Introduction: A Silent Burden Many Believers Carry
Introduction: A Silent Burden Many Believers Carry
Beloved in Christ, today I want to speak to those who are silently struggling with something we rarely talk about in church—debt.
Maybe you took a loan for a genuine need—a medical emergency, house rent, a child’s education, or even business expansion.
But now you're stuck. You're working overtime, double shifts, weekends... yet the repayment never seems to end.
Somewhere along the line, you stopped attending church regularly, stopped praying consistently, and stopped serving.
You love God. But you're tired. And you feel like you're in a trap you can’t get out of.
Let us hear what the Word of God says—not with condemnation, but with hope, wisdom, and freedom.
Debt is Not Just a Financial Issue—It’s a Spiritual Bondage
Debt is Not Just a Financial Issue—It’s a Spiritual Bondage
> “The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is slave to the lender.” – Proverbs 22:7
This verse doesn’t say debt is sin—but it tells the truth: debt enslaves. It dictates your time, your choices, and even your peace.
You may be waking up thinking about EMIs and going to bed counting how many days are left before another payment is due.
Over time, it becomes a master—and the more you work for it, the less time you have to worship the true Master.
> “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other... You cannot serve both God and money.” – Matthew 6:24
“कसैले दुई मालिकको सेवा गर्न सक्दैन। किनभने त्यसले एउटालाई घृणा गर्नेछ र अर्कालाई प्रेम गर्नेछ। अथवा त्यसले एउटाप्रति भक्ति राख्नेछ, र अर्कालाई त्यसले तुच्छ ठान्नेछ। तिमीहरूले परमेश्वर र धनको सेवा गर्न सक्दैनौ।
That’s not just a verse for the rich—
it’s a word for the tired believer who is slowly drifting away from God in pursuit of survival.
Christ Has Called You to Freedom—Not Slavery Again
Christ Has Called You to Freedom—Not Slavery Again
> “For freedom Christ has set us free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.” – Galatians 5:1
Jesus didn’t die so that you could trade sin’s slavery for financial slavery.
He invites you to rest—not in your job, not in your savings—but in His care and promises.
> “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” – Matthew 11:28
“हे सबै थाकेका र बोझले दबिएका हो, मकहाँ आओ, म तिमीहरूलाई विश्राम दिनेछु।
Friend, if your job or your loan has robbed you of
Rest
peace
worship
—Jesus wants to restore that.
Steps Toward Freedom – Spiritually and Practically
Steps Toward Freedom – Spiritually and Practically
This is not just a spiritual issue; it's also practical. And God's Word offers wisdom in both.
A. Start with Prayer and Honesty
A. Start with Prayer and Honesty
Before you make a new financial plan, take time to sit with the Lord. Pour out your stress, your failure, your burden.
> “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all...” – James 1:5
B. Take Inventory and Budget Carefully
B. Take Inventory and Budget Carefully
Write down:
What you owe
Who you owe it to
What interest is applied
What you earn
Where your money goes
Sometimes, the issue is not lack of money—it’s mismanagement or lack of clarity.
C. Seek Godly Counsel
C. Seek Godly Counsel
> “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.” – Proverbs 15:22
Talk to a church leader, mature believer, or financial advisor with integrity. Don’t carry this alone.
D. Adjust Your Lifestyle Temporarily
D. Adjust Your Lifestyle Temporarily
God isn't against comfort—but sometimes we must sacrifice comfort to restore freedom.
Cut back unnecessary subscriptions, avoid impulse spending, and avoid new loans while repaying old ones.
E. Re-prioritize Worship and Service
E. Re-prioritize Worship and Service
Even in financial stress, make space for God. Be faithful in small ways. Come to worship. Join a small group. Serve in a simple way. God sees your heart more than your hours.
> “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” – Matthew 6:33
God's Promise: Peace Beyond Understanding
God's Promise: Peace Beyond Understanding
God isn’t waiting for you to finish paying your loan before He blesses you. He wants to walk with you now.
> “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”
“And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 4:6–7
You may not be able to pay everything overnight—but you can walk in peace today, knowing God is in control.
You are not alone. Many faithful believers have walked this road. And many have seen God provide in miraculous ways when they surrendered control.

Conclusion: Take One Step Today
Conclusion: Take One Step Today
Beloved, debt is not your destiny. Christ didn’t save you so you would live under pressure and isolation.
He wants to:
Restore your joy,
Rebuild your worship life,
And release you from the grip of financial fear.
So I ask you:
> What one step will you take this week?
Will you start a budget?
Will you speak to someone for counsel?
Will you set aside even just Sunday for God again?
And remember—freedom doesn’t start when the debt ends.
It starts when you trust God more than the loan.
Let us pray.
