For the next few minutes, I invite you to join me as we look to our Great King by opening our hearts to hear from Him through the words of the Bible.

Silence

As we begin, let us remember that God calls His people, young and old, to be still and know that He is God. Let's take a few seconds to calm and quiet our minds, so that we can hear him better.

Opening Prayer‌ Loving Lord, we delight in your counsel. Today, help our hearts be glad as we receive your words. (from Psalm 16:7,9)

Passage

Today our passage is from 1 Timothy 4, verses 7 and 8 (ESV):

 Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.”

Exhortation

We Christians can see what the rest of the world cannot – the future! God has told us that he is coming, that King Jesus will make all things new. His people, people from every tribe, tongue, and nation, will live forever in glory, filled with unending joy, and wonder.

We live according to a story – a happy ever after story – the true story of the whole world! The story God is telling shows us who we are, why we’re here, and how to live. We find ourselves in the story, but even more we find God in the story.

In our passage today, Paul tells a young man named Timothy to avoid other stories, false stories, stories that sound nice, but lie about God and his world. These irreverent, silly myths (as Paul calls them) are designed to confuse us. They take our eyes off of Jesus and the glorious good future he has for us. These false stories will tell you how to live, but not how to live well. They will lead you to death rather than life.

No. Have nothing to do with these false stories! Learn and love the story of the Bible. Practice living the way Jesus wants you to live. Be a good and faithful character in God’s grand story. If we do this, we will not only flourish in this life, but we will be made fit for the glorious age to come.

Father in heaven, you are the great Author of the world. You are the master Storyteller. Give us your Spirit so that we may know and love you through the story of the Bible – story about your Son, our Savior, and his redeeming love for us. We ask this in his name, amen.
