Often in our circumstances we try to interpret who God is through our circumstances. We have things occur in our lives and we ask “what do I learn about God’s character because of this?” We are blessed in our lives so we say “well obviously, God likes the choices I’m making”, we go through challenges and we say “God isn’t happy”, we see suffering in the world and we try and figure out what it tells us about God, someone is elected into office and we try and figure out “What God is doing”. Instead, I think what we should do is know who God is, His character, and through His character we see the circumstances in our lives through the lens of who He has told us that He is. If we switch it we can often get confused about what God is trying to “say” to us, rather than to celebrate who He is no matter what happens in our lives. This hymn teaches us to do that. It teaches us that God is faithful in all circumstances, whether we recognize it or not.
Rather than interpret God through the lens of our circumstances, this psalm calls us to interpret everything through the lens of God’s character.
The common refrain continues “His faithful love endures forever”, this reminds us that through the highs and lows of life that God is still the same.
-This is important, because whether we are going through the rough waters of life, whether everything is great for us, or we are going through the ho-hum of life...who God is doesn’t change.
-Sometimes it can be hard to accept this, we see the issues that we face and we can wonder if God REALLY is the same. It can feel as if somehow He has changed, as if He isn’t who he says He is.
-But the impact of sin is what we are noticing. Sin changes how we interpret our lives.
