trust anything else, Trust Jesus,
When your hope is running out, Hold in to hope in Him
when you don’t see any path forward, Hold out for the path he already made for you.

RELATE VERSE TO STORY
RELATE VERSE TO STORY
Jesus has already gone ahead of us — into heaven, into the presence of the Father — and He’s made a way for us to follow.
He’s not just a priest; He’s our priest. He doesn’t just represent people — He represents YOU.
So hold on. Not to your performance. Not to your circumstances.
Hold fast to Him.
And remember as you leave here is week:
POINT ONE
POINT ONE
Because Jesus has done what we never could, we can hold fast to our faith no matter what comes our way.
