A New Moses; a Better Prophet
A New Moses; a Better Prophet
Gospels LITTERED w. vocab & allusions to Exodus/Moses
Authors hi'lighted sit. & words that correspond to Mo’s ministry.
Note: doesn’t mean JC didn’t do those things! (Wrong concl'n)
does mean disc. found J’s actions to be mosesy & they emph.
Each gosp. auth has little diff. emph. on Jesus’ Mosesness…
; [Mark] Jesus, A Powerful Teacher/Prophet
Mark 1:22 “The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law.”
Divine proph’c auth! Power!
Mo' known for his powerful teaching & words from God.
[Matthew] Jesus, A New Lawgiver
Jesus doesn’t do away with the law, but He purifies & distills it into its ideal form.
Moses spent 40 days before receiving law; Jesus’ prep’on be4 ministry >>
Matthew 4:1–2 “Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.”
40 usually a # of testing or prep. Here, could be comp. to Mo; immed. precedes teaching min. to the ppl!
Also— Serm. on Mt./tch’gs becomes new Law. (Mt. org clearest)
[Luke] Jesus, Our Redeemer
Lstwk: “Redeem” keyw’d— Luk. [ONLY!] open/close acct. w/ ref’ce!
Jesus in hometwn Synagogue; Isa. scroll — X’s purpose >>
Luke 4:18–19 ““The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.””
X draws comp. btwn 'self & suff. serv. in Isa = YH in flesh…
ALL about saving people who are held pris’nr!
[John] Jesus, God’s Divine Presence…
John 1:16–17 “Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.”
Dir. comparison to Moses here—up a notch—deeper, more!
7 I AM statements… triggers back to burn’ bush!
Acts of Apostles (early church)
Context: setup Stephen’s speech… Acts 7.
Summarizes Isr. relat’p to maj. prophets & 4fathers. Ult. says:
Acts 7:51–52 ““You stiff-necked people! Your hearts and ears are still uncircumcised. You are just like your ancestors: You always resist the Holy Spirit! Was there ever a prophet your ancestors did not persecute? They even killed those who predicted the coming of the Righteous One. And now you have betrayed and murdered him!”
Could do a sermon ser. on EACH these items, but not time!
tBP?
All the gospels climax in an harrowing/amaz’g description of Jesus’ greatest act
Each describe JC using Ex. term’gy to speak about this act of grace >>
Jesus’ Exodus Way
Jesus’ Exodus Way
Any1 remember three parts to Ex Way theme?
Way OUT; Way THROUGH; Way INTO.
Jesus’ climactic moments hi’light same Exod. lang & ideas…
X shows off glory on Mt. >
Luke 9:28–31 “[Jesus] took Peter, John and James with him… onto a mountain to pray. As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. They spoke about his departure, which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem.”
Word “departure” = εξοδος.
X speaking w Mo’ about his Exodus! in Jerus.
Don’t know wha’ts coming, pretty excited!
Do know what’s coming, amazing connx!
We can see all 3 parts of theme displayed in X’s victory. FIRST >>
the Cross: The Way Out
the Cross: The Way Out
Jesus’ death is our liberation from sin-slavery.
Like Moses (by G’s pwr) lead the ppl out of captivity, so X marches us out of sin by pwr of His OWN hand.
Truth:
When you give in to that old mode of thinking & choose to walk in sin, you are at its mercy.
Same jokes, lang., old lifestyle, same movies, glorify’g same perverse stuff…
X came to set you FREE! If Xian, U are free… need 2 live like it.
AP expertly cmds Xians Corinth this same framework - with Ex lang
Dealing with pers. who enga’g in sex outside of monog. hetero. cov (“sexual immorality” πορνεια); worse, starting to infect whole Church! …Says >>
1 Corinthians 5:7 “Get rid of the old yeast, so that you may be a new unleavened batch—as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.”
X, our...lamb. whose blood protects us from judg’t!
Jesus is our WAY OUT from under curse of death.
And Christ calls us to live new!
“The death of Christ makes [us] new; yet [we] must get rid of the old in order to be new, precisely because in Christ [we] are already new!”
- Gordon Fee
We escape death’s fx if we are covered by the blood!
But we are also called to ‘live up to’ our true nature now.
Bc we’re redeemed, we’re called to speak & act & live like we R.
Sure, you’re saved & on fire… do others recog.?
Discipleship is imperative in helping us strip off old ways & living brand new!
Just walking with some1 in a mess so you both get cleaned up
Men’s & Women’s, RR, GM, myCRA, etc…
In the og Exodus, blood of animal covr’d the ppl; led 2 their rescue.
In Gosp's, Jesus is "Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29).
via death on crss, led out of slavery (not to Pharaoh) to sin & death itself.
The Cross wasn’t end of the journey!
Just like Isr. had to pass thru the sea to move on, so JC didn’t stay in the grave!
There’s a ‘Way Through’ the darkest valley — and He walked it for us. >>
the Resurrection: The Way Through
the Resurrection: The Way Through
Again, Isr. was saved out of slavery in Egy. but still fnd ‘selves trapped by death-waters (Reed Sea).
We are constantly bombarded by enemies’ lures & counters.
Stuck in deterio’g body; past trauma haunts; old habits die hard; new things steal attn.
Feels like death/sin has uppr hand!
Jesus’ resurrection was the new-creation Way through.
Romans 6:4 ESV We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
Echoes Red Sea crossing: new life on the other side of death.
Paul connects this dir. to baptism! Outward sign of regen!
Resur'n is not just victory; it’s the opening of a new path.
When we feel like quitting, remember: Jesus didn’t.
In fact, he went thru waters of death to ensure U can make it thru
What Jesus did, firstfruits, we can now walk out e’rday!
Stuggl’g? Stres’d? Burd’nd? Fail’g? Overwh’d?
ASK FOR NEW LIFE. PRAY FOR HIS SUPP’T & HIS LIFE!
Isaiah 40:30–31 “Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”
JC rose from the dead — not just to prove a point, but to blaze a trail.
Res. = new Red Sea crossing: road where death is defeated, new life begins.
He walked through what we could never survive on our own.”
& just like Israel wasn’t meant to wander forever, Jesus’ resurrection wasn’t the final step.
Makes His pwr personal!
X ascended & sent us a new kind of life — one marked by freedom, presence, and purpose. >>
the Pentecost: The Way Into [the Promise]
the Pentecost: The Way Into [the Promise]
Pentecost Sunday is next week // ~50 days after Easter
Shavuot/Pentecost b’came associated with the giving of the Law & YH est. covenants w/ His ppl.
Mod’n Jews study Torah all night on Shavuot to show devot’n to law & God; remember His promises.
Christians celebrate Pentecost (gk name) as the day when >>
Jesus ascended, then sent His Spirit.
You could say that:
At Pentecost, we celebrate the giving of the Law of Christ on our hearts. See: John 14–17
Not just a spir. promise; ethereal feeling; PERSONAL
G’s close pwrfl pres’ce dwells in us who believe!
Listen to what the Spirit is saying.…
Jn 14-17 is Jesus’ final long talk/pryr with Disc. b4 cross.
Says amazing thing:
John 17:17–18 “Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world.”
God’s WORD contains pictures of what is REAL. That truth sends us out to be examples to others; prophets.
Christ’s good will for us is to be on-mission, empowered by the purifying work of the Spirit.
HS corrects poor action, leads in godly action, & guides us as to which is which!
Pentecost was a new Sinai moment.
God doesn’t just give stone tablets with his cmds: writes them on our hearts.
Now we can know right from wrong. Good/evil. Healthy/hurtful.
AND - he empowers us to walk in it!
If you want the blessings of God, you need to seek His Spirit.
The Spirit leads us into the Promised Life now — the Kingdom of God.
All we have to do is >>
Trust Christ’s Sacrifice & Victory!
Trust Christ’s Sacrifice & Victory!
Satan has no Power in a Christian’s Life
Satan has no Power in a Christian’s Life
Luke 10:17–18 “The seventy-two [followers] returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.” He replied, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.”
While devil can still influence & woo us,
The ONLY power the satan has is the power we give him by letting him succeed.
Sure, that applies to anyone who doesn’t heed Spirit’s call
Truth: the Xian has auth. in X to overcome serpent & push BACK the dark'ss.
Luke 10:19 [Jesus said to his followers:] “I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.”
X wasn’t just speaking in hyperbole; 72 exper. it, disc. in Acts exper. it; believers thru’t time take hold of X’s pwr in their lives
Diseases expelled, temptation conquered, relationships restored = the devil beaten back in defeat!
Like Mo’ raised staff & displ’d G’s pwr, JC crushed pwr of whatever’s holding you captive.
He already did! The satan has no auth. here.
Stop believing his lies & fall’g prey to things that keep U captive.
Jesus will Set you Free & Keep you Secure
Jesus will Set you Free & Keep you Secure
Please hear me: NOT just saying “close eyes & believe it all away”
NOT a wish-upon-a-star. 1) This is real, not just imagined, so believ'g that is frst step. 2) This also takes work, steps to heal, process (counsel, pryr, fsting, lifesty chng, gener’ty, etc.)
In Lk10, Jesus gave a caution & a command (for us to focus):
Luke 10:20 “However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.””
Again, reminder that it’s not about us! About the pwr in us & WHOSE it is.
Believing that Jesus already did and He CAN is the first step.
Sometimes we believe in a weak Jesus who just wants to make us feel good occasionally.
Not devoted to His kind of life; His comm.; His inheritance.
Trust in Father, Son, & Spirit to set you free!
Promise this: Jesus wants you set free.
Altar time?
