Introduction

Thankful for this opportunity.
Thankful for the Spiritual Appetizers Podcasting Network and Corey Johnson for this opportunity.
A little about my self for this first podcast, for those that do not know me.
Name: Landon Rowell
Married to my lovely wife Kristin and we have two biological kids and have raised several others from here in the community, even adopting one of them.
Preacher: Ramona church of Christ since December 2010.
The church here is small, but faithful.
I have been preaching full time since my graduation from BTSOP in 2005 starting in Hydro, OK and now for the last almost 15 years as of December 2025 in Ramona, OK.
I also do a weekly audio podcast called “Kids Bible Minute” that is available each Wednesday that is geared toward kids, though it is not “just simply teachings” and many families use it to study together as a family.
In addition to the podcasts I teach for the Online Academy of Biblical Studies or OABS on Monday evenings for the school in the spring and fall and will be starting to teach for their classes geared towards preachers this fall on Saturdays.
This is a great work online only that makes it very flexible for those that cannot move to attend a preaching school.
Well that is enough about me…
Why am I doing this particular podcast?
My goal with this podcast is to start with Genesis 1 and eventually end with Revelation 22 by studying each week, each individual chapter.
If we can know the main point of each chapter of the bible, this is a great benefit to us in our understanding of God’s precious message and our ability to “meditate on it day and night” (Psalm 1:2).
Ok, lets dive right in to Genesis 1.

The Point Of The Chapter

The Creation Of The Universe

The famous atheists Stephen Hawking once wrote…
“The universe is governed by the laws of science…Matter space, and time are all this is needed to create the universe.”
Interestingly enough the key verse of Genesis 1 describes the creation of all three things to “create the universe.
Genesis 1:1 ESV
1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
In this single verse we have…
The creation of time “in the beginning.”
The creation of space “the heavens.”
The creation of matter “the earth.”
Though the point of this podcast is not to prove that God created the universe here in our study but rather to point to unfold the truth of God’s word in this chapter, it should be noted that proving evolution as inadequate is not difficult.
If anyone watching or listening to this podcast would like more information on such I can certainly make that information available.

Summary

So Genesis, the book of beginnings, is all about the creation of the universe also known as the creation of “time, space, and matter.”
Now there are few more things I want us to consider that have maybe confused some concerning this chapter.
So, we will address that now by talking about…

Theistic Evolution

Six Literal Days Of Creation

A theistic evolutionist is simply one that believes God created the universe but that it was done through evolution and not in six literal twenty-four hour days.
Now to be clear, I don’t know anyone that does not believe in micro-evolution or what is also called adaptation.
Evidence for this is obvious where a dog that lives in colder climate will have a thicker coat of hair verse a dog that lives in hot climates.
It should be noted that Charles Darwin, the father of the theory of evolution, noticed “micro-evolution” or adaptation and then worked backwards to his theory of macro-evolution or the changing from one species to the next.
This macro evolution is something the bible does not support no matter how many different ways theistic evolutionist want it to as we will see.
We can know this for two different reasons.
First, God instructed the Israelites to take a Sabbath rest on each seventh day because it was the same day he rested.
Exodus 20:10–11 ESV
10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. 11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
God is obviously talking about a normal seven, twenty-four hour, week.
Second the Hebrew word for “day” which is the “yom” proves this is six literal days, but how can we know this?
Now this word, depending on the context, can mean several different things.
It can mean part of a twenty-four hour day such as in Genesis 8:22.
Genesis 8:22 ESV
22 While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease.
It can also mean an unspecific period of time as seen in Genesis 2:4.
Genesis 2:4 ESV
4 These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens.
Lastly, it can mean a twenty-four hour period of time such as in Genesis 39:10.
Genesis 39:10 ESV
10 And as she spoke to Joseph day after day, he would not listen to her, to lie beside her or to be with her.
Now this word “yom” is found some 2301 times in the bible outside of Genesis 1 and it is found 410 times with a numeral such as…
first day
Genesis 8:13 ESV
13 In the six hundred and first year, in the first month, the first day of the month, the waters were dried from off the earth. And Noah removed the covering of the ark and looked, and behold, the face of the ground was dry.
third day
Genesis 22:4 ESV
4 On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place from afar.
Here is the kicker, every time the word yom, out side of Genesis 1 is found with a number of some sort it always is describing a twenty-four hour period.
Outside of Genesis 1 we find the word “day” or “yom” 38 times with the phrase “evening and morning.”
Every single time we find it, it is talking about a twenty-four hour period of time.
The evidence is overwhelming if we ignore the noise of macro-evolution and see what God actually says about this.
Arthur C. CUstance, a Canadian anthropologist, sent a letter to Hebrew scholars in nine leading universities. He sent them each the same question, “Do you understand the Hebrew word yom, as used in Genesis 1, accompanied by a numerical, to be properly translated as (a) a day as commonly understood, or (b) an age, or (c) an age or day without preference for either?”
Seven of the nine responded and each and everyone of them said “(a) a day as commonly understood.”
Now, what about those other theories that theistic evolutionists like to use such as the…

Day Age & Gap Theory

The “day age” theory states…
That each day could mean thousands of years because of 2 Peter 3:8.
2 Peter 3:8 ESV
8 But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
Now we have already proven what the word day or yom means in Genesis one, which is the same as it means in the rest of the Old Testament.
However, to quickly answer this we have to keep Peter’s inspired words in context.
God, through Peter, isn’t trying to make an argument here against Genesis 1 and that it is six literal days, God already established that as we said. No, Peter is simply assuring those being persecuted, that are being written to, that God will keep his promise and send back Jesus no matter how long his promise takes to complete.
What about the “Gap theory?”
This one has fallen out of favor in the last several years due to it being so easily discredited now-a-days.
This theory suggests that in Genesis 1:1 God created the original universe billions of years ago, but as some point between Genesis 1:1 and Genesis 1:2, Satan and his followers were thrown down from heaven to this earth which caused a great catastrophic event here leaving it “without form and void.”
Of course those that hold to this go to Revelation 12:7-9 as proof of this.
Now, to be clear this was not even in the minds of men until Thomas Chalmers, who lived from 1780 - 1884 AD, came up with it.
Ecclesiastes 1:9 ESV
9 What has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun.
When someone says they “have a new doctrine” you can count on it either not being new or wrong as the Preacher in Ecclesiastes points out several times.
However, lets demonstrate why this doctrine is also false.
It makes an assertion that there is always a difference between the Hebrew word “bara” for creation as found in Genesis 1:1 and the Hebrew word “asah” for “made” as in Genesis 1:25.
It is said that God created (bara) the universe billions of years ago and then “re-made” (asah) it after the fall of Satan.
Now if it is the case that bara and asah are always talking about different things we should never find them being used in the same way or talking about the same thing.
In Psalm 148 we read that God created (bara) all his hosts.
Psalm 148:2 ESV
2 Praise him, all his angels; praise him, all his hosts!
Psalm 148:5 ESV
5 Let them praise the name of the Lord! For he commanded and they were created.
Yet in Nehemiah we read about those same “hosts” but this time it talks about God “making” (asah) them.
Nehemiah 9:6 ESV
6 “You are the Lord, you alone. You have made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them; and you preserve all of them; and the host of heaven worships you.
Even in Genesis 2 we find them being used interchangeably.
Genesis 2:4 ESV
4 These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens.

Summary

It doesn’t matter how you look at it, Genesis 1 is talking about what God created did in six twenty-four days wherein the universe is concerned.

Conclusion

So the book of beginnings, begins with the creation of the universe.
Genesis 1:1 ESV
1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
