Bible Passage: Colossians 1:16
Bible Passage: Colossians 1:16
Summary: Colossians 1:16 emphasizes the supremacy of Christ in creation, stating that all things were created by Him and for Him, underscoring His authority and role as not only the Creator but also the Sustainer of the universe.
Application: Understanding Christ's role as the Creator can embolden our faith in His authority over our lives and the world around us. When we face struggles or uncertainties, we can remember that the one who created all things also sustains them, and we are held securely in His hands.
Teaching: This sermon could teach the congregation about the significance of Christ's preeminence in all things and inspire them to see His hand in every aspect of their lives, from the mundane to the miraculous. It invites a deeper appreciation of His sovereignty.
How this passage could point to Christ: In the context of the Bible as a whole, Colossians 1:16 places Christ at the center of God’s creative work, linking back to Genesis where creation comes into being by God's word. Through the lens of New Testament theology, it reveals that Christ's work is integral not only to creation but also to redemption, framing Him as the ultimate purpose of all existence.

Intro
Christ is not only the Creator but also the Sustainer of all things; through Him, we find our purpose and strength.
In the beginning God:
Knowing your purpose brings clarity, direction, and depth to your life. When you understand why you were created and what you're meant to do, life is no longer random or routine—it becomes intentional. Purpose gives you a reason to wake up each morning with motivation and peace, even in the face of challenges.
Instead of chasing success or approval, you begin to live with significance, focusing on what truly matters. You make wiser choices, invest your time more thoughtfully, and find fulfillment not in what you have, but in who you are becoming. Relationships deepen, values align, and even pain gains perspective when seen through the lens of purpose.
As a counselor, I regularly encounter individuals who struggle with depression and anxiety—many of whom feel trapped by a sense of disappointment and disillusionment with their lives. The root of their struggles often lies in the expectations they’ve placed on themselves or the comparison they make to others. They look at people around them—friends, colleagues, celebrities—and feel they don’t measure up. The result is a cycle of self-doubt, feelings of failure, and a deep dissatisfaction with their lifestyle.
One of the most common questions I hear from these individuals is, “What is my purpose?” or “Why was I created?” This quest for purpose is often accompanied by a search for fulfillment—whether through success, relationships, or possessions. Many believe that if they achieve certain things or “get it all together,” they’ll finally find peace and meaning.
However, what I’ve found in my work is that this search for purpose is often misguided. Many people look for fulfillment in places that ultimately leave them feeling empty. Without a deeper understanding of their identity and their connection to the Creator, their lives can feel hollow and directionless. It’s as if they’re constantly chasing something, but it remains just out of reach.
The Empty Pursuit of Life Without God
What many individuals fail to realize is that a life disconnected from God is a life without true meaning. We were created for something far greater than temporary achievements or external validation. Without God, we are left to navigate life on our own, constantly measuring ourselves against others, never quite feeling “good enough” or truly fulfilled.
The idea of “purpose” is not something we can simply manufacture on our own. It’s not about following the crowd or living up to societal expectations. True purpose—meaning that lasts and fulfills us at the core—comes from understanding why we were created and recognizing the Creator behind our existence.
The Fulfillment That Comes from Knowing God’s Purpose for You
When we open ourselves to the truth that life is designed by God, everything changes. God created us with purpose, and that purpose is rooted in our relationship with Him. In the Bible, we’re reminded that our lives are not random; we are “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14), each with unique gifts and a calling to fulfill. God’s purpose for our lives is far beyond what we can achieve on our own—it’s about living in harmony with His plan.
When we acknowledge God as the source of our purpose, we find peace that no career success, social media like, or material possession can provide. Instead of being trapped by comparisons or societal standards, we can look to God for our worth and direction. Purpose becomes less about what we accomplish and more about who we are becoming—reflecting the character of Christ and living out His calling in our lives.
A Life of Meaning, Centered on God
For those struggling with feelings of inadequacy or disappointment, understanding your purpose begins with understanding who you are in God’s eyes. God is the one who created you, loves you, and calls you to a life of meaning that goes far beyond anything this world can offer. When you live according to His design, your life will be filled with purpose, peace, and fulfillment.
If you find yourself feeling lost or uncertain about your purpose, remember this: You were created with intentionality, and your life has a purpose that is rooted in God’s will. Turn to Him for clarity, peace, and the fulfillment that only He can provide.
Ultimately, knowing your purpose connects you to something greater than yourself—it anchors your life in meaning that lasts.
