ice breaker —- what would you write on your tombstone —- He loved Jesus

title - Biblical fatherhood

q. did you know that the word father shows up 102 times in the book of matthew
the word father is translated from the greek word pater
jesus spoke mostly aramaic and when He said father it was pronounced abba
it is the literal meaning of dad or father
as I was reading all of the passages throughout
matthew that had father in it
I realized just how perfect of a relationship Jesus had with His father
they are the perfect example for relationship
and we must know that this is the relationship that we
are supposed to have with God
the only problem is that we are sinful
and our fathers are sinful too
now I didnt have a good relationship with my father
and maybe thats the same for you
so a day like this can be hard
I want to share a verse that helped me this
Psalm 68:4–5 ESV
Sing to God, sing praises to his name; lift up a song to him who rides through the deserts; his name is the Lord; exult before him! Father of the fatherless and protector of widows is God in his holy habitation.
If your dad is not there for you
let this sermon teach you how to be a better father than him
and let these verses remind you that you have a father in heaven
that loves you
and if your dad passed away
let this sermon bring praises for his life and impact in your life
now let me ask you
have you ever take your dad for granted
have you ever stopped and thought
my dad is a beast
he has done so much for our family
and I want to honor him
—-someone tell me story about your dad being a beast …
today I want us to be able to hone in on this major theme
the theme of father
and the importance of this relationship
and what fatherhood means biblically
so First lets look at Biblical father hood
as pertains to men
who are made in the image of God

Fathers are the shepards of the home

this is a point that needs a lot of attention
we will draw from
Ephesians 5:23–24 ESV
For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.
there is a biblical heiarchy ‘
God the father is over God the son
q. Is God the father more iportant or valubale than God the son?
The son is over the husband ,
the husband is over the wife ‘
the parents are over the children
q. Is the husband more valubale than the wife ?
no
illistration -
jessica is smarter than me
Jessica is better looking than me
jessica is funnier than me
but I am responsibl to God for how my family is doing
and one of the saddest things is that in
the church , often times women are the spiritual heads of the house
because the men are not willing to pursue God
this is not how the Lord intended things
He intended for strong and faithful men
to lead strong and faithful women
to produce strong and faithful children
now if your sitting here
and your parents are not leading you
and your father is far from God
dont let that keep you from pursuing Him
as the child, you may end up being the spiritual leader in your home
I remember when I got saved at 24
I led my momand brother into a deeper relationship with God
but my step dad remained far from Him
do you know how hard that was on my mom to have a weak spiritual fatherin the home
however there is still a heirarchy of leadership
the man is responsible for leading his family
therefore the pressure is the dad
He is responsible for the family being provided for and protected
seems like a picture of our heavenly father doesnt it
Men - one day you will father a home
women- one day you will submit under the leadership of a husband
wait for the right one….
test - is he commited to a local church ?
does he have sound theology ..
does he read his bible…
does he have a job ———we dont want scrubs
and does he love you like a queen….
Proverbs 1:7 ESV
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.
make sure that you are looking at a man that fears God
and you will find yourself father after Gods heart
now as a father and shepard of the home
you have a few responsibilities thare paramount

spiritually lead your children

your the leader and
you need to teach your kids
one of the greatest needs in the church
is the pastor at the dinner table
Deuteronomy 6:6–7 ESV
And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.
fathers must know the commands of God
and teach the commands of God
there is a responsibility on the father to teach the family about God
and there is zero excuse for this
if your dad is not doing this
I would be willing to train him in order to do this
there is a comittment needed to
teach your kids
not perfectly
Q.who has a father that teaches them the bible at home?
consider yourself blessed
because I never had that
some of you dont have that and you have to overcome all the odds
and I am here to tell you that you can
but you have to put time into the study to make up for it…
story- I was praying with bradley
we started talking about being a soldier for God
and then he was asking if he could get a sword
and then we talked about heaven
and then he asked , who is going to take care of our house if were in heaven
—-he doesnt get everything yet but were having the conversations
there is a huge responsibility for me to teach him
Proverbs 22:6 “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.”
not a promise but this is a general truth
as a father you need to be putting in this effort
it is also the job of fathers to train and discipline children
q. did you know its biblical to spank your kids
story —- told uncle I had to spank bradley and he was mortified
he threatened to call dcfs
Proverbs 22:6 ESV
Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.
Proverbs 13:24 ESV
Whoever spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him.
fathers are responsible for disciplining and traing kids
q have you ever seen a kid being a total brat …
im not talking a toddler but a kid your age …
its crazy
ands its because their fathers didnt father biblically
now you cant abuse your kids and beat them ‘
but you will know
a pop on the butt with a spoon will teach your kids
taking away phones and grounding will teach your kids
to fear their parents in a similar way that we are to fear the Lord
for biblical fatherhood demands respect

father with integrity and demand respect

as fathers you will need to establish spiritual leadership and respect in the home
as children you must must must honor your father
Exodus 20:12 ESV
“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.
honor has more than obedience attached to it
its your inner attitude towards your parents
and I ask today
how is your inner attitude towards your parents
is it an attitude of greatfulness
is it an attitude of love
do you regard your father highly?
it is a crying shame to see children disrespect their parents
and im not going to sugar coat it
if your constantly disrespecting your parents
you are showing you dont love them
to disrespect is the absence of love
and it is very serious in the eyes of God
disrespect of your parents has no place in GODS kingdom
and it required the death penalty under the old testemant
this wasnt for having a meltdown
but for serious acts of rebellion against parents, mainly at a higher age
now
do you think it is still serious in Gods eyes today
yes
if you have been rebellious to your parents ‘
GOD WILL FORGIVE YOU
go and apalogize to your parents ‘
pray and ask God for forgivness
and make it a priorrity to obey your parents
now we have established
biblical father hood
must shepard their homes
lead the family in a spiritual manner
and to raise up the children in respect and honor
these are some of the basics of biblical father hood
something you can understand
for your future in fatherhood and your decision making in a spouse
these are things you can appreciate in your own father
and things you can talk with your dad about if they are lacking
but in closing I want to bring your attention to a better father
and that is God Himself
your dads are human and their going to fail
some of your dads may be so far from biblical fatherhood
and
when you become a dad your going to fall short in many ways
this is when you need to remember

we all have a perfect father in heaven

when you put your faith in Christ
you were given a perfect father
Jesus eliminated your sin by taking the penalty for you on the cross
and has given you reconciliation
with your father in heaven
your father in heaven is more of a father to you
than your father on earth
Matthew 6:26 “Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?”
this passage is all you need to know
that you have a heavenly father
and he loves you perfectly
if your earthly father has failed
your heavenly father wont
if your earthly father is gone
your heavenly father is close
the earthly father is meant to be an extension of our father in heaven
the call to shepard the home is originated with God
the call on fathers to spiritually raise up the household
and discipline the children is originated with God
dear friends
stay in close relationship with your heavenly father
and I promise
you will be a biblical father yourself
stay in close relationship with your heavenly father
and you will know what to look for in a husband
and when you go to be with your dads today
tel them how thankful you are
for what they have done
to show you who God is
I want to close by reading psalm 23
and I want you to think of Our God as being
the perfect father
