Proverbs 3:5-6 - The Father's Toolbox
(English below)
As Father's Day approaches, I found myself reflecting on childhood memories with my dad. One particular memory from when I was about five years old perfectly illustrates how we often approach our relationship with God.
A Five-Year-Old's "Wisdom"
Picture this: My family was gathered in our entryway, and my dad was standing on a chair with a screwdriver, working on a light fixture that wasn't functioning. As he worked to connect the electricity and fix the problem, I watched from below with my mom and siblings.
Being the "helpful" son I was, I started thinking he didn't really know what he was doing. After all, everyone knows a light won't turn on when the switch is off, right? So I walked over to the wall, reached up, and pushed the light switch to make it work.
The moment I flipped that switch, I heard "Aah!" from above.
My mom quickly said, "Don't turn the light switch on—you're going to hurt him!"
At five years old, I knew that pushing the button made lights turn on and off. That was my truth. But I had no idea what my dad was actually doing up there or how it affected that simple button. I didn't understand the electrical systems, the safety concerns, or the complexity of the repair.
Our Relationship with Our Heavenly Father
This childhood moment perfectly captures how we often live in relationship with God our Father. We sense problems in life that need fixing. The Bible tells us we can trust that God is working behind the scenes, taking care of things. But then we look around and think, "No, He's not. I know how to fix this. I know what He needs to do."
We get caught in that tension between wanting to trust and thinking we know better. Sometimes we decide, "Forget this—I'm going to do it my way." And if you've done that, you know the eventual result: "Oh man, what was I thinking?"
There are countless places in life where we think we understand cause and effect, not realizing all the details we have no clue about that are in God's hands. We don't understand what the Lord is doing behind the scenes in each person's heart within relationships. When we can't figure out which direction to go, we sometimes don't see that God is actually setting things up so that when He gives us the next step, it's perfect.
The Wisdom of Trusting the Professional
Consider the difference between a professional and an amateur. A professional football player knows how to navigate situations and use proper technique. Me? I'd simply end up in the hospital.
I used to try fixing my car all the time because I didn't want to pay someone else. But because I wasn't truly qualified, I'd often break bolts while working underneath, creating bigger problems when I needed to get to work the next day. I learned to recognize my limitations and ask professionals for help because I didn't want my life to be chaos.
The same principle applies to other areas. We have a septic tank at our house—do I work on it myself because I want to be cool? Absolutely not. I call a professional because I don't even want to learn that particular skill.
But imagine calling a professional to fix a leaking sink, and they arrive in a small car with no tools in the back. They walk in empty-handed and say, "Let's work on this thing." That would make you nervous because they might as well be an amateur without the proper equipment.
God's Toolbox
We have a Professional working in our lives and hearts day after day—our heavenly Father. And He has His toolbox. Let me share what's in it by comparing it to a regular toolbox.
The Hammer: What do you do with a hammer in a building way? You either break wood apart or drive nails into wood to build and strengthen. God constantly tears down the walls that divide His people, and the Bible says He is constantly building up His church, edifying and strengthening us.
The Tape Measure: This precision instrument ensures things fit together properly without gaps. You've experienced those times when it seemed like a coincidence that you ran into someone, but your life's pathway changed. That's because God is precise. He orders circumstances with purpose, which is why we can look back and see His involvement at specific points.
The Flashlight: This brings light into dark places, helping us see what we couldn't see before. When our heavenly Father uses His "flashlight," He gives us revelation—spiritual understanding into situations we were blind to. Jesus said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."
Electrical Tape: This covers dangerous wires so we don't get shocked. First Peter 4:8 says, "Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, because love covers a multitude of sins." When we harbor resentment toward someone, God wants to protect us from that attacking our hearts. That's why He says don't hold grudges—show love. Colossians 3:14 adds that love "binds everything together in perfect harmony."
The Battery: This provides power for tools to have life and function. Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life." When our battery starts draining and we feel like we have nothing left, our Father has a tool for that—the battery charger. As we spend time with Jesus, we plug into the source of life, and He recharges and refreshes us.
The Heart of the Matter
When you see a professional's toolbox, it reminds you that God has every single tool He needs to work good in your life and heart. He has everything necessary to lead you, provide for you, and love you.
This brings us to our key passage from Proverbs 3:5-6, written by King Solomon to his son—a father giving wisdom: "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and don't lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths."
God calls us to trust Him, to trust that He knows what He's doing and is doing His work, especially when we don't understand what's happening. Even when we think it's just a simple "light switch" situation and we know what's going on, we still need to trust Him because we really don't have the full picture.
Acknowledging the Professional
"In all your ways acknowledge Him" means recognizing that God is there with you at every point of your life. Some translations say "know Him"—the idea is to recognize the Professional standing right beside you. Don't ignore the Professional and try to do everything yourself. Follow and recognize that God is right there with you, and He actually has a plan He wants to lead you on.
An old commentary puts it well: "You are commanded to depend on God, not on yourself. Anyone who trusts in his own heart is a fool. Self-sufficiency and self-dependence have been the ruin of mankind ever since Adam's fall. The greatest sin of the human race is their constant attempt to live independently of God."
To acknowledge God in all your ways means not trying to do everything apart from Him, not trying to live apart from Him. Self-sufficiency and self-dependence—believing we have everything we need to live life on our own—is a trap.
The Promise
If we live by self-dependency and self-sufficiency, our path will be crooked. But if we recognize that God is right there, that He knows what He's doing, if we acknowledge Him and trust Him, He will make our path straight. He'll faithfully lead us in the best way to go—the way that draws us closer to Him and glorifies His name.
We don't want to be like me at five years old, thinking I had everything figured out, just pushing buttons to see what happens. We're called to trust the Lord. He knows what He's doing. Be patient and trust Him.
He's got the tools. He's got the ability. He created everything, and He loves you. So we're called to trust Him with all our hearts.
