Matthew 5:12 CSB
Be glad and rejoice, because your reward is great in heaven. For that is how they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
19 because I know this will lead to my salvation through your prayers and help from the Spirit of Jesus Christ.
Joy is a gift of the Holy Spirit (Gal 5:22), but it is not always constant and full.
What is the only certain cause for loss of joy in a believer’s life?
Sin
Anything other than sin, no matter the difficulty, the pain, the disappointment, need not take away our joy. Those things cause us to question or blame God and fail to have faith…”without faith it is what?” impossible to please God

Spirit of Jesus Christ is the Holy Spirit

Romans 8:2
Romans 8:9 CSB
You, however, are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. If anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to him.
20 My eager expectation and hope is that I will not be ashamed about anything, but that now as always, with all courage, Christ will be highly honored in my body, whether by life or by death.
what a prayer that I want to pray myself. Not ashamed about anything.

παρρησία -ας, ἡ; (parrēsia), N. confidence; boldness; plainly. Hebrew equivalent: ענג (1), קוֹל (1).

Noun Usage

1. boldness — the trait of being

WITH ALL COURAGE
21 For me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.
Put this verse in your own words
What does it mean to be able to say, with all genuineness “for to me, to live is Christ?”
22 Now if I live on in the flesh, this means fruitful work for me; and I don’t know which one I should choose.
23 I am torn between the two. I long to depart and be with Christ—which is far better—
24 but to remain in the flesh is more necessary for your sake.
or hard pressed, like a traveler on a narrow path with rock on each side
what are some specific ways Paul was torn emotionally and spiritually?
more work for Jesus sake and for others, or be with Jesus himself
25 Since I am persuaded of this, I know that I will remain and continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith,
Persuaded, same word as “sure” in v6

Remain and continue WITH

Progress, journey of faith. Follow, walk, step.
not quick, like exercise or running or saving money
Colossians 1:24–29 CSB
Now I rejoice in my sufferings for you, and I am completing in my flesh what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions for his body, that is, the church. I have become its servant, according to God’s commission that was given to me for you, to make the word of God fully known, the mystery hidden for ages and generations but now revealed to his saints. God wanted to make known among the Gentiles the glorious wealth of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. We proclaim him, warning and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone mature in Christ. I labor for this, striving with his strength that works powerfully in me.
In what ways does this passage echo his honest comments in Phil 1:12-26?
26 so that, because of my coming to you again, your boasting in Christ Jesus may abound.
Paul was ready to keep working and laboring for the Phil progress in Christ, until he actually went to be with Jesus
27 Just one thing: As citizens of heaven, live your life worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or am absent, I will hear about you that you are standing firm in one spirit, in one accord, contending together for the faith of the gospel,
Citizens of Rome was a big deal
Citizens of Heaven.
2 Corinthians 5:6–8 CSB
So we are always confident and know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. For we walk by faith, not by sight. In fact, we are confident, and we would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.
Our home is not here
What verb does Paul use in his command to this church? Why is it significant?
What qualities or practices would you consider the most important, non-negotiable in living a life Worthy of Christ?
contenting together
Struggle alongside, like offensive linemen and defensive lineman
What are some specific ways the church can strive together to advance God’s kingdom? what enemies will we face?
28 not being frightened in any way by your opponents. This is a sign of destruction for them, but of your salvation—and this is from God.
For you to live worthy, to stand firm in faith, to contend with other believers in the faith, and to do this and suffer without being scared…you are showing your salvation, that the opponents have no real power and will be destroyed by God.
29 For it has been granted to you on Christ’s behalf not only to believe in him, but also to suffer for him,
Granted to suffer, a grace, which brings power and eternal reward.
How can suffering be a gracious gift?
2 Corinthians 1:5 CSB
For just as the sufferings of Christ overflow to us, so also through Christ our comfort overflows.
1 Peter 4:1 CSB
Therefore, since Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same understanding—because the one who suffers in the flesh is finished with sin—
1 Peter 4:13 CSB
Instead, rejoice as you share in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may also rejoice with great joy when his glory is revealed.
30 since you are engaged in the same struggle that you saw I had and now hear that I have.
They knew and saw that Paul was imprisoned in Philippi Acts 16:19-40
How can you stand firm in your convictions as you face situations this week?
What is the one principle you are taking away from this lesson that will help you become a person of spiritual integrity?
