Bible Passage: John 3:31–36
31 He who comes from above is above all. He who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks in an earthly way. He who comes from heaven is above all.
32 He bears witness to what he has seen and heard, yet no one receives his testimony.
33 Whoever receives his testimony sets his seal to this, that God is true.
34 For he whom God has sent utters the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure.
35 The Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hand.
36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.
Summary: John 3:31-36 highlights the contrast between earthly wisdom and the divine wisdom of Christ. It emphasizes that while mortal perspectives are limited, Jesus comes from the Father and fully embodies the truth that leads to salvation, making a clear distinction that those who believe in Him receive eternal life.
Application: This passage invites believers to evaluate the sources of their knowledge and assurance in life. By placing their faith in Christ, they can find stability and peace amidst life's uncertainties, encouraging them to engage deeper with Jesus' teachings—serving as their compass and source of truth in a world filled with conflicting messages.
Teaching: The sermon teaches that Christ's origin is divine, and His message is transformative. By submitting to His authority and embracing His truth, believers are empowered to navigate their spiritual journey confidently and securely, with the promise of eternal life in view.
How this passage could point to Christ: In all Scripture, Christ is the ultimate revelation of God’s truth and purpose. He is depicted as the incarnate Word, the source of eternal life, who fulfills the prophecies and serves as the bridge between humanity and God, revealing the Father's love and plan for redemption.
Big Idea: True spiritual assurance and clarity come from recognizing Christ's unique authority, leading believers to trust in His promise of eternal life while rejecting the fallacies of worldly wisdom.
Recommended Study: As you prepare your sermon, consider exploring Logos for deeper insight into the theological implications of Christ's divine authority in John 3. Investigate the contrasting themes of earthly versus heavenly knowledge present in the text and their relevance in the modern context. Additionally, examining commentaries that elaborate on the significance of the relationship between the Father and the Son can enrich your understanding and proclaiming of this passage.
1. Supremacy of the Savior
1. Supremacy of the Savior
31 He who comes from above is above all. He who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks in an earthly way. He who comes from heaven is above all.
John moves on in his description of Jesus
John has just stated He must increase and I must decrease
John is giving reason for this statement in his next verse
John has alluded to Jesus Supremacy
26 John answered them, “I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know,
27 even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.”
throughout the chapters thus far when we see John
He reverts to Jesus supremacy
He looks at Jesus above all
The people present needed to understand a great thing was happening
they were witnessing God in the flesh
John states He is above all
John states that he is from the earth just as we are
but Jesus is from Heaven
what a glorious moment
Jesus has come and John says not only is the Son of Man present but He is supreme
You see a vital part of salvation is the fact that Jesus is above all
For us to receive Salvation
We must be pardoned by one with the power to do so
Jesus has all the power on heaven and earth
He has been given authority
He is Supreme
He is the God who loves
All wisdom and authority in truth come from above
Jesus supremacy would stand the test of time
Jesus is to be called the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords according to Revelation
A vital part of Salvation is knowing the truth about the one in which we serve
The almighty loving God
and His Son
They love us
The ones above all care for us
To the point that Jesus would even die for us!
You could explore how this verse articulates the supremacy and divine origin of Jesus’ wisdom compared to earthly perspectives. Highlight the importance of looking to Christ as the ultimate source of truth and guidance. This understanding should encourage believers to prioritize His teachings over any worldly influence, emphasizing that true wisdom and authority come from above.
2. Certainty of Christ's Testimony
2. Certainty of Christ's Testimony
32 He bears witness to what he has seen and heard, yet no one receives his testimony.
33 Whoever receives his testimony sets his seal to this, that God is true.
Next John moves to certainty of Christ
many would doubt Jesus
the leaders of the Jews would constantly attempt to entrap Him
They would doubt His stories
They would doubt His teachings
they would doubt His calling
they would doubt His purpose
In all of that is what John is saying no one receives His testimony
Jesus was not and is still not widely accepted in the world today
You say Pastor a large number of people say the believe in Jesus
I would argue that a large number of people believe in their Jesus
They believe in a Jesus that does not perfectly align with His teaching
They want a Jesus that blends with the world
John the Baptist is saying that this is not that kind of king
this is the Lord of Lords
This is the above all
this is the one from above
He does not convert to worldly standards
but instead calls us to convert to heavenly standards
John is saying the testimony of Jesus is pure truth
it is the legitimate words of God
They hold authority for how we should live life
they are a guiding beacon in our lives
When we have questions about how to live
turn to the life of Jesus!
Turn with open eyes and an open heart
this way we can see truth!
The greatest eternal truth is salvation
another eternal truth is that Jesus has commanded us to pursue God instead of worldliness
Whoever receives the testimony of Jesus
receive as in take it all in
take the word as truth
thus it will see you in the eyes of God
Perhaps focus on the witness of Christ and the testimony He provides about heavenly truths. Encourage the congregation to embrace and affirm Christ’s testimony despite the prevalent doubts and limited understanding in the world. Highlight how accepting Jesus’ words as truth empowers and emboldens believers to live lives rooted in faith and security.
3. Completeness in Christ's Message
3. Completeness in Christ's Message
34 For he whom God has sent utters the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure.
35 The Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hand.
Christ’s message is complete John says next
it is a completeness proved upon the Holy Spirit
John says we can be sure because this is the one from God
He gives from the Spirit without Measure
because He is of the Spirit
the Spirit is within and with Him
In this final part of 25 John says
God loves the Son
the Son has been given all things
The Son has the power of God
They are one in the same as we have already studied
Jesus as been given all power and authority
and in this we know what He says is true because He is from God
What is from God is always true
Isaiah even prophesied this about Jesus
2 And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.
It has been prophesied from the beginning
Jesus will be filled with the Spirit
What a powerful understanding to the testimony of Jesus
Engage with how these verses affirm that Jesus speaks the words of God with complete authority and the Spirit without measure. This could inspire listeners to see the richness available in fully embracing Jesus’ teachings and experiencing the fullness of God’s presence. Stress that in Christ, believers have access to the full expression of God’s love and wisdom.
4. Eternal Decision Demanded
4. Eternal Decision Demanded
36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.
John then almost repeats part of what Jesus said to Nicodemus in 16
Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life
This is huge
two separate people
one being the Son of God
the other being the messenger sent before Him
almost 16 verses apart JTB almost reiterates what Jesus says and He wasn’t there to hear Him say it
John says you must believe in God and you will have eternal life
What an evidence of God’s divine way
the messenger and the Messiah stating spiritual truth together
The opposite of that call to salvation is given by John though
it is one of pain and suffering
it is one of struggle
it is one of hurt
it is eternal death and the wrath of God remains on Him
the true wrath of God is Him turning His back on us
we don’t realize it but that is worse than anything else
God’s presence means life and creation
without that everything is drear, dead, painful, and hopeless
Maybe conclude with the decision that stands before each person: belief and eternal life versus rejection and divine wrath. Encourage a response to the call of faith, urging listeners to trust in Christ for eternal assurance. This choice not only impacts the future but transforms believers in the present, providing peace and purpose.
