Purpose: My hearers should be identify themselves as a servant, study the OT to see Jesus, and know how the hypostatic union was revealed in time.

Introduction

We continue on with the introduction of this great book.

You are a Separated Servant

Romans 1:1 KJV 1900
1 Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God,
Paul is a slave of Jesus.
Paul is called as an apostle of Jesus.
Paul is marked out for purpose of God’s Gospel.
What does “separated” mean? ἀφορίζω: selected out of a group for a purpose
Why is it the preposition “eis’” for into? Is there a word picture here? It marks purpose: paul was marked out for the purpose of the good news of God
What kind of Genitive is theou? It is both a genitive of possession and source.
What do we mean by Gospel?
What is euangellion here? What does it mean for Paul and now for us? This word has two histories: historical and biblical. Historically, it had evolved from meaning simply “good news” to meaning news regarding the Imperial Cult worship of the Emperor. For example, an inscription from 9 BCE says the following: “The birthday of the god [Augustus] was the beginning of the good news (euangelia) for the world.”
Biblically, this word was used in the LXX to reference the Good News of God’s rule coming through the Messiah (Isa. 52.7, a text quoted by Paul in Romans 10.
So ironic that he writes this book to the capital of the Empire.
In Roman imperial context:
Gospel = Pax Romana by Caesar’s sword.
Son of God = Title for the emperor.
Savior of the world = Augustus (emperor of Jesus’ birth, Luke2.1)
Paul hijacks every one of these titles:
Jesus is Son of God (Rom. 1:4)
Jesus is Savior (Phil. 3:20)
Jesus brings true peace (Eph. 2:14)
The rest of verse 2 and then into verse three are clauses that explain more about the Gospel Paul was set apart for.

You are to See the Savior in the Scriptures

Romans 1:2 KJV 1900
2 (Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,)
The Old Testament is about the Gospel (v. 2)
the key here is that this Gospel was “promised previously.”
By whom? “Through his prophets.”
Where do we find these prophecies? “In the Holy Writings.”
Do we know what books the Jews considered as this? Yes: the 66 books we have now.
What does “holy” mean here? These are the Set-Apart Writings. They are not normal books but rather the sacred ones.
Not through magical visions or crystals or tarot cards.
The Gospel is about God’s Son (vv. 3-4)
Romans 1:3–4 KJV 1900
3 Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh; 4 And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:
Peri-any special emphasis? What is the content of the gospel of verse 1? It is concerning God’s Son.
Two phrases for the two stages of Christ’s life: his humiliation and his exaltation. He was born of the seed of David, and his resurrection by the Spirit’s power was the in-time declaration that He was God’s son.
APP: how we distinguish the members of the Trinity, by their outward operations. God wants to be known.
Seed/spermatos, why? Is this a general word or do we have a special signifiance? In the LXX, the Bible of the early church, this is the term used to translate in Gen.3.15. It calls back to all of the ‘seed’ promises of the Bible.
Genesis 3:15 KJV 1900
15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
This is the theme of the entire OT. We are following the Seed to find the Serpent-Crusher.
Genesis 3:15 Woman's seed vs serpent Protoevangelium – Christ promised Genesis 12–22 Seed of Abraham National and singular – Isaac/Christ 2 Samuel 7 Seed of David Royal line – messianic focus Prophets Branch / Son / King Seed as eschatological hope Gospels Virgin-born Son Christ = Seed of woman, Abraham, David Acts & Galatians Fulfillment in Christ Jesus as the Seed of Promise
2 Samuel 7:12 KJV 1900
12 And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom.
Is there a contrast here between his humanity and his divinity? His two natures and their parallel tracks? Yes: he was born of David but declared to be the Son of God.
