Text: Matthew 10:16–31 ““Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves. But beware of men, for they will deliver you up to councils and scourge you in their synagogues. You will be brought before governors and kings for My sake, as a testimony to them and to the Gentiles. But when they deliver you up, do not worry about how or what you should speak. For it will be given to you in that hour what you should speak; for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you. “Now brother will deliver up brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death. And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved. When they persecute you in this city, flee to another. For assuredly, I say to you, you will not have gone through the cities of Israel before the Son of Man comes. “A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above…” , NKJV

Heavenly Father,
We come before You today with grateful hearts, acknowledging that You are the Sovereign Lord who reigns over heaven and earth. As we open Your Word, we ask for clarity of mind, softness of heart, and boldness of faith. Strengthen us, Lord, as we consider the cost of discipleship and the promise of Your presence. Help us to not fear those who can harm the body, but to revere You, the One who holds our soul secure. Teach us today, encourage us, and commission us anew. May Your Spirit illuminate the truth and empower us to live it out.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
🛡️ Sermon Outline
I. The Reality of Persecution (vv. 16–23)
I. The Reality of Persecution (vv. 16–23)
“Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves…” (v. 16)
Explanation:
Jesus warns His disciples that persecution is not a possibility—it’s a certainty. They are sent out “as sheep among wolves.” The world will oppose them because of Christ. They will be arrested, beaten, and hated—but not forgotten.
Jesus uses a metaphor we can all understand: we are sheep among wolves.
We are to be wise like the serpent, but harmless like the dove.
Often times we get mad and defensive, sometimes to the point of violence. We try to use scripture from the OT to justify it (Exodus 21:24). But in Matthew 5:38 Jesus clarifies for us we should turn the other cheek.
Jesus prepares His followers for hostility from both civil and religious powers (vv. 17-18).
We should know from scripture that the devil and his world will come against us when we follow and teach Christ.
Persecution is an opportunity to testify (v. 18).
Use the platform that the persecutors give you to preach Christ.
God will give His Spirit to speak through them (v. 19-20).
Here’s some of the best parts, don’t worry about what you will say when you are persecuted, let the Holy Spirit speak through you and He will say what is needed when it is needed.
Illustration:
Like a soldier who reads the mission briefing before entering battle, we too are not caught off guard. We know the risk, but we press on because the mission is worth it. As the soldier relies on their training, we rely on the indwelling of the Holy Spirit to bring us through the battle.
II. The Call to Persevere Without Fear (vv. 24–28)
II. The Call to Persevere Without Fear (vv. 24–28)
“And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul…” (v. 28)
Explanation:
Jesus shifts from persecution to the believer's response: fear not. The fear of man is powerless in light of eternal realities. Jesus assures us that no disciple is above persecution, but also that God sees and sustains.
A disciple should expect what the Master received (v. 24–25).
Jesus tells us they hate you because they hate me, they persecute you because they persecuted me, they call you evil because they called Jesus evil.
Fear must be placed properly—not in men, but in God (v. 28).
When we place our trust in God, we can do all things in Christ, who strengthens us. (Phil.4:13)
Temporary suffering does not compare to eternal consequences.
We should not fear man or the devil or can end our earthly life, but God who can end our eternal life and cast us into the lake of fire, mind, body and soul.
Illustration:
Imagine a man standing before a judge—he fears the courtroom but forgets the final judgment. We must not fear those who can harm only temporarily but honor the One who judges eternally.
III. The Assurance of God’s Care (vv. 29–31)
III. The Assurance of God’s Care (vv. 29–31)
“Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.” (v. 31)
Explanation:
In the face of danger, Jesus closes this section with assurance: You are known and valued by God. If God sees the sparrow fall and counts every hair on your head, surely, He is not absent from your pain.
God is sovereign over even the smallest creatures (v. 29).
And we are so much more to Him than the animals, we are made in His image.
Every detail of your life is known to Him (v. 30).
God is omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent and He knows you and every detail of your life, nothing is hidden from God. (V26)
You are of immense value to God (v. 31).
You are so valuable to Him that He gave His only begotten Son to die for your sins. (John 3:16)
Illustration:
A child unafraid in a storm because their parent is holding them—so we, held by our heavenly Father, need not fear life’s storms.
🧭 Application Section
🧭 Application Section
1. Application for Point I – Expect and Endure Persecution with Wisdom and Courage
If you are walking faithfully with Christ, expect pushback. Respond not with fear or retaliation, but with Spirit-led wisdom and a bold testimony. Let your suffering point others to Christ.
2. Application for Point II – Fear God, Not Man
Let your reverence for God override your fear of people. In school, work, or public life, stand firm. Eternity is at stake—live for the One who holds your soul.
3. Application for Point III – Trust in God’s Sovereign Care
In every circumstance, rest in the truth that you are known, valued, and cared for. God is not distant—He is present, powerful, and personal in your pain.
🎯 Conclusion & Invitation
🎯 Conclusion & Invitation
Brothers and sisters, Jesus never promised an easy path—but He promised His presence. As sheep among wolves, we go with the wisdom of serpents and the innocence of doves. Let us not be afraid. The One who calls us is the One who keeps us.
If you’ve never placed your faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, today is the day. He died to save you and lives to keep you. Fear Him—not in dread, but in awe—and you will find peace, hope, and eternal life.
Will you trust Him today?
