As most of you know, we have been doing a study on Apologetics. This again just means that we are looking at arguments made against the bible. One of the arguments against the bible is argument that many if not most of the things in the bible are not true.
Friedrich Nietzsche, a philosopher from the 1800’s is famous for saying, “The bible is the greatest book of lies ever written.”
The famous American author Mark Twain once wrote, “The bible has noble poetry in it; and some clever fables…and upwards of a thousand lies.”
The bible certainly makes the claim that it is truth throughout it. Jesus declared in John 17:17
John 17:17 NKJV
17 Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.
Paul wrote in 2 Timothy 2:15
2 Timothy 2:15 NKJV
15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
The proverb writer declared in Proverbs 30:5
Proverbs 30:5 ESV
5 Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.
However, mankind has always struggled with the idea of truth. Pilot famously said after Jesus told him “Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice” in John 18:38
John 18:38 NKJV
38 Pilate said to Him, “What is truth?” And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, “I find no fault in Him at all.”
And here in lies the very problem with so many people and the bible. Throughout time mankind has striven to make truth relative. By that I mean people would rather “truth be whatever they believe” than “a fact based on evidence.”
This is why people ask the question “what is truth” or say things like “my truth verse your truth” today. This idea that truth is only what one says is true is why so many reject the bible. God’s word does not care if someone believes it is true or if they believe something the bible contracts is true, it simply states what is true.
Now to be clear the bible has written down what people say that was not true. For example in Genesis 3 we read about Satan lying to Eve. However, the bible accurately described what Satan said and thus told the truth about it.
There is such a thing as absolute truth or more accurately “truth” and in reality all those that believe that truth is only based on one’s opinion is lying.
How do I know this, because if you take everyone who believes that truth is simply what one’s believes to be true and tell them to jump off a tall building because gravity isn’t true, none of them will jump. Why because they know gravity is true and that it isn’t an opinion.
The bible is no different. We can know it is true because the evidence of it being true cannot be denied by anyone that believes in truth.
It was written by over 40 different men, over a 1500 year period of time, and has never been found to inaccurate in anything historical, scientific, and has zero contradictions within it. That makes it mathematically impossible to not be from God and not just man.
So when the Psalmist, inspired by God in Psalm 119:160 writes…
Psalm 119:160 NKJV
160 The entirety of Your word is truth…
We can not just believe it, but find comfort in it.
