Look into commentaries for cross-references that tie the teachings of Proverbs to the New Testament concepts of wisdom in Christ.
1. Prioritize God's Teachings
1. Prioritize God's Teachings
Proverbs 3:1-4
*My son, do not forget my teaching,
but let your heart keep my commandments;
2 *for length of days and long life
and peace will they add to you.
3 *Do not let mercy and truth forsake you;
bind them around your neck,
write them on the tablet of your heart,
4 *so you will find favor and good understanding
in the sight of God and man.
You could start by emphasizing how prioritizing God's teachings ensures that we do not miss out on the love and faithfulness that are central to a harmonious life. These verses suggest embedding God's commands into everyday life, like writing them on the heart. Perhaps explore the practical aspects of this embedding, such as meditation, prayer, and the daily application of Scripture, leading to rewards like favor and good repute before God and man.
Imagine a gardener who decides to water the weeds instead of the flowers, thinking it would make the garden grow. But weeds take over and stifle the beauty of the blooms! In our spiritual lives, prioritizing God’s teachings helps us nurture the beautiful things He has planted in us. Let’s focus on watering what truly matters and that is the things of God it is easy when your in school or heading to the next level or grade that we get caught up in fitting in or focusing on the teachings and things of the school that we can sometimes forget the the things of God but much like the gardner in our story we have ensure that we are tending the garden of my heart. i cant gauge the things of God by the level that the world sets but i must in all things trust and prioritize the things of God. it gets harder the higher you go the teaching is more intense and then work comes into play but we cannot let or focus shift we must fully prioritize Gods teaching.
2. Trust in the Lord Fully
2. Trust in the Lord Fully
Proverbs 3:5-6
5 *Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
and lean not on your own understanding;
6 *in all your ways acknowledge Him,
and He will direct your paths.
You might explore the profound truth that trusting God with all our heart and refusing to lean on our understanding can transform our paths. Perhaps highlight the importance of acknowledging God in every aspect of life for divine guidance. This could be linked to the message of Christ as our guide, who we trust to lead us through life's challenges, echoing His promise of spiritual clarity and purpose.
our flesh is a funny thing that can and will lead us down the wrong path. see the bible says that the heart is contiually wicked what man can know it there is somethng about leaning on our own that will always get us in a wreck. Joshua has entered the promise land and there was a group of kings that got together and said man we know what their God can do lets trick them and well take old clothes and old wine skins and moldy bread and well put dust on ourselves and well tell the israelites that we are from afar and that we need to make a pact with them so they dont kill us and our people and Joshua and the people agreed and made an oath with them and shortly after they find out that they are indeed their neighbors and they tricked them see God said destroy them all but they made a pact without consulting God. so in the end those people stayed and were a thorn in their side. if they wouod have consulted God things could have been different we cant see but right infornt of us but God can see way down the road we have to trust in him and not to our own understandng.
3. Humble Holiness Heals
3. Humble Holiness Heals
Proverbs 3:7-8
7 *Do not be wise in your own eyes;
fear the Lord and depart from evil.
8 *It will be health to your body,
and strength to your bones.
Consider discussing how these verses encourage humility before God and the shunning of evil, resulting in spiritual and physical vitality. Perhaps connect this with how Christ's humility serves as a model for us, leading to life and health when we submit and yield to God’s transformative work. This might resonate with those grappling with pride, emphasizing the peace that comes with honoring God first.
in all the education that we gain and the higher we go its important that we remain humble its easy as a teen and learning knew things that we begin to believe we can teach our parents some things. i remember at the age of 16 that i could have educated my parents on how to live life but we must realize that we are not the wisest and we cannot let ourselves deceive ourselfs and we must be humble now we might ask how. i always thought humble was me thinking oh im nothing im worthless flesh, we are however humble is not thinking less of y0ourself its not putting yourself down its thinking of yourself less meaning im not the center of the show and i need to put God first. fearing God is that deep reverence and respect for him. if we are humble and we fear God then all we have to do is depart form eveil and it will be health to your bones.
4. Honor God with Generosity
4. Honor God with Generosity
Proverbs 3:9-10
9 *Honor the Lord with your substance,
and with the first fruits of all your increase;
10 *so your barns will be filled with plenty,
and your presses will burst out with new wine.
Perhaps delve into the call to honor God with one's wealth and resources, demonstrating trust in His provision. These verses encourage a generosity that reflects God’s own giving nature, suggesting that doing so results in abundant blessings. Highlighting Jesus’ teaching on giving and stewardship could illustrate how honoring God financially leads to being blessed spiritually and materially.
In the New Testament, a widow gave two small coins to the temple, which was all she had. Jesus pointed out that it wasn’t about the amount, but her willingness to give whatever she could. Imagine if we all gave like that widow, perhaps not in money, but in our time or talents. Generosity isn’t about the size of the gift; it’s about honoring God with what we have, big or small! How can we give our two coins today? this is makiing sure that school and work dont come before God and as a youth Pastor i see if to many times where parents will keep kids home from youth service or bible study for homework but wont miss a homework page or day of school for God. we have to put our talents to use not only in the world but in here for the greater good of the kingdom.
5. Embrace Divine Discipline
5. Embrace Divine Discipline
Proverbs 3:11-12
11 *My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord,
nor be weary of His correction;
12 *for whom the Lord loves He corrects,
even as a father the son in whom he delights.
You could explain how these concluding verses speak to the loving correction from God, likening it to parental guidance aimed at growth. This might relate to understanding discipline as a form of divine love through Christ, whose sacrifices were driven by love and result in character shaping. This section serves as a reminder of the ongoing process of God’s loving discipline and reassurance of His paternal care.
In the Bible, Proverbs 3:11-12 tells us not to despise the Lord's discipline but to embrace it because it reflects His love. Think of a gardener pruning a rose bush—it looks harsh at first, but in time, those careful cuts lead to a more beautiful and fruitful plant. Embracing divine discipline can lead to our own blooming in faith! see what the tree dont understand is that the branches at the root are what what we call suckers and they take form the tree but do not give any fruit or value. however when the gardner comes and he cuts off the shoots the tree dont understand that its a unnecessary branch it just feels the pain of the cut but if the suckers are cut more nutrients flow to the fruit bearing branches and it gains larger fruit. we must trust in discipline by focusing and being intentional to the things of God and he will direct our path.
