Jesus Asks

This is the final days before Jesus dies on the cross
the Sadducees just completed asking Jesus questions
trying to trap Him into a situation to be able to bring Him to the Roman government to be executed
or to bring Him out of favor with the people who are still hanging onto every word He says
V 39-40
everyone has exhausted their ability to trap Jesus with questions
now Jesus has His own question for them and the people
Jesus wants the people to know that the Messiah is man and God
the people are taught that the Messiah is a man
in fact even today in Jewish literature
Quote from Judaism 101 on Identity of the Messiah (this view is apparently generally held by modern orthodox Jews) - The mashiach will be a great political leader descended from King David (Jeremiah 23:5). The mashiach is often referred to as "mashiach ben David" (mashiach, son of David). He will be well-versed in Jewish law, and observant of its commandments (Isaiah 11:2-5). He will be a charismatic leader, inspiring others to follow his example. He will be a great military leader, who will win battles for Israel. He will be a great judge, who makes righteous decisions (Jeremiah 33:15But above all, he will be a human being, not a god, demi-god or other supernatural being. It has been said that in every generation, a person is born with the potential to be the mashiach. If the time is right for the messianic age within that person's lifetime, then that person will be the mashiach. But if that person dies before he completes the mission of the mashiach, then that person is not the mashiach....
so the question that Jesus is going to ask will shatter that thought
V 41-44
in this culture the father is always patriarch the sons are never considered over them
the father would never call his son lord
but here David is calling the Messiah God
this is something that they have never thought of before

Son Of David

the people always knew that the Messiah will be the son of David
we have the genealogy of Jesus in Luke and Matthew
Mary in Luke
Joseph in Matthew
it was important for the Holy Spirit to have these written down because all of the genealogies were destroyed in the temple in ad 70
People have been calling Jesus the Son of David for a while now
they assume that Jesus is someone like Elijah who comes from God and does miracles
they still don’t see Him as God
but Jesus is going to try to teach them this because unless you know Jesus as God you cant be saved
the world, the ones who acknowledge Jesus see Him as a
Good teacher, a prophet, a good example, or a swear word
but they do not see Him as God, Deity

The Trinity

there are many so called christians who deny the trinity
they have what is called modalism
God changes into the Father Son or Holy Spirit to do whatever is needed
but we believe in the trinity
God is one God
in 3 equal persons
the first part of the Athanasian creed says
 That we worship one God in trinity and the trinity in unity,
neither blending their persons
nor dividing their essence.
For the person of the Father is a distinct person,
the person of the Son is another,
and that of the Holy Spirit still another.
But the divinity of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is one,
their glory equal, their majesty coeternal.
What quality the Father has, the Son has, and the Holy Spirit has.
The Father is uncreated,
the Son is uncreated,
the Holy Spirit is uncreated.
The Father is immeasurable,
the Son is immeasurable,
the Holy Spirit is immeasurable.
The Father is eternal,
the Son is eternal,
the Holy Spirit is eternal.
And yet there are not three eternal beings;
there is but one eternal being.
So too there are not three uncreated or immeasurable beings;
there is but one uncreated and immeasurable being.
Similarly, the Father is almighty,
the Son is almighty,
the Holy Spirit is almighty.
Yet there are not three almighty beings;
there is but one almighty being.
Thus the Father is God,
the Son is God,
the Holy Spirit is God.
Yet there are not three gods;
there is but one God.
Thus the Father is Lord,
the Son is Lord,
the Holy Spirit is Lord.
Yet there are not three lords;
there is but one Lord.
Just as Christian truth compels us
to confess each person individually
as both God and Lord,
so catholic religion forbids us
to say that there are three gods or lords.
The Father was neither made nor created nor begotten from anyone.
The Son was neither made nor created;
he was begotten from the Father alone.
The Holy Spirit was neither made nor created nor begotten;
he proceeds from the Father and the Son.
Accordingly there is one Father, not three fathers;
there is one Son, not three sons;
there is one Holy Spirit, not three holy spirits.
Nothing in this trinity is before or after,
nothing is greater or smaller;
in their entirety the three persons
are coeternal and coequal with each other.
So in everything, as was said earlier,
we must worship their trinity in their unity
and their unity in their trinity.
we see the 3 at the Baptism of Jesus
the Son Jesus
the Fathers voice from heaven
the Holy Spirit as the descending Dove
lets go to the Psalm that Jesus is speaking of
Psalm 110:1 LSB
Yahweh says to my Lord: “Sit at My right hand Until I put Your enemies as a footstool for Your feet.”
this psalm was given to David by the Holy Spirit as a prophecy
a prophecy concerning the Father giving the Son the kingdoms of this world
a prophecy of the Son of David / the Messiah
who is speaking in this Psalm
V 1
the Father is speaking to the Son
who is sitting at the right hand of the Almighty
a place of honor
V 1
this is the verse that Jesus uses in His question
How can David call his offspring Lord?
How can David call his son God?
this is the

Incarnation

Again I quote from the Athanasian Creed
 That we believe and confess
that our Lord Jesus Christ, God's Son,
is both God and human, equally.
He is God from the essence of the Father,
begotten before time;
and he is human from the essence of his mother,
born in time;
completely God, completely human,
with a rational soul and human flesh;
equal to the Father as regards divinity,
less than the Father as regards humanity.
Although he is God and human,
yet Christ is not two, but one.
He is one, however,
not by his divinity being turned into flesh,
but by God's taking humanity to himself.
He is one,
certainly not by the blending of his essence,
but by the unity of his person.
For just as one human is both rational soul and flesh,
so too the one Christ is both God and human.
He suffered for our salvation;
he descended to Sheol;
he arose from the dead;
he ascended to heaven;
he is seated at the Father's right hand;
from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
this is what Jesus is trying to teach to the people
I Jesus is yes human
But I am also the second person of the trinity
like I read earlier this is something that the Jews even today refuse to believe
they believe that the Christ are 2 different people
Jesus wanted the people to believe the truth about Himself
He also wants us to know the truth
He wants us to be able to tell others the truth
so pass on these truths to someone this week
