A Psalm written to be played with the flutes. Don’t you wish our worship could include trumpets and flutes and stringed instruments an orchestra
A Psalm of David
It was written to the Chief Musician
Three options for who the Chief Musician was
1 Chief Musician - The LORD God (Jehovah Elohim)
Zephaniah 3:17 The Lord your God in your midst, The Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.
If God is the chief musician I like the idea but am not convinced that He is the man that David was talking about a question comes up when does God sing. Obviously God created Lucifer to be a musical instrument and He appears to enjoy and have created music. I have always like the Magician’s nephew. I will need to read that book soon. Where Aslan CS Lewis God Jesus like character sand the world into existance. I always look at the octet rule in Chemistry. Does anyone know what that is all about and how it works like musical notes let’s look at God singing.
Bunny Trail - The LORD sings in the night.
Job 35:10 But no one says, ‘Where is God my Maker, Who gives songs in the night,
Don’t believe me?
Psalm 42:8 The Lord will command His lovingkindness in the daytime, And in the night His song shall be with me— A prayer to the God of my life.
Still not convinced....
Isaiah 30:29 You shall have a song As in the night when a holy festival is kept, And gladness of heart as when one goes with a flute, To come into the mountain of the Lord, To the Mighty One of Israel.
Ok I think I will encourage people who are having troubles sleeping with that truth from now on. That is another good example of what God wants us to do when we can’t sleep. PRay and Bible Meditation in the morning and Godly Songs in the night.
2 Heman the Singer
1 Chronicles 6:33 And these are the ones who ministered with their sons: Of the sons of the Kohathites were Heman the singer, the son of Joel, the son of Samuel,
Ok as a child of the 80 s I was interested to learn this. I just picture Heman Master of the Universe
3 Asaph the Chief Musician
1 Chronicles 16:5–7 Asaph the chief, and next to him Zechariah, then Jeiel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Mattithiah, Eliab, Benaiah, and Obed-Edom: Jeiel with stringed instruments and harps, but Asaph made music with cymbals; Benaiah and Jahaziel the priests regularly blew the trumpets before the ark of the covenant of God. On that day David first delivered this psalm into the hand of Asaph and his brethren, to thank the Lord:
This is probably because He is called the chief makes sense. But I could also see this being for God Himself
LORD LISTEN!!!!
Psalm 5:1–2 Give ear to my words, O Lord, Consider my meditation. Give heed to the voice of my cry, My King and my God, For to You I will pray.
1 Give ear to my words
2 Consider my meditation
3 Give heed to the voice of my cry
3 Times David repeats God listen to me.
3 ways that David reaches out to God
1 Speaks to Him (Daily Prayer)
Philippians 4:6–7 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
As Christians we should have a scheduled time of prayer with God, our daily speak with God. Like Adam and Eve had their scheduled time with God you should have a scheduled appointment with your God
2 Meditates on Him (Bible Study and Being Still)
Psalm 119:15 “I will meditate on Your precepts, And contemplate Your ways.”
Psalm 119:97 “Oh, how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day.”
Psalm 119:148 “My eyes are awake through the night watches, That I may meditate on Your word.”
Oh Boy I always say that the best time to spend your time with the LORD is in the morning. I am not going to change my stance on that, but I am going to not forget about having a relationship with God in the night.
The best option is spend time with God all day long.
Psalm 1:2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night.
3 Cries to Him (Emergency need)
2 Chronicles 20:9 If disaster comes upon us—sword, judgment, pestilence, or famine—we will stand before this temple and in Your presence (for Your name is in this temple), and cry out to You in our affliction, and You will hear and save.’
Who should we pray to?
God obviously YAHWEH David tells us who the YAHWEH is that He is praying to.
1 Yahweh is David’s King.
Psalm 47:7 “For God is the King of all the earth; Sing praises with understanding.”
Jesus is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords
Revelation 19:16 “And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS”
2 Yahweh is David’s God.
Deuteronomy 10:17 “For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality nor takes a bribe.”
David believed that His God was a real, genuine, and superior God.
Psalm 95:3 “For the Lord is the great God, And the great King above all gods.”
We can have the same attitude today. Do people worship other Gods sure?
There are 2.38 Billion Christians in the world
There are 2.05 Billion Muslims in the world who worship Allah
There are 1.1 Billion Hindus in the world who worship their deities
Don’t forget there are other gods besides those
Purposeful morning prayer to heaven.
Psalm 5:3 My voice You shall hear in the morning, O Lord; In the morning I will direct it to You, And I will look up.
David spent his time of prayer in the morning.
Mark 1:35 Now in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight, He went out and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed.
Hudson Taylor famous missionary to China used to get up at 2 in the morning to spend time with LORD because he was too busy during the day. I wouldn’t suggest doing that but get up before everyone else to spend time with God
David had direct prayers.
James 4:2–3 You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.
Make your prayers direct and to the point
David’s prayers were directed to heaven.
Hebrews 4:16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
Don’t be afraid to look to heaven when you pray
God hates evil.
Psalm 5:4–6 For You are not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness, Nor shall evil dwell with You. The boastful shall not stand in Your sight; You hate all workers of iniquity. You shall destroy those who speak falsehood; The Lord abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man.
God takes no pleasure in evil.
Isaiah 63:9–10 In all their affliction He was afflicted, And the Angel of His Presence saved them; In His love and in His pity He redeemed them; And He bore them and carried them All the days of old. But they rebelled and grieved His Holy Spirit; So He turned Himself against them as an enemy, And He fought against them.
God hears us when we are in trouble and does compassionate things. But what about when we act wickedly. Israel is the prime example Egypt and the golden calf
Evil will not dwell with God.
Revelation 22:15 But outside are dogs and sorcerers and sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and whoever loves and practices a lie.
You can not be a sinner and enter heaven
The proud will not even be able to stand in God’s presence.
Proverbs 8:13 The fear of the Lord is to hate evil; Pride and arrogance and the evil way And the perverse mouth I hate.
Revelation 21:8 But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”
When the books are opened the wicked won’t be able to stand in God’s presence
God abhors evil.
Romans 12:9 Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good.
God hates evil you should too.
God will not tolerate the bloodthirsty and the liar.
Genesis 6:5–7 Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. So the Lord said, “I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them.”
Ananias and Sapphira
Acts 5:3–5 But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself? While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God.” Then Ananias, hearing these words, fell down and breathed his last. So great fear came upon all those who heard these things.
As you draw close to God one becomes sensitive to sin.
It’s about reverence, not feeling.
Psalm 5:7 “But as for me, I will come into Your house in the multitude of Your mercy; In fear of You I will worship toward Your holy temple.”
Mercy in the house of God.
Titus 3:5–6 not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior,
People should seek mercy at the church. Find salvation when I think of that word mercy which I always associate with the mercy seat and that leads me to salvation that was paid for on the cross. Jesus shed his blood so we can be saved.
True Worship in the house of God.
John 4:23–24 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”
How do people worship today? Well thats a loaded question there are as many ways to worship as their are churches in the USA but I think a lot of people have the cart before the horse. Worship is about YOU GOING TO GOD! Not what can the preacher and worship team and the programs do for you. People always tell me, we need more youth in this church. I agree! Then I hear we need to not go all honky tonk with our music. Guess what I agree!! I go to church not for music. I don’t care about music. Honky tonk praise southern gospel or classical hymns Just don’t care! I want to worship. Some songs in our hymnal I don’t think are worshipful. I want church to be about sending worship to God,. First and foremost. It should be about what can we do for Him not what does this place do for us. But we live in the land of McDonalds and Burger King so people will walk in taste testing our worship and walk right out the door the next week. OK!!! There problem not ours . Keep praying and ministering for young people
In fear worship the LORD.
Isaiah 6:1–5 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple. Above it stood seraphim; each one had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one cried to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory!” And the posts of the door were shaken by the voice of him who cried out, and the house was filled with smoke. So I said: “Woe is me, for I am undone! Because I am a man of unclean lips, And I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; For my eyes have seen the King, The Lord of hosts.”
Lead me in Your righteousness.
Psalm 5:8 Lead me, O Lord, in Your righteousness because of my enemies; Make Your way straight before my face.
Follow the righteousness of God.
Zephaniah 3:5 The Lord is righteous in her midst, He will do no unrighteousness. Every morning He brings His justice to light; He never fails, But the unjust knows no shame.
Follow the straight and narrow path.
Matthew 7:13–14 “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.
I don’t care if the path is narrow that leads to heaven. I will follow it. If there is only one way show me Lord. The wicked want broad and many ways because they want to do things on their own. There is only one way to heaven.
Think about this what do people want.
To be a billlionaire not going to happen
Be a basketball champion, you are more likely to be a billionaire. WOW!!!
Be a Christian there is only one way and it is free and available to all. Some will never be able to be doctors billionaires or basketball champions but anyone can come to Jesus it is just that there is only one way to heaven
The wicked tongue.
Psalm 5:9 For there is no faithfulness in their mouth; Their inward part is destruction; Their throat is an open tomb; They flatter with their tongue.
The Tongue is not faithful.
Matthew 12:34 Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.
The Tongue is destruction.
The throat is an open tomb, it leads to death.
Flattery will get you no where.
See if you can find all those elements in this passage?
James 3:5–12 Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell. For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and creature of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by mankind. But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so. Does a spring send forth fresh water and bitter from the same opening? Can a fig tree, my brethren, bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Thus no spring yields both salt water and fresh.
Pronounce them Guilty
Psalm 5:10 Pronounce them guilty, O God! Let them fall by their own counsels; Cast them out in the multitude of their transgressions, For they have rebelled against You.
Its God’s job to pronounce them guilty.
Jeremiah 1:16 I will utter My judgments Against them concerning all their wickedness, Because they have forsaken Me, Burned incense to other gods, And worshiped the works of their own hands.
Why?
Listened to their own counsel
Multitude of transgression
Rebelled against God
The righteous are different.
Psalm 5:11 But let all those rejoice who put their trust in You; Let them ever shout for joy, because You defend them; Let those also who love Your name Be joyful in You.
The righteous trust in God.
Proverbs 3:5–6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.
The righteous shout for Joy.
Psalm 100 “A Psalm of Thanksgiving. Make a joyful shout to the Lord, all you lands! Serve the Lord with gladness; Come before His presence with singing. Know that the Lord, He is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; We are His people and the sheep of His pasture. Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, And into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name. For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting, And His truth endures to all generations.”
The righteous are defended by God.
Proverbs 18:10 The name of the Lord is a strong tower; The righteous run to it and are safe.
The righteous love their God.
Deuteronomy 6:4–5 Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.
Grace protects the righteous.
Psalm 5:12 For You, O Lord, will bless the righteous; With favor You will surround him as with a shield.
Those who are with us are greater than the world.
2 Kings 6:16–17 So he answered, “Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” And Elisha prayed, and said, “Lord, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.” Then the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.
Greater is He that is in you.
1 John 4:4 “You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.”
Never forget that God guards His people.
Psalm 23:6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord Forever.
Grace is God’s hedge of protection around us.
Job 1:9–10 So Satan answered the Lord and said, “Does Job fear God for nothing? Have You not made a hedge around him, around his household, and around all that he has on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land.
If God has you Satan can’t touch you.
