Redefining Community: The Call to Authentic Church Life

The Heartbeat of the Church: Community, Care and Jesus

Bible Passage: Acts 2:42–47

Summary: In Acts 2:42–47, the early church exemplifies a countercultural community marked by unwavering devotion, mutual support, and joyful worship, standing in stark contrast to the self-centeredness often found in society. Their practices of teaching, fellowship, and sharing led to a dynamic culture that reflected the love of Christ, making them a beacon of hope and purpose in a chaotic world.
Application: This sermon highlights the transformative power of genuine community within the church, calling believers to engage actively in communal life as a means to overcome isolation and meaninglessness. By participating in shared activities such as prayer, teaching, and fellowship, individuals find fulfillment and encouragement while collectively bearing witness to the love of Christ.
Teaching: The sermon conveys that authentic Christian community is not merely a social or cultural phenomenon but a pivotal expression of faith that reflects Christ’s nature. It emphasizes that by living out the values of the early church in relationships and service, believers can materially impact their communities, illustrating the gospel's relevance today.
How this passage could point to Christ: This passage showcases Christ as the architect of community through His sacrificial love, which empowers believers to form deep, trusting relationships. The shared life in Acts prefigures the body of Christ, where each member is essential and contributes to the whole, embodying the heart of God’s redemptive plan for humanity.

Opening
The past few weeks Pastor Charlie has been preaching a series from Ecclesiastes; A meaningful life in a meaningless world
This series has been great for me and I’ve had lots of moments of reflections and have dealt with a fair amount of conviction
What is the meaning of life?
What is my purpose?
Am I doing what I’m suppose to be doing?
Am I chasing something that has no value?
Solomon said some phrases like this
Everything is meaningless, what do people gain from all their labors at which they toil under the sun
Generations come and generations go but the earth remains forever
I have seen all the things that are done under the sun, all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind
For with much wisdom come sorrow, the more knowledge the more grief
I denied myself nothing my eyes desired
I refused my heart no pleasure
There is a time for everything and a season for every activity under the heavens
A time to be born and a time to die
A time to plant and a time to uproot
A time to mourn and a time to dance
These are just some of the things we have heard so far from Solomon
As I began to prepare for this sermon
The Lord immediately placed this thought on my heart/my mind - how do we do church in a meaningless world
What is church culture in a meaningless world?
Are we doing the right thing?
This morning I’m not going to be up here smashing my fist down saying
We need to change this and we need to change that and we need to do it now
Today I want to look at the 1st church in Acts
How did they do church?
Can we emulate what they did
In my mind I think that
Church culture plays a crucial role in offering meaning and hope in a world that often feels empty or directionless
The church can foster a sense of belonging, purpose, and deeper connection to those that are broken, lost, wandering
Perhaps church culture is not just about what a congregation does - its mission statements, programs, or traditions
But how it embodies its values and engages with people in our community and abroad
Church culture shapes the way it welcomes newcomers, supports its members, and communicates its message of faith
In a world where many struggle with existential questions, a church that cultivates authenticity, compassion, and spiritual depth can provide a refuge
That is my hope for our church - that we can be inviting, that we cultivate authenticity and relevancy in what we do, that we have spiritual depth
Here’s a thought that has bothered me for awhile now
Are we a church that is loving people for who they are? Are we chasing after them with compassion and showing Jesus
Or are we just a big old church country club
Where we are just simply exclusive, we’re not sharing Jesus with others and we have limited ourselves to nothing more than being an average church
I will tell you I was deeply convicted with this
I grew up in this community all my life
I grew up in Sugarcreek
Lived in Sugarcreek, Walnut Creek and Winesburg
For 49 years I have been embedded and entrenched in this area/community
And I will say this area/community is great to live in, a great place to raise a family, to have a job, to go to church, to build community, etc...
My conviction tells me it feels like we live in what I call the Holmes County bubble
In a bubble that’s hard for someone new, that’s may a little different from us, to assimilate in
This past year Pam, Collette and I moved up close to Canton and oh my, what a change for us
That bubble was popped for us
I will tell you as we are assimilating into our new neighborhood, we are just loving the area that God has placed us
Big Idea: In a world that often feels meaningless, the church serves as a vibrant community where believers can find purpose, belonging, and strength through Christ and one another
Today’s scripture is Acts 2: 42-47
This passage of scripture portrays the early church as a transformative community defined by devotion, unity, and love amidst a chaotic world, showcasing how the gospel creates genuine connection and purpose
To give a little context before this chapter
Jesus is gathered with his chosen apostles and is taken up to heaven
Matthias is chosen to replace Judas
This would be the first time that the lot was used in the New Testament
The lot was used several time in the Old Testament to discern God’s guidance, to divide land among the Israelites, and to select individuals for specific roles
The Hold Spirit was sent at Pentecost
First part of Acts 2 it says there were God fearing Jews from every nation staying in Jerusalem
They all heard there own language being spoken
They were truly amazed and asked the question aren’t these who are speaking Galileans?
How can we hear our own language being spoken
Amazed and perplexed they asked the question, what does this mean?
Of course there were those in the crowd that made fun of them
This is where Peter gets up and addresses the crowd of people
This is where I would say Peter took them to woodshed
He preached from a deep passion and conviction for Jesus
Acts 2-37 says they were cut to the heart (convicted) and asked the question, Brothers what shall we do?
Peter replied, repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins
In verse 41 it says those who accepted his message were baptized and about 3,000 were added to their number that day
Can you imagine going from 120 people to 3,000 just like that
Wendy and I would say that feels like a logistical nightmare
Pastor Charlie would say really? let’s go
This first church
They did things really, really well
They did koinonia and diakonia really well
Koinonia is a Greek word for fellowship, communion or shared participation
The New Testament it describes a deep bond among the believers in that first church
It emphasized unity, mutual support, and a spiritual connection
They shared together, their faith, their resources, and did life together
Diakonia is a Greek word for service, ministry, relief
In the New Testament it refers to active service done with a willing heart
They cared for each other, cared for the poor and handed out resources
They had a selfless love for each other and took practical action as they cared for each other
Keep these 2 words in your mind as we go through these verses

1. Devotion to Teaching, Fellowship, & Prayer

Acts 2:42 NIV
They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
Acts 2:43 NIV
Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles.

2. Radical Generosity & Community Support

Acts 2:44 NIV
All the believers were together and had everything in common.
Acts 2:45 NIV
They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need.

3. Consistent in Communion

Acts 2:46 NIV
Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts,
Acts 2:47 NIV
praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
Closing
To close out this morning, our methods of how do church may change
But who we are as a Church
As a body of believers
Our foundation, our doctrine will never change
