Father—a name applied
(1) to any ancestor ; and
(2) as a title of respect to a chief, ruler, or elder, etc..
(3) The author or beginner of anything is also so called; e.g., Jabal and Jubal (Gen. 4:2021; comp. Job 38:28).
Applied to God (Ex. 4:22Deut. 32:62 Sam. 7:14Ps. 89:2728, etc.).
(1.) As denoting his covenant relation to the Jews (Jer. 31:9Isa. 63:1664:8John 8:41, etc.).
(2.) Believers are called God’s “sons” (John 1:12Rom. 8:16Matt. 6:48151810:2029). They also call him “Father” (Rom. 1:71 Cor. 1:32 Cor. 1:2Gal. 1:4)
But in these modern times more children have been physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually fatherless. What should the fathers do according to the Bible?

What are the roles of a Father according to the Bible?

Priest of the house
Fathers are called to lead their families in the worship and knowledge of God
Deut. 6:6-7

6 And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am (God) giving you today. 7 Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up.

Fathers are called to lead their families in faith and spiritual growth.
Prov. 22:6

6 Direct your children onto the right path,

and when they are older, they will not leave it.

And there is only one right path to become a good Spiritual leader:
Deut. 6:4-5

4 “Listen, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD alone. 5 And you

Jesus repeated this in Mark:12:30-31 because it is a must… a necessity

29 Jesus replied, “The most important commandment is this: ‘Listen, O Israel! The LORD our God is the one and only LORD. 30 And you

Provider
A father is expected to care for the physical needs of his family… it is his responsibility
1 Tim. 5:8

8 But those who won’t care for their relatives, especially those in their own household, have denied the true faith. Such people are worse than unbelievers.

This includes not only physical provision but also emotional, mental and spiritual care. And these things can’t be bought by money but only through time.

Protector
Fathers are responsible for the safety and well-being of their household.
Security means protecting from harm, danger, or fear—creating a sense of safety and stability. Examples of protective fathers:
Jacob protecting Benjamin - After Joseph became a ruler in Egypt, his brothers came to buy food. Joseph tested them by demanding they bring their youngest brother, Benjamin. Jacob was heartbroken and reluctant to let Benjamin go, fearing he would lose him like he lost Joseph.
Jairus pleeding for his daughter - Jairus, a synagogue leader, fell at Jesus' feet and begged Him to heal his dying daughter.
Mark 5:23: “My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live.”
Joseph protecting Mary and Jesus
Matthew 2:14: “So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt…”
This role is modeled by God’s own protective nature over His people
Psalms 91:1-2

1 Those who live in the shelter of the Most High

will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.

2 This I declare about the LORD:

He alone is my refuge, my place of safety;

he is my God, and I trust him.

Matthew 7:9-11

9 Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? 11 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!

Loving and Compassionate
God is often described as a loving Father, setting the standard for human fathers
Psalm 103:13

13 The LORD is like a father to his children,

tender and compassionate to those who fear him.

there are two kinds of love in the Bible:
love that gives importance to something/someone valuable
love that gives relevance to anything/anyone that has no value
I was watching season 10 episode 19 of NCIS. and there is this part where one of my favorite characters, Special agent Timothy McGee, meerts his Strict Admiral Father. And in other episodes Agent McGee describes his Father as one who never showed him importance or placed him before his career. One time he shared a story: that he made the best birthday card for his dad. and his dad just says: “Surely you can do better”
We certainly can’t pick our Fathers,… But the real tragedy occurs when our fathers do not pick us - Dr. Donald Mallard, Chief Medical Examiner, NCIS, season 10 episode 19
quality time is the best way to show Love. Time is the highest currency in this world.
Fathers, your children will only be children for a while. God has enstrusted them to you until they can decide for their own
“The best thing to spend on your children is your time.” – Louise Hart.
“The best use of life is love. The best expression of love is time. The best time to love is now.”– Rick Warren
“The greatest gift you can give someone is your time because when you give your time, you are giving a portion of your life that you will never get back.”– Rick Warren
Disciplinarian
We are born in an immoral world… e.g. lying comes naturally to a child but living in the truth must be taught
Psalms 51:5

5 For I was born a sinner—

yes, from the moment my mother conceived me.

The first step to Discipline is Forgiveness. Fathers need to learn how to fully forgive
Matthew 6:14-15

14 “If you forgive those who sin against you, your heavenly Father will forgive you. 15 But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins.

Fathers are called to correct and discipline their children in love and Patience.
Prov. 15:18

18  A hot-tempered man stirs up strife,

but he who is slow to anger quiets contention.

Eph. 6:4

4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger by the way you treat them. Rather, bring them up with the discipline and instruction that comes from the Lord.

Proverbs 3:11-12

11 My child, don’t reject the LORD’s discipline,

and don’t be upset when he corrects you.

12 For the LORD corrects those he loves,

just as a father corrects a child in whom he delights.

Prov. 4:1-3

1 My children, listen when your father corrects you.

Pay attention and learn good judgment,

2 for I am giving you good guidance.

Don’t turn away from my instructions.

3 For I, too, was once my father’s son,

tenderly loved as my mother’s only child.

Heb. 12:7-8

7 As you endure this divine discipline, remember that God is treating you as his own children. Who ever heard of a child who is never disciplined by its father? 8 If God doesn’t discipline you as he does all of his children, it means that you are illegitimate and are not really his children at all.

Teacher (Examples of Integrity and Godliness)
Fathers teach life lessons, values, and wisdom. The Proverbs are full of life lessons
Prov. 1:8-9

8 My child, listen when your father corrects you.

Don’t neglect your mother’s instruction.

9 What you learn from them will crown you with grace

and be a chain of honor around your neck.

Prov. 4:4-5

4 My father taught me,

“Take my words to heart.

Follow my commands, and you will live.

5 Get wisdom; develop good judgment.

Don’t forget my words or turn away from them.

Prov. 3:1-2

1 My child, never forget the things I have taught you.

Store my commands in your heart.

2 If you do this, you will live many years,

and your life will be satisfying.

A true father always loves to see their offspring succeed in life… That is their joy
Proverbs 10:1

A wise child brings joy to a father;

a foolish child brings grief to a mother.

Loving Husband
Being a Father is different role from being a husband. But no one can be a father before learning to be a commited and loving husband
Eph. 5:28-29

28 In the same way, husbands ought to love their wives as they love their own bodies. For a man who loves his wife actually shows love for himself. 29 No one hates his own body but feeds and cares for it, just as Christ cares for the church

“Intimacy is not something freely given. It requires your attention, willingness, and intentional effort.” - Gillian Florence Sanger
Luke 3:22

22 and the Holy Spirit, in bodily form, descended on him like a dove. And a voice from heaven said, “You are my dearly loved Son, and you bring me great joy.”

And if we read verses 23-38, it shows the ancestry of Jesus and it ends with “Adam was the son of God.” v38
And in chapter 4 God the Father leads him to temptation. And Jesus did not disappoint His Father. In all his life here on earth, he never sinned.
In contrary, all of us are born sinners according to Romans 3:23

23 For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.

and Psalm 51:5

5 For I was born a sinner—

yes, from the moment my mother conceived me.

But Romans 3:24 says

24 Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins

This is the Love of a Father. Just like the Forgiving Father, He celebrates when we turn back from our old sinful ways and humbly ran back to him
Luke 15:22-24

22 But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet. 23 And bring the fattened calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate. 24 For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.’ And they began to celebrate.

Luke 15:10

’ 10 Just so, I tell you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”
