Title of the Message this Morning is:
Loving Presence: A Father’s Day Message
Loving Presence: A Father’s Day Message
Main idea
Main idea
God the Father is ever-present, always listening, and full of self-giving love.
Since we are created in His image, we have the ability, through the gentle presence of the Holy Spirit, to become like Him and even parent like him.
True masculinity is rooted in self-giving love, and is not toxic but instead healthy and transformative.
We need fathers who will be present as God is present, listen as God listens, and offer themselves in self-giving love to their family.
Prayer:
“Father, thank you that you are GOOD.
You are light, and in you there is no darkness at all.
Help us to become more like you.
Help us to love the way you love, to share the way you share, and be present the way you are present.
Help us earthly fathers to become mirror-images of your heavenly presence.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
Scriptures: Genesis 1:27, Colossians 3:10, Ephesians 6:4, Philippians 4:6, Exodus 22:22-23

Introduction
Introduction
Hello Church! Happy Father’s Day! There’s a lot of talk about “toxic masculinity” in our culture today.
Any way of life or worldview that isn’t grounded in self-giving love becomes toxic.
Toxicity is not limited to masculinity.
There is such a thing as “toxic femininity” as well.
Just about anything can become toxic, like religion, politics, work, culture, and relationships.
When something is toxic, it is harmful, negative, and destructive.
Jesus taught that Satan, who is God’s enemy and our enemy, actually works in the world to make things toxic.
The enemy comes to “steal, kill, and destroy” (John 10:10).
The enemy has destroyed masculinity and tricked us into believing false versions of it.
The false version of masculinity encourages men to
(a) suppress or hide their emotions and avoid appearing vulnerable;
(b) always be dominant and in- control;
(c) handle problems on their own without seeking help from others; and
(d) devalue and control women.
Those versions of masculinity are definitely toxic!
And the reason they are toxic is because none of them are rooted in the character of God.
We don’t see anything like that in the life or teaching of Jesus, who Himself is the perfect example of masculinity.
True masculinity is not toxic but healthy and transformative!
True masculinity means being present in the lives of our kids and families.
True masculinity means being a listener as much as a talker.
And, true masculinity is rooted in self-giving love.
How do I know this?
Because God, our Father, is ever-present, always listening, and full of self-giving love.
And everyone here is created in His image.
YOU ARE CREATED IN GOD’S IMAGE.
The Bible says,
“God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them” (Genesis 1:27).
Everyone here has the ability, through the gentle presence of the Holy Spirit, to become like Him and even parent like Him.
We need men and fathers who are present as God is present;
who listen as God listens; and who offer themselves in self-giving love to their families.

I. Why are fathers so important?
I. Why are fathers so important?
You can go home and Google the impact that a loving and present father has on his family.
Studies are very consistent.
The presence of a loving and supportive father makes a huge difference in the life of a child:
Children with supportive and involved fathers tend to have better relationships with their peers and healthier emotional regulation.
They also tend to perform better academically with fewer behavioral problems.
A supportive and involved father tends to emphasize rules, justice, and discipline which can help a child understand the consequences of their actions and develop a sense of responsibility.
Fathers tend to have a different parenting style compared to mothers, which provides their children with diverse experiences.
Fathers tend to encourage risk-taking and independence, while mothers may offer nurturing and emotional support.
The combination of these styles helps the child develop a well-rounded approach to life.
Overall, supportive and involved fathers benefit their children in critical ways for their physical, emotional, social, and academic development.
Conversely, children without a supportive and involved father tend to have lower self-esteem and more fragile emotional security.
They may feel abandoned and struggle more with their emotions.
Children from fatherless homes tend to do poorer academically, are more likely to drop out of high school, have lower scores on reading and math tests.
This lower performance academically can extend into adulthood affecting their professional qualifications and job prospects.
A significant percentage of youth in prison come from fatherless homes.
Children who grow up without fathers are more likely to enter into partnerships early, experience higher rates of divorce, and have children outside of marriage.
This cycle can perpetuate a cycle of instability and disadvantage.
It’s important to note that these statements are generally true.
If you are a single mother, or if you grew up in a household without the presence of a loving and supportive father, it doesn’t mean you are destined for a negative outcome.
Every family is unique.
Many single-parent households thrive because of the presence of love, stability, and support from the single parent and their extended family, church family, and friends.
But, these statements do emphasize the importance of a loving and present father!
II. Fathers need to be present as God is present
II. Fathers need to be present as God is present
One thing God always gives us is His presence.
He is always with us.
Presence is a mark of fatherhood. Consider these scriptures:
"Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you”(Deuteronomy 31:6).
“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me” (Psalm 23:4).
"Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast” (Psalm 139:7-10).
"And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age”(Matthew 28:20).
God is always present with us, did you know that?
You never leave the presence of God.
In the Old Testament, people went to the Temple to be close to God, but now in the New Covenant, God has put His presence inside of us.
God says He will never leave you nor forsake you.
STORY:
Pastor,
One evening, I was sitting alone in my living room, feeling overwhelmed by the weight of my worries.
I picked up my Bible and began to read the Psalms.
As I read Psalm 34:18, 'The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit,'
I felt an undeniable warmth wash over me. It was as if God was sitting right beside me, whispering comfort into my soul.
In that moment, I knew I wasn't alone; His presence filled the space, bringing peace to my troubled heart.
A. God has a heart for those whose fathers are not present
A. God has a heart for those whose fathers are not present
Presence is such an important thing with God.
He wants you to know that He’s always there, always with you.
And, the Bible teaches us that God has a heart for those whose fathers are not present.
God says he hears the cries of those whose fathers are not present.
“Do not take advantage of the widow or the fatherless. If you do and they cry out to me, I will certainly hear their cry” (Exodus 22:22-23).
The Bible says,
“He defends the cause of the fatherless,” (Deuteronomy 10:18).
And also,
”A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling” (Psalm 68:5).
B. How to be present
B. How to be present
God has a heart for those whose fathers are not present.
For those of us who ARE present, how can we be MORE present?
One practice of being present is to be a better listener.
When we listen, we are paying attention.
We are focusing on someone and giving them space in our hearts and minds.
To be a better listener means we put down our technology and eliminate distractions that inhibit relationship.
We need to put down our cell phones, shut off the television, and get rid of whatever noise is distracting us from really listening and being present with
(a) our kids,
(b) our spouse,
(c) anyone else who we love and want to deepen a relationship with.
How good of a listener are you?
• Do you interrupt?
• Do you wait for someone to stop talking so that you can begin?
• Do you make eye contact and avoid distractions?
• Do you restate what you hear someone say in order to understand?
• Do you really know what’s going on in the mind and heart of the one you love?
Listening is the best way to practice presence.
Listening is critical for relationship.
I want to encourage you to become a better listener this week.
Most of us can get better at listening!
Studies show that when two people are having a conversation, each person is talking 60% of the time.
Let me say that again.
Studies show that when two people are talking to one another, each person is talking 60% of the time!
That means we spend a lot of time talking over one another and interrupting one another.
Toxic masculinity does not listen well.
True masculinity, the kind that is Christlike and Godly, serves the one in front of them and in humility teaches them to listen more than they talk.
If you become a better listener, your marriage will improve, your relationship with your kids will improve, and your friendships will deepen.
Listening is an act of humility.
God is always available to hear our prayers because God is humble.
Remember, God is ever-present and always listening, and we are being renewed into the image of our Creator!
“You have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator” (Colossians 3:9-10).
Let us take off our old selves which seek to talk and dominate conversations, and instead put on our new self, which listens in humility.
When we do this, others will begin to realize that we have their best interests in mind, and that we are a safe person for them.
The Bible tells us,
“Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord” (Ephesians 6:4).
One of the most exasperating things for kids — especially teenagers — is that their parents won’t listen or understand them.
Listening is one of the ways to avoid exasperating our kids.
This doesn’t mean we agree with our kids, but it does mean we listen to them and give them space to express themselves.
Let’s become better listeners starting today!
III. Fathers love as God loves
III. Fathers love as God loves
For my last point, I want to re-emphasize that true masculinity is rooted in self-giving love.
This is contrasted with toxic masculinity which is rooted in
self-getting love.
Self-giving love listens attentively to understand the other person's feelings and perspectives without interrupting.
Self-getting love listens with the intent to respond, focusing on what you will say next rather than truly understanding the other.
Self-giving love pitches-in to help with household tasks to lighten the load for others.
Self-getting love expects others to do tasks for you without offering to help in return.
Self-giving love acknowledges and appreciates the contributions of others, giving credit where it’s due.
Self-getting love seeks recognition and praise for itself, even when it is a group effort.
Self-giving love offers support and being there for someone during their tough times, regardless of inconvenience.
Self-getting love spends time with others only when it’s convenient for them or when they stand to gain something.
Self-giving love encourages and cheers others to pursue their dreams and reach their full potential.
Self-getting love discourages others from growing or advancing, especially if it means they might surpass you.
Self-giving loveforgives others when they make mistakes, knowing that no one is perfect.
Self-getting love holds grudges and uses past mistakes against others to manipulate or control them.
Self-givinglove makes time for others, even when it’s inconvenient, to show you care.
Self-getting love takes others' time for granted, expecting them to be available whenever you need them.
Self-giving love genuinely celebrates the achievements and successes of others.
Self-getting love feels jealous or resentful of others' success and wants it for yourself.
Self-giving lovewillingly makes sacrifices to benefit others, whether it’s time, resources, or comfort.
Self-getting love expects others to make sacrifices for your benefit without reciprocating.
God’s core nature is self-giving love.
1 John 4:8 says, “God is love.”
Let us love as God loves, sacrificially and for the benefit of others!
Conclusion
Conclusion
God the Father is ever-present, always listening, and full of self-giving love.

True masculinity is rooted in self-giving love, and is not toxic but instead healthy and transformative.
We need fathers who will be present as God is present, listen as God listens, and offer themselves in self-giving love to their family.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
If you’d would like to receive Jesus today, please pray this prayer with all of us:
