I. THE PERSON—vv. 1–5

A. Christ—vv. 1–2

1. Past—“In the beginning was the Word.”

Revelation 19:13 NASB95
He is clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God.
Colossians 1:17 NASB95
He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.

2. Power—“And the Word was with God.”

Hebrews 1:3 NASB95
And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

3. Person—“And the Word was God.”

NO SLIDE
Philippians 2:5–11 NASB95
Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

4. Permanence—

In The Living Bible translation, John 1:2 states: "Before anything else existed, there was Christ, with God. He has always been alive and is himself God."

B. Creation—v. 3.

All things we see, and the unseen was created by Him. All the stars, planets, moon, sun, etc. were made by Him.
Colossians 1:16–17 NASB95
For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.
1 Corinthians 8:6 NASB95
yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom are all things and we exist for Him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we exist through Him.
Since Christ created all things, He Himself is uncreated.
Warren W. Wiersbe

C. Conversion—v. 4

1. Life

John 11:25–26 NASB95
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?”
This verse was engraved on George Washington’s Tomb
John 14:6 NASB95
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.

2. Light

Christ is the light spoken of in Isaiah 9:2. This was 740 B.C.
Isaiah 9:2 NASB95
The people who walk in darkness Will see a great light; Those who live in a dark land, The light will shine on them.
John 12:46 NASB95
“I have come as Light into the world, so that everyone who believes in Me will not remain in darkness.

D. Control v. 5

Christ was greater than all the darkness.
Though sin may be great and increasing, He is above all sin.
In The Living Bible translation, John 1:3-5 states, “God created everything through Christ, and Christ gave life to everything, with his life being the light that shines in the darkness, which the darkness cannot extinguish.”
Comprehend = Overpower, suppress, extinguish
John 3:19 NASB95
“This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil.
John 12:46 NASB95
“I have come as Light into the world, so that everyone who believes in Me will not remain in darkness.

II. THE PREPARATION—vv. 6–9

A. The method—v. 6

Notice “sent from God.”
John was an evangelist. God set in the church evangelists—Ephesians 4:11–12
Ephesians 4:11–12 NASB95
And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ;
Paul told Timothy to do the work of an evangelist
2 Timothy 4:5 NASB95
But you, be sober in all things, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.
God still works through man to evangelize man!

B. The message—v. 7

John gave witness, or proof of Christ, so that all men, through Him might be saved.
Acts 19:4 NASB95
Paul said, “John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in Him who was coming after him, that is, in Jesus.”

C. The messenger—v. 8

John was not the Light spoken of in Isaiah 9:2. He was just sent to give witness of this Light.
Isaiah 9:2 NASB95
The people who walk in darkness Will see a great light; Those who live in a dark land, The light will shine on them.

D. The man—v. 9

The Man Christ Jesus. He would give light to all mankind. Later, Jesus said He was the Light of the world—John 8:12.
John 8:12 NASB95
Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.”
1 John 2:8 NASB95
On the other hand, I am writing a new commandment to you, which is true in Him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true Light is already shining.
