The Joshua Generation - Obedience
The Joshua Generation - Obedience
If you have been around any Church for sometime you most likely would have heard the phrase “The Joshua Generation”, this termonolgy in most cases is used to described our youth and young people. Normally it is followed by a prophecy or a prophetic declaration that the youths or the Joshua generation, will bring forth revival. That this generation will bring forth another move of God, like we have not seen before. And truthfully, I fully believe that this generation coming will be leaders and take part in that movement. For today’s service, However, I want to put that term, the Joshua Generation into some context. What exactly does that term mean and how best can we live up to such a powerful a tittle. And the only way for us to do that is for us to take a look at Joshua and the nation of Israel ourselves.
Main Scripture: Joshua 1:7–9
““Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.””
Reasoning:
How did we get hear? How did we get to God given Joshua these instructions? If we start from verse One, we are now introduced to Joshua installation service as God’s appointed leader over the people of Israel. We see God informing Joshua that Moses his servant is dead, and that he will be the leader, and he will be the one leading His people into the promised that he promised their ancestors so many years ago.
Moses Accomplishments:
This was no easy task for Joshua. Moses is now DEAD! This is THE MOSES. This wasn’t just your uncle Moses, or your neighbor who live down the road. No this was the Moses, who threw down his rod in front of Pharoah and it turn into a snake and devour all of Pharoah’s sorcerer, this is the Moses who with his staff and under the anointing of God stretch out his hands and the water divided and the entire nation of Israel walked on dry ground. This is the Moses who went up on the mountain and spent hours in the very presence, where his face was glowing from being in that very presence. Moses wasn’t just an ordinary leader, he was God chosen one.
What is Joshua to do? How can he possibly fill the role of leader after Moses? No longer is he being asked to be a spy, to check out the land before an invasion, or a warrior in the army to fight against the enemies of the Israelites, no longer is he being asked to be Moses’ aid or protocol officer. But we see here in Joshua 1, that God is installing Joshua to be the leader, so that he can lead God’s people in to the promise land.
We see in Joshua 1:7-9 God is giving Joshua the charge. God is giving Joshua the master plan on to be successful. God told Joshua to do 3 things:
Obey all of the law my servant Moses gave you
Keep the book of the law always on your lips
Meditate on it day and night.
God told him after he does these things, then he will be prosperous and successful.
