Mark 2:1-12 - Our Greatest Need

共通の必要を表す物語
スペインのマドリードで起こった父と息子の物語があります。二人の関係は悪くなり、息子は家を出て行きました。何ヶ月も探した後、絶望した父親はマドリードの新聞に広告を出しました。「親愛なるパブロへ、土曜日の正午に新聞社の前で会おう。すべてを赦す。愛している。父より」
その土曜日、パブロという名前の800人の男性が現れました。若い人も年配の人も、皆父親からの赦しと愛を求めていたのです。この物語は、私たちが皆持っている赦しの必要、特に天の父からの赦しの必要を表しています。
赦しはイエス様が行われる最も偉大な奇跡と言われています。それは最大の必要を満たし、最大の代価を払い、最大の祝福と最も永続する結果をもたらします。ダビデ王はこのことを理解して詩篇86篇5節でこう書きました。「主よ、あなたは恵み深く、赦しを与える方。あなたに呼び求める全ての者に豊かな愛を示される」

奇跡よりも御言葉
群衆は奇跡を期待して集まりましたが、2節は「御言葉を語られた」と記しています。原文では福音、つまり救いの良い知らせを宣べ伝えることを意味します。人々はしるしや癒しを期待していたでしょうが、イエス様は彼らが最も必要としているのは神の御言葉だと知っておられました。なぜなら人生を変えるのは神の御言葉だからです。
荒野のイスラエルの民を思い出してください。彼らは素晴らしい奇跡を目撃しました。紅海が分かれ、夜は火の柱、昼は雲の柱、天からのマナ、岩からの水。しかし、これらの奇跡は彼らの心を変えませんでした。神が約束の地に導かれた時、彼らは信じないで入ることを拒みました。ローマ人への手紙10章17節は私たちに思い出させます。「信仰は聞くことから始まり、聞くことは神の御言葉によるのです」
四人の友人とその信仰
四人の男性が中風の友人をイエス様のもとに連れて来ました。この人は完全に他の人に依存して生きていました。当時は病院も理学療法も医学的な発見も専門医もありませんでした。この人の人生は床に横たわることに限られていました。
群衆のためにイエス様に近づけなかった時、この決意の固い友人たちは屋根に上り、屋根を開けました。場面を想像してください。イエス様が聖書の学びをしていると、突然上から音がして、ほこりが落ち、光が差し込み、彼らが友人をロープで降ろしてきたのです。

宗教指導者たちの反応
イエス様の赦しの宣言を喜ばない人々がいました。律法学者たちは心の中で考えていました。「なぜこの人はこのような冒涜を語るのか？神お一人のほかに、だれが罪を赦すことができるだろうか？」
二番目の質問については彼らは正しかったのです。神だけが罪を赦すことができます。私たちが罪を犯すと他の人に影響を与えますが、最終的に私たちの罪は律法を作られた神に対するものです。ダビデがバテシェバとの罪の後で言ったように、「私はあなたに、ただあなたに罪を犯した」（詩篇51篇4節）のです。
神の権威の証明

罪を赦す権威を証明するために、イエス様はその人を癒されました。これは、イエス様が体を癒すだけでなく、罪を赦す力を持っておられることの目に見える証拠でした。イエス様が宣言されたように、「わたしと父とは一つです」。イエス様はただの奇跡を行う方や教師ではありませんでした。肉体をとって来られた神ご自身だったのです。
歩く証し
すぐにその人は起き上がり、床を取り上げて、皆の前を歩いて出て行きました。皆が驚き、神をあがめて「こんなことは見たことがない」と言いました。この癒しは神の力の証明であり、神が人の人生に何をなさることができるかの証しでした。
興味深いことに注目してください。彼らが到着した時、場所は非常に混雑していてドアから入ることができませんでした。しかし癒しの後、群衆は道を開け、その人は歩いて出て行きました。イエス様が彼にできたことを、私たちにもしてくださることができるのです。
この物語の中で私たちはどこに当てはまるか

私たちが聞きたい最も偉大な言葉
この人生で最も聞きたい言葉は、イエス様が「あなたの罪は赦された」と言ってくださることです。なぜならそれが私たちの最大の必要だからです。使徒ヨハネが第一の手紙で書いているように、「もし私たちが自分の罪を言い表すなら、神は真実で正しい方ですから、その罪を赦し、すべての悪から私たちをきよめてくださいます」
詩篇103篇8節と12節は美しく神の心を表現しています。「主は あわれみ深く、情け深い。怒るのにおそく、恵み豊かである...東が西から遠く離れているように、私たちのそむきの罪を私たちから遠く離される」
この素晴らしい物語は、神が癒すだけでなく赦す力と権威を持っておられることを現しています。私たちの最大の必要に神の最大の賜物で答えてくださるのです。
What is your greatest need? Young people might say it's a good education or career. Others might think it's marriage, family, or owning a home. Those preparing for retirement might say it's good health and financial security. But there's actually one great need that all of us share in common.
A Story of Universal Need
There's a story from Madrid, Spain, about a father and son who had a falling out. Their relationship became so strained that the son ran away from home. After months of searching, the desperate father placed an ad in the Madrid newspaper: "Dear Pablo, meet me in front of the newspaper office at noon on Saturday. All is forgiven. I love you, your father."
On that Saturday, 800 men named Pablo showed up—young and old—all looking for forgiveness and love from their fathers. This story illustrates our universal need for forgiveness, especially from our heavenly Father.
Forgiveness has been called the greatest miracle Jesus ever performs. It meets the greatest need, costs the greatest price, and brings the greatest blessing with the most lasting results. King David understood this when he wrote in Psalm 86:5, "For you, Lord, are good and ready to forgive and abundant in mercy to all those who call upon you."
Jesus Returns to Capernaum
In Mark chapter 2, we find Jesus entering Capernaum again—the fishing village that served as headquarters for His ministry. This was where He called the fishermen Andrew, Peter, and John, along with Matthew the tax collector. Word traveled fast that Jesus had returned, and the house where He stayed became packed with people.
Consider this question: if Jesus knocked on our door unexpectedly, would He be comfortable coming in? Would He be welcome with what we watch, listen to, or discuss in our homes? Jesus doesn't want to remain on the outside of our lives—He wants to be comfortable everywhere in our hearts and homes.
The Word Above Miracles
The crowd had gathered expecting miracles, but verse 2 tells us that Jesus "preached the word to them." The original word means to preach the gospel—the good news of salvation. While the people likely expected signs and healings, Jesus knew what they needed most was the Word of God, because it's God's Word that changes lives.
Remember the Israelites in the wilderness? They witnessed incredible miracles—the Red Sea parting, fire by night, cloud by day, manna from heaven, water from rock. Yet none of these miracles changed their hearts. When God led them to the Promised Land, they refused to enter because they didn't believe. Romans 10:17 reminds us: "Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God."
Four Friends and Their Faith
Four men brought their paralyzed friend to Jesus, carrying someone who was completely dependent on others for survival. In that era, there were no hospitals, physical therapy, medical breakthroughs, or specialists. This man's life was limited to lying on a bed.
When they couldn't reach Jesus through the crowd, these determined friends climbed to the roof and opened it up. Picture the scene—Jesus giving a Bible study when suddenly there's banging overhead, dust falling, and light streaming through as they lowered their friend down with ropes.
Verse 5 says, "When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, 'Son, your sins are forgiven you.'" Notice that Jesus saw the faith of the four men but spoke forgiveness to the paralyzed man. Faith should be visible through our actions, as Jesus taught in Matthew 5:16: "Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven."
The Greater Need Revealed
Imagine what those four friends felt. They had carried their friend a great distance, up stairs to the roof, broken through the ceiling, and lowered him down with ropes. They were sweaty, dusty, muscles aching—and Jesus says, "Your sins are forgiven." They might have thought, "We brought him to be healed!"
But Jesus knew something they didn't yet understand: this man's greatest need was forgiveness—the same need we all share. Romans 3:10 and 23 tell us, "There is none righteous, no, not one... for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."
The Religious Leaders' Response
Not everyone was happy with Jesus' declaration of forgiveness. The scribes were reasoning in their hearts: "Why does this man speak blasphemies like this? Who can forgive sins but God alone?"
They were right about the second question—only God can forgive sins. When we sin, it affects others, but ultimately our sin is against God, who made the law. As King David said after his sin with Bathsheba, "Against you, and you only, have I sinned" (Psalm 51:4).
Demonstrating Divine Authority
Jesus knew their thoughts and asked, "Which is easier to say to the paralytic, 'Your sins are forgiven you,' or to say, 'Arise, take up your bed and walk'?" It might seem easier to say "your sins are forgiven" because no one can verify it, but in reality, it wasn't easy for Jesus—it cost Him His life on the cross.
To demonstrate His authority to forgive sins, Jesus healed the man. This was visual proof that Jesus had power not only to heal bodies but to forgive sin. As Jesus declared, "I and my Father are one." He wasn't just a miracle worker or teacher—He was God in living flesh.
A Walking Testimony
Immediately the man arose, took up his bed, and walked out before everyone. They were all amazed and glorified God, saying, "We have never seen anything like this!" This healing was a demonstration of God's power and a testimony of what God can do in someone's life.
Notice something interesting: when they arrived, the place was so crowded they couldn't enter the door. But after the healing, the crowd parted and the man walked out. What Jesus could do for him, He can do for us.
Where Do We Fit in This Story?
Consider what part you might play in this account. Perhaps like the paralyzed man, you're struggling today, paralyzed by sin, knowing your greatest need is to come to Jesus for forgiveness. When you're flat on your back, there's only one place to look—up.
Maybe you identify with the religious leaders, feeling skeptical or hard-hearted toward the things of God, struggling with doubt and disbelief.
Or perhaps you're like the four friends, believing and praying for others' miracles for years, sharing Jesus with people who haven't yet responded. Like these faithful men, hold on and don't let go of the rope. When Jesus sees your faith and actions, He hears your prayers and will work.
The Greatest Words We Can Hear
What we most want to hear in this life is Jesus saying, "Your sins are forgiven," because that is our greatest need. As the apostle John writes in his first epistle: "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness."
Psalm 103:8 and 12 beautifully express God's heart: "The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in mercy... As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us."
This incredible story reveals God's power and authority not only to heal but to forgive—addressing our greatest need with His greatest gift.
