20 Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?
21 Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?
9 “What sorrow awaits those who argue with their Creator. Does a clay pot argue with its maker? Does the clay dispute with the one who shapes it, saying, ‘Stop, you’re doing it wrong!’ Does the pot exclaim, ‘How clumsy can you be?’
In our last session on May 25th we started this series on Rules You Can’t Rewrite.
The Creator (origin),
The Owner (authority),
The Judge (standard),
The Wise One (reason),
and The King (sovereignty).
Title: Rules You Can’t Rewrite: The Rule of God’s Authority
Rule of God’s Authority we will learn that He is the King of Kings, the Authority of all authority - HE IS SOVEREIGN!
Let’s start by defining the word sovereign.
Two Latin root words:
Sover = above, over, high
We get our words superior and supernatural form this word
eign = denotes belonging or relationship to something.
So the word sovereign means belonging to that which is above, over or highest.
So having defined sovereign I want to start by saying that God is Sovereign!
He is not your co-pilot, no matter what the bumper sticker says…
He is not our partner, friend, his is more than our savior, councilor, provider…
He is our sovereign God!
What does that mean?
God is above of it all!
The definer of it all!
The created can not redefine its self!
16 How foolish can you be? He is the Potter, and he is certainly greater than you, the clay! Should the created thing say of the one who made it, “He didn’t make me”? Does a jar ever say, “The potter who made me is stupid”?
1 The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying,
2 Arise, and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will cause thee to hear my words.
3 Then I went down to the potter’s house, and, behold, he wrought a work on the wheels.
4 And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.
5 Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying,
6 O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the Lord. Behold, as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel.
My life belongs to God!
4 He is the Rock, his work is perfect: For all his ways are judgment: A God of truth and without iniquity, Just and right is he.
10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
To argue and debate with God is to forget who you are!
Remember: God does not require perfection, he requires surrender!
Why?! Why does God has so much authority over me? What gives him the right?
Authority comes from OWNERSHIP!
1 The earth is the Lord’s, and the fulness thereof; The world, and they that dwell therein.
Ownership = rights!
Look at this passage…
5 Now if you will obey me and keep my covenant, you will be my own special treasure from among all the peoples on earth; for all the earth belongs to me.
Obey = God’s special people!
16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
He is not just our redeemer, He is our creator, sustainer - he is our all-in-all!
My breath is his!
My life is on loan from him!
Society has lost all sight of this!
My body, my choice!
Which is why they can murder babies in the womb and not even think twice about it because they have rejected their creator!
19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.
Mankind's most base response is to reject God’s sovereignty!
Rejection of God’s authority is first sin!
Lucifer rebelled before man was created…
13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:
14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.
Adam and Eve
1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:
3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.
4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:
5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
Rebellion continued in every generation!
1 One day Korah son of Izhar, a descendant of Kohath son of Levi, conspired with Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On son of Peleth, from the tribe of Reuben.
2 They incited a rebellion against Moses, along with 250 other leaders of the community, all prominent members of the assembly.
3 They united against Moses and Aaron and said, “You have gone too far! The whole community of Israel has been set apart by the Lord, and he is with all of us. What right do you have to act as though you are greater than the rest of the Lord’s people?”
Rebellion is not about the rules but the RULER!
Conclusion:
Peace can only come through total surrender!
Obedience is not about total control or restriction but it is the open door to rest!
28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
Our nation is in rebellion… according to 1 Sam. 15.23 is the sin of witchcraft.
No wonder our nation seems to be bewitched!
