Sermon Title: Together in the Light – Growing Stronger Through Union with Christ
I. Introduction
Good evening, family! It’s a joy to be together this weekend. This weekend isn’t just about good weather (which were not having anyways), good food, or outdoor fun—although we’re all thankful for that! This is about something deeper: how we grow stronger as families, as a church, and as individuals—through our union with Christ.
Our theme today is: Growing Stronger Through Union with Christ.
We’re going to talk about three main truths:
Our union with Christ reflects the unity of the Trinity.
Our union with Christ makes us light-bearers in a dark world.
Christ has passed the torch to us — we are now called to carry and share His light.
Let’s open our hearts and minds to what God wants to teach us today. Our foundational Scripture comes from Jesus' high priestly prayer:
that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.
This prayer reveals Jesus' deep desire for unity — not just among believers, but between us and Himself. Unity is God’s design, His desire, and our destiny in Christ.
II. Our Union in Christ Reflects the Unity of God
A. Understanding the Trinity as the Model of Unity
A. Understanding the Trinity as the Model of Unity
Let’s talk family for a second. When a family is working together—loving, laughing, forgiving, helping—it’s a beautiful thing, right? That’s what the Trinity is like—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—three persons, one God, moving in perfect love and unity.
God exists eternally as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This is not a hierarchy or a loose partnership. It is perfect unity — a divine relationship of love, mutual honor, and shared purpose. They are not divided by roles or confused in function. They are one in essence, one in mission, one in glory.
I and the Father are one.”
This unity is foundational. Jesus is expressing His oneness with the Father, not just in spirit, but in action, thought, and will. This verse challenges us: can we say the same about our families? Are we one in purpose, one in love, one in mission?
Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.
This ancient confession is not just theology; it's family instruction. Right after this verse, Moses tells families to teach their children diligently and talk of God's commands at home, on the road, at bedtime, and when they rise.
Unity in God is the blueprint for unity in our families.
B. Implications for the Family
B. Implications for the Family
God designed the family to reflect His nature. When a family abides in Christ, it becomes a picture of the Trinity to the world — a community of different people bound together by love and purpose.
Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.
Unity doesn't happen by accident. The Apostle Paul tells us to strive for it. That means dealing with conflict, forgiving quickly, communicating with grace, and putting Christ at the center of every relationship.
Illustration: Think of a sports team. Every player has a unique role, but they follow the same game plan. If one person tries to play a different game, the whole team suffers. The same is true in a family. Everyone has different strengths, but unity comes when everyone follows Jesus.
Reflection Question: In what ways does our family reflect the unity of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit? What can we do to grow in that unity?
III. Union With Christ Makes Us a Light
A. Jesus is the Light
A. Jesus is the Light
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
Jesus isn’t just a source of light—He IS the Light. To follow Him means walking out of darkness into clarity, truth, and purpose. Darkness represents confusion, sin, and separation from God. But light brings vision, direction, and hope.
When we are united with Christ, His light shines through us. It isn’t about being perfect. It’s about reflecting the One who is.
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.
Jesus turns to His followers and says, "YOU are the light." I do want to make sure it's understood that we become the light THROUGH Christ. We are not naturally light. Continuing on, though, we are not to hide or shrink back. Our lives should shine with Christ’s character — in how we speak, love, forgive, and serve.
B. The Family as a Lighthouse
B. The Family as a Lighthouse
For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light
When we live in Christ, our families become lighthouses. Not just for ourselves, but for others. The world is dark. Families are breaking. Relationships are strained. But when people see a family that prays together, forgives quickly, and lives with joy, it becomes a powerful testimony.
Illustration: Have you ever driven through the fog and seen one clear porch light shining? That’s what a Christ-centered family is like in a foggy, confused culture.
Practical Ways to Shine as a Family:
Speak words of encouragement daily.
Have regular devotion times together.
Eat meals without screens and share your hearts.
Serve in your church and community together.
Reflection Question: What kind of light is our family giving off? Are we drawing people to Jesus through our unity?
IV. Christ Passed Us the Torch
A. The Holy Spirit Empowers Us
A. The Holy Spirit Empowers Us
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
After Jesus rose, He didn't say, "Now go try harder." He said, "Wait for the Holy Spirit." Why? Because unity, light-bearing, and spiritual strength come not from willpower, but from the Spirit’s power.
The Spirit helps us understand Scripture, convicts us of sin, strengthens our witness, and fills us with fruit like patience, kindness, and self-control — all things every family needs!
B. We Are Witnesses
B. We Are Witnesses
Being a witness isn’t just about preaching. It's about living in such a way that people see Christ in us. Teens, your school is a mission field. Parents, your workplace is too. Your home is the first church your children will ever know.
Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.
God’s Word guides us. It teaches us how to live, love, and lead. Families must be rooted in the Word to be effective light-bearers.
Parents: you’re not just raising kids—you’re raising disciples.
Teens: you’re not just “the future of the church.” You’re the church right now.
This is a relay race, not a solo sprint. We pass the baton of faith from one generation to the next.
Illustration: Imagine the Olympic torch relay. One runner passes it to the next, ensuring the flame reaches its destination. That’s our job. Christ gave us His flame. Now we pass it to our kids, neighbors, and friends.
Family Challenge: Are we preparing the next generation to carry the light?
V. Growing Stronger Together Through Christ
We don’t grow stronger by chance. We grow stronger by Christ.
5 Keys to Strengthening Your Family:
5 Keys to Strengthening Your Family:
Spend time in God’s Word together
Don’t just read the Bible alone. Parents and teens—do it together sometimes.
Pray together
Before school. Before bed. During tough seasons.
Serve together
Whether in church or the community, let your family shine as a team.
Forgive quickly
Unity dies when bitterness grows.
Speak life
Your words can either divide or build up.
By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
Love is the evidence of our union with Christ.
VI. Conclusion & Call to Action
Let me leave you with this:
The Father, Son, and Spirit live in perfect unity.
Jesus invites us into that unity.
When we are in Him, we become light to the world.
He passed the torch to us.
We grow stronger, not by our might, but by His Spirit.
“Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you.
Let’s commit today to reflect God’s unity, to shine His light, and to pass the flame of faith on to the next generation.
VII. Family Reflection and Prayer Time (Optional: 5-7 minutes)
Gather your families now.
Parents, place a hand on your child’s/teen’s shoulder. Pray over them.
Teens/children (if you are comfortable), pray for your parents.
Invite the Spirit to bring healing, unity, and purpose to your family.
Let’s grow stronger—together—through Christ.
