RUNNING FOR MY LIFE
RUNNING FOR MY LIFE
Ephesians 9:11
A metaphor is a figure of speech that compares two different things by stating that one is the other, highlighting similarities for emphasis or symbolism. The compared elements are not literally the same but are linked to create a deeper understanding or evoke imagery.
Examples: 1.Work today was a nightmare!
Their bedroom is a pigsty.
Someone at work is a machine.
All the world’s a stage
A structural metaphor is a type of metaphor where one concept (an idea, general notion), often abstract (existing in thought or as an idea but not having physical existence), is understood and described in terms of another, more concrete concept. It provides a structure for understanding and thinking about one concept by using the structure of another. (in this case were going to attempt to show that the word race is the concrete concept describing the abstract concept life)
A concrete concept refers to an idea or object that is tangible and can be experienced through the senses (sight, touch, hearing, taste, smell). It's a real, physical thing or a description of a real thing.
An abstract concept is a thought or idea that cannot be perceived by the five senses or grasped in a tangible form. It's not something that exists as a physical object, but rather as a quality, a feeling, an idea, or a state of being. Examples include concepts like love, justice, truth, hope, and freedom.
conceptual mapping in structural metaphors - In the context of structural metaphors, conceptual mapping refers to the process of understanding a more abstract concept (the target domain) in terms of a more concrete and familiar concept (the source domain). This mapping allows us to use the structure of the source domain to understand the target domain, enabling us to grasp complex and abstract ideas through more concrete examples.
Eccles 9:11 I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all. (Eccles 2:15-17 I hated life)
1 Cor 9:24 Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize ? (Philippians 3:14 - I press toward the mark) So run, that ye may obtain.
(vs: 25-27) 1. temperate- self controlled, self government, disciplined training
Heb 12:1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, ( burden, hindrance)(you’re labouring) and (conjunction “junction”) the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, (the menu)
Race = (conflict, contention, fight, battle, a “contest for a prize”)
2. Lay aside every weight (stop labouring in our own strength) (Matthew 11:28-29)
3. Lay aside “the sin” (lack of faith, not believing God)
4. Run with patience (cheerful (or hopeful) endurance)
Set before us - given, extended, provided (our military orders from God)
Deut. 30: 19 - Set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose
Lev. 17:11 For the life of the flesh is the blood
John 6:35, 48 Bread of life
John 6:53 - Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink, ye have no life in you.
John 6:54 - Whoso eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life : and I wiil raise him up at the last day.
The race “is” found in Jesus!
5. Set your affections on things above. (Colossians 3:2-4)
