Last sermon - “Concerning Himself”
All of the Bible is about Jesus
Every text of scripture, there is a road to Christ
Pastor Brent “Passover”, The Lords Supper, & Communion
We will see this again this week as we look to the first book of the Bible; Genesis

Gospel

When we hear the word gospel, we may think Matt, Mark, Luke, John
Gospel means “good news”
The good news of God’s plan of salvation through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ
The gospel isnt just for unbleievers
When is the first time we see the Gospel?
Gen 3:15 is known as the Protoevangelium
Proto - Prototype “First type”
Euangelion - “Gospel”
We see from the beginning God’s plan of salvation promised
Quick Aside: The gospel was not an afterthought
Revelation 13:8 “and all who dwell on earth will worship it, everyone whose name has not been written before the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who was slain.”
1 Peter 1:19–20 “but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you”
Ephesians 1:4 “even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love”

Curse

Conflict

Curse

Before we have good news we must understand the bad news.
Some don’t trust in the savior because they don’t think they need saving
Testimony
Gen 3 heading “The Fall”
Context
God created the world
Creates man in his image
Gave him dominion over his creation
Puts him in the garden and says
Genesis 2:16–17 “And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.””
Describes the first marriage
Bone of bone and flesh of flesh. One flesh
Genesis 2:25 “And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.”
It was Good
Serpent
Satan
Revelation 12:9 “And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.”
Doubt
Did god actually say?
Deception
You cant eat of any tree?
Manipulation
You will be like God
Eve
Good for food
Delight to the eyes
Desired to make one wise
Our sin is appealing & we justify
The issue is not that the fruit was poisonous, it’s that god commanded them not to eat
Adam - standing by idle
“who was with her”
Shame
“Eyes were opened & and they knew they were naked”
Contrast Genesis 2:25 “And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.”
Fig Leaves
Attempt to cover their own shame
God will cover them in Genesis 3:21 “And the Lord God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them.”
They heard the lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day
God is walking, not running
Hid themselves
If covering doesnt work, we will run
There is not a nook or cranny in the universe that God does not have eyes on
Called to the man
Primary responsibility
APPLY RESPONSIBILITY & PASSIVITY OF MEN
“Have you eaten?”
Blame
Adam blames Eve & God
Eve blames serpent
Curse
the Serpent is cursed and we will see the consequence of our sin
Genesis 3:15 “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.””
Conflict - “enmity”
Hostility, conflict, wrath, hatred
Numbers talks about killing someone with or without enmity
Ezekiel 25:15–16“Thus says the Lord God: Because the Philistines acted revengefully and took vengeance with malice of soul to destroy in never-ending enmity,… therefore thus says the Lord God, Behold, I will stretch out my hand against the Philistines, and I will cut off the Cherethites and destroy the rest of the seacoast.”
What do you call groups of people who are in a state of hostile conflict
WAR
Because of this, satan… your offspring and her offspring… WAR
This is why the world is so broken… SIN destroys everything
Do you feel the conflict, the hostility, the pain?
Death, mourning, crying
WAR
Our consequence in 16-19
Toil, hardship, death
Before our judgement & consequence we see a promise
A Promise of a Conqueror
And as you read your bible I need you to have that in mind…
Curse, Conflict, Conqueror
Pretend you don’t know the story
You read through genesis not too much farther and you see
Chapter 4
Cain & Abel - The seed
Genesis 4:1 “Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying, “I have gotten a man with the help of the Lord.””
vs 8 Cain kills Abel
Conflict, death, there is war
Adam & Eve have Seth
Genesis 4:25 “And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and called his name Seth, for she said, “God has appointed for me another offspring instead of Abel, for Cain killed him.””
Gen 6 God sees that mankind is wicked & only evil continually - Conflict
He says he’s going to blot out man - Conflict
You worry is the seed going to be extinguished
He saves a remnant in Noah & his family
Noah has sons
One of them Shem
Shem has sons
One of them Terah
Terah has sons
One of them is Abram (Abraham)
God Calls Abraham
Re-ups his promise
He tells him through his offspring he will bless the nations
Isaac
The child of promise
Jacob (Israel)
Keep reading and you get to Jacob & Esau
Isaac loves Esau but Rebekah loved Jacob - Conflict
Esau sell his birthright
Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing
I will kill my brother Jacob - Conflict
Keep reading you see
Joseph & his brothers
Judah
“The scepter shall not depart”
Moses & Pharaoh
Pharaoh tries to kill all the babies and moses is found
David & Saul
David
2 Samuel 7:12–16 “When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. When he commits iniquity, I will discipline him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men, but my steadfast love will not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away from before you. And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever.’ ””
On and on it goes
Conflict, War, Enmity
We keep looking for the seed. The one to crush the serpents head.
But it appears that the seed of the serpent is dominating the seed of the woman.
Because in all the toil and conflict and struggle and war, there is still death. Every one we have seen that we thought might be the one has died
You wonder if God is going to go back on his promise because the seed still isn’t here and then you read
Psalm 132:11–12 “The Lord swore to David a sure oath from which he will not turn back: “One of the sons of your body I will set on your throne. If your sons keep my covenant and my testimonies that I shall teach them, their sons also forever shall sit on your throne.””
Isaiah 7:14 “Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.”
Immanuel - God with us
Isaiah 9:6–7 “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.”
Then you read
Micah 5:2 “But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days.
Then you reach your blank page… 400 years
400 years of silence
400 years of God doing nothing
400 years of war, toil, conflict
400 years of the seed of the serpent crushing the head of the woman
So it seems…
Then you get to Matthew
Matthew starts with a Genealogy of Jesus
Genealogy is God demonstrating his faithfulness
He made good on his promise
What looked like defeat was an orchestrated attack against the serpent to preserve the seed
“Just so happens”
Judah
Joseph is sold into slavery and because of it the family including Judah is saved from famine
Perez & Zerah by Tamar
Tamar disguises herself as a prostitute to sleep with her father in law Judah.
God in the midst of sin continues the seed
Rahab
Rahab the prostitute hides the Israelite spies
Ruth & Boaz
Ruth just so happened to glean in Boaz’s field
(Show
Virgin has conceived
Joseph as son of David)
Matthew 1:18–24 “Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us). When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife,”
He is in fact, God with us.
What we did not see coming is that the seed of the woman would be God himself coming on a rescue mission.
This Jesus experiences the curse
Galatians 3:13 “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”—”
He experiences the conflict
His temptation
Mark 1:12–13 “The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. And he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. And he was with the wild animals, and the angels were ministering to him.”
But he is the serpent crushing conqueror
1 John 3:8 “Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil.”
But his heel is bruised
The cross
On good Friday, perhaps the devil thought he was the one with the bruised heel and he had crushed the head of Jesus.
But on easter Sunday, that stone rolled away, and that born out of Bethlehem, Born of a Virgin Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace, God with Us, Eternal throne king walks out of the grave and his first step is right on the head of satan
1 John 3:8 “Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil.”
Christ’s victory over sin, death & the devil is your victory too.
who won ww2.
we did
you only get to participate in this victory by faith
In case you haven’t noticed, we’re still in the midst of a war.
You can trust God on your victory is because he promises it
Romans 8:35–39 “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
God made a promise in Gen 3:15
We can fight the war because he has already won the war
One day he will fling that ancient serpent into the lake of fire for eternity
We wait for another promise
Jesus - Save people from their sins
Second return
Hebrews 9:27–28 “And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.”
We will walk with him again
