THE SECOND EPISTLE OF

JOHN

2nd John ___ Sermon 6/8/25 Evening Sunday Youth Service
Jesus cares for His church. To preserve it we must walk the right way, practice the right way and protect the right way.

Walk the right way [V.4]

Introduction of the way
sharing Jesus
2 Tim 1:5 - faith was shared in Timothy’s family
2 Timothy 1:5 KJV 1900
5 When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.
Romans 10:14 - how shall they hear
Romans 10:14 KJV 1900
14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?
1 Corinthians - some plant
Romans 5:6-10 - For when we were without strength
Romans 5:6–10 KJV 1900
6 For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. 8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. 10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.
Growth in way
spiritual maturity
Joshua 4:6-8 - live a life of testimony that other followers may see.
Joshua 4:6–8 KJV 1900
6 That this may be a sign among you, that when your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean ye by these stones? 7 Then ye shall answer them, That the waters of Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord; when it passed over Jordan, the waters of Jordan were cut off: and these stones shall be for a memorial unto the children of Israel for ever. 8 And the children of Israel did so as Joshua commanded, and took up twelve stones out of the midst of Jordan, as the Lord spake unto Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel, and carried them over with them unto the place where they lodged, and laid them down there.
Romans 5:1–5 KJV 1900
1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: 2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; 4 And patience, experience; and experience, hope: 5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.
Testimony of the way
the effect of walking
They will show and tell themselves “I found of they children”

Practice the right way [V.5-6]

Practice is application of something previously learned.
Origin of our practice
Where do we get what we practice
Romans 15:4 - Gall things written that for our learning
Romans 15:4 KJV 1900
4 For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.
2 Timothy 3:16 - All scripture given by inspiration
2 Timothy 3:16 KJV 1900
16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
The way that we practice
What is it that we practice
John 15:12-14 - Love for one another
John 15:12–14 KJV 1900
12 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. 13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. 14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.
Phil 3:16-17 - follow the example of one anothe
Philippians 3:16–17 KJV 1900
16 Nevertheless, whereto we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us mind the same thing. 17 Brethren, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample.
Why do we practice
Phil 3:20-21 - our conversation is in heaven.
Philippians 3:20–21 KJV 1900
20 For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: 21 Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.
John 13:34-35 - by this all men
John 13:34–35 KJV 1900
34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. 35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
Matthew 5:14-16 - Let other see your light that they may see Jeuss.
Matthew 5:14–16 KJV 1900
14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. 15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Protect the the right way [V7-11]

The way of deceit
origin
Deniers of Jesus being the Christ… A liar
Against God… Satan, the liar John 8:42-45 - denyer of truth… A specific truth about Jesus - not different secondary doctrines
John 8:42–45 KJV 1900
42 Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me. 43 Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word. 44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. 45 And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.
practice
Speaks lies and decieves (John 8:44-45)
Does not confess Jesus came 1 John 4:3; 2:18 - is in the world; a signal of the last time
1 John 4:3 KJV 1900
3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
The protection against deceit
Mark the deceitful - Romans 16:17-18 - mark those that cause deceit
Romans 16:17–18 KJV 1900
17 Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. 18 For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.
By Protecting, we may have a full reward (2 John 10)
Abide in the doctrine of Christ. = talks about consistancy… We are not sinless be we should sin less.
Deny false ways
Phil 1:18 - Christ is still preach… howbeit false doctrine, the doctrine of Christ is maintained.
Philippians 1:18 KJV 1900
18 What then? notwithstanding, every way, whether in pretence, or in truth, Christ is preached; and I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice.
Take into house
Proverbs 19:27 KJV 1900
27 Cease, my son, to hear the instruction That causeth to err from the words of knowledge.
To invite into the house in that time was to affirm their heretical ministry and teaching…
It’s more of a cultural idea. What in our culture would affirm their teaching and authority as teacher.
Receive him not into your house. This cannot mean that no acts of kindness, in any circumstances, were to be shown to such persons; but that there was to be nothing done which could be fairly construed as encouraging or countenancing them as religious teachers. The true rule would seem to be, in regard to such persons, that, so far as we have [interactions] with them as neighbours, or strangers, we are to be honest, true, kind, and just, but we are to do nothing that will authenticate them as religious teachers.  Albert Barnes, Notes on the New Testament: James to Jude, ed. Robert Frew (London: Blackie & Son, 1884–1885), 365.
