Transition Statement

Me: Story of the phone (George)

What happens when we start living like the wrong title actually belongs to us?

We: Spiritually we get mislabeled all the time

The world, our past, or even people mislabel us
And we start to respond to those names that don’t belong to us
But Peter starts this letter with a radical truth… you’re not those names that are put on you, you’re not random, and your story is not random.

God: You were chosen by God on purpose

1 Peter 1:1-2 -
Elect - Eklektos (Chosen - Selected) You’re not random, you’re chosen.
Foreknowledge - He knew EVERYTHING about you and still chose you.
Obedience to Jesus - Being chosen means we are obedient to God. Not perfection… obedience. Jesus is savior AND LORD.
2 Corinthians 10:5 - We take those wrong thoughts (labels) captive and make it obedient to Christ
1 Peter 1:3-5 -
New Birth - You’re a new creation. We call ourselves old names… but we’re a new creation and we should walk in a way that’s different.
Inheritance - It doesn’t fade, go away, or dissappear… and that should make you walk confidently. Humbly… but confidently. It’s all because of God
1 Corinthians 1 - Paul calls one of the worst churches in the new testament sanctified. That they were set apart and different.
1 Peter 1:7 - (CONTEXT) They were suffering but still chosen. So even if your suffering… you’re still chosen. Circumstances don’t cancel your calling.
1 Peter 1:8 - Joy is part of being Chosen
Expresses that regardless of the situation we have joy
We don’t need to see God, we don’t have to feel good, but we have Joy in all things
The mark of someone who knows they are chosen is inexpressible glorious joy. Everyone should think you’re weird because you have Joy when you shouldn’t, because you’re chosen.

You: So what does this all mean for you today?

Stop calling yourself by old names - Start walking like someone who’s chosen. NOT PERFECT… but Obedient.
Walk like your future is secure and an inheritance is waiting.
When life is hard don’t ask “Am I still chosen?”… ask “How do I live chosen right here?”

We: Imagine if we lived like we were chosen...

We’d live differently Pray differently Suffer differently And we’d even celebrate regularly
