Talk about it.
This is true obedience. They are going to share the Gospel in a place that is so dangerous, they have to keep their identities hidden. This was a powerful part of the SBC Convention. To see all those people who are answering God’s call to go and tell the nations! They are leaving everything behind to go! I am not saying that everyone should join the IMB and go to a foreign country. But I think that we are all to comfortable in our lives here. Jesus didn’t die so that we can just be comfortable. We need to be like these people and get out of our comfort zone and tell the people here in Duncan and Comanche about Jesus! Going includes our communities, not just foreign countries.
Beth and I want to thank you for sending us to the SBC Convention. I was an amazing time! To be in a room with over 10,000 like minded people, worshipping our God, celebrating all that He has done, and doing His business, it was energizing!
We voted on several items, and some of them were passionately debated! We celebrated the CP turning 100! In those 100 years, over $20 Billion have been given! That is amazing.
We also celebrated the BF&M turning 100 also. Back in the early 1920’s, there was starting to be a lot of division between people about our theology. So the SBC created the Baptist Faith and Message in 1925. It keeps us from drifting from clear biblical theology!
It was said several times that if the SBC was a train, the rails that we run on are the CP and the BF&M.
At the Convention, there were 10,599 registered messengers and around 6,000 guests. It was such a great time, tiring, but great.
Thank you again for sending us to the Convention.
Today we are going to be in Mark 12:35-37.
Last week we saw the scribes give it a go at asking Jesus a question. They asked what was the greatest commandment? Hoping to have Jesus reveal some unorthodox and unilateral beliefs. Jesus not only answered the question, He gave them the second greatest also! First, Jesus told them that above all commandments is to know who God is! He quoted the first line of the Shema to them. Hear O Isreal! The Lord our God is one Lord. You can’t love what you don’t know. We have to know who the Bible says God is, what it reveals about Him. The only way we can love God the way He commands us too, is if we truly know Him. Then He answered their question, He told them that the greatest is to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. Second is to love your neighbor as yourself! With these 2 answers, Jesus covered all the 10 commandments! To love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, covers the first 4 commandments. To love your neighbor as yourself, that covers the last 6! We have to put ourselves last to be able to love this way. Sacrificial love is the only love that will satisfy God. We have to love Him and everyone else without expecting anything in return. Our obedience to our God is shown in how we love Him and one another!
Today we are going to look at Jesus getting to ask a question of His own. No one wants to ask Him anymore questions after He answered all the questions from the religious leaders. Jesus is going to ask a question about who He is. The answer to this question is vital to our belief and faith. Let’s take a look!
Please stand as we read God’s Word
Mark 12:35–37 ESV
35 And as Jesus taught in the temple, he said, “How can the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David? 36 David himself, in the Holy Spirit, declared, “ ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet.” ’ 37 David himself calls him Lord. So how is he his son?” And the great throng heard him gladly.
Jesus is still in the temple and this is still the same day. This is the day after He cleared the temple. He had just finished answering all the questions and now it is His turn to ask a question.
His question reveals their true ignorance of the Scriptures and what they say about the Messiah! All the religious leaders including the scribes thought that the Messiah was going to be just a man. They were looking for a King to rule now and bring back the glory days of when David and Solomon were King. They were concerned about being saved from their sins, they thought that their sacrifices did that. They were looking for a man to lead them and free them from Roman rule. They had no idea of their greatest need, a savior, not a earthly king.
Jesus asks how can the scribes say that the Messiah is the son of David? The son of David is the common messianic title that the scribes used when teaching about the Messiah. This is why they thought that He was going to be no more than a man that would rule the kingdom and free them from Roman and all oppression.
Jesus is using the Old Testament to show them their ignorance of what the Old Testament truly teaches. Jesus quoted from Psalm 110:1
Psalm 110:1 ESV
1 The Lord says to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.”
Jesus said that David wrote this, in the Holy Spirit. David didn’t take down dictation from the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit used David and his personality to write and convey what He wanted. We learned about this in our Wednesday night study of the Baptist Faith and Message when we looked at the Scriptures. This is called the verbal plenary theory - every word of the Bible is fully inspired. God used David to write about His Son. David said that the Lord said to my Lord.
There are 2 Lords here in this sentence. Who are they? We know that the Lord is God, so God said to David’s Lord. Who is David’s Lord? It certainly can’t be one of his son’s. No Jewish man from that time would have ever called one of his son’s Lord. That would have been unheard of. So who is this last Lord? If we look farther down in Psalm 110:1, we see that God tells the Lord to sit at His right hand. To sit at the right hand of God is the highest honor available, and it is reserved for only one person! Jesus Christ is who sits at the right hand of God! Mark 16:19
Mark 16:19 ESV
19 So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God.
There is no one else who is at the right hand of God!
If David is calling Him Lord, how can He be his son, how do you make sense of this? This is Jesus’ question and no one can answer it. If the Messiah is truly a son or descendent of David, David would never have called Him Lord! Ever! For David to call Him Lord, meant that He was much more than just a descendent of David, more than just a man, He was the Son of God!
With this quote from Psalm110, Jesus is telling them that the Messiah is more that just he son of David, He is the Son of God!
Jesus was proclaiming the Messiah’s deity and thus His own! He was telling them that He is the one that they have been waiting for, standing right in from of them!
Finally, it says that they crowd enjoyed listening to Him. They were entertained by Jesus. Jesus was fun to listen to and to watch teach. If that is all you every get out of Jesus, you will never be in the Kingdom. You will be like that scribe who is close to the kingdom.
You were close is, not in. The only way to salvation is if you are in the kingdom. To be in, you have to recognize that Jesus is the Son of God who came to die for our sins and was raised on the third day and is at the right hand of God right now. That is how you get in, not by being entertained by Him.
I want to focus on all the questions that Jesus answered and the question that He asked today. In all of these, Jesus used the Bible to answer them all. This is significant! The Bible is our truth! It is our guide and it reveals who God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit to us. The whole Bible points to Jesus Christ the Messiah, the Son of God. There is no part of the Bible that doesn’t. We have to realize this when we are reading the Bible. We have to read it with Jesus in mind and to look for Him as we read.
We have to know the whole Bible so that when we are confronted like Jesus was, we too will be able to answer with Scripture.
Is everyone familiar with a sundial? I know no one here has used one, well maybe Cecil has! The sundial is an ancient time keeper. The first clock if you will. You have a stick in the middle of a circle and numbers around the circle. The sunlight casts a shadow from the stick on a number and you know what time it is. If it is cloudy, all you have is a circle with a stick in it. No shadow and no time. It only works if the Son is out and shining on it.
The Bible is the same way, without the Son, the Bible is just a bunch of books that tell interesting stories to entertain us. We have to have the Son in mind as we read and study the Bible. That is the only way we will see the truth of Him in it and be able to answer when we are confronted by others about our belief.
If it is good enough for Jesus, it is definitely good enough for us. After all, we are supposed to be becoming more and more like Him every day. We must be able to answer questions with the Bible like Jesus did.
Also we must know who Jesus truly is!
He was not just a good man.
He was not just a great teacher.
He was not just an entertaining speaker.
Jesus Christ is the Messiah, the Son of God!
He left heaven, and was born of a virgin. He lived a sinless life and was beaten, murdered on the cross. He rose on the 3rd day and sits at the right hand of God today!!!!!
It is through Him and Him alone that salvation comes. He is THE way, THE truth, and THE life. We can not get any of this wrong. This is the foundation on which salvation comes to us.
Just like we can’t love God if we don’t know who He is! We can’t have salvation and be in the kingdom if we don’t know who Jesus is. Through knowing Him and believing in who He is and what He did, that is how we become sons and daughters of God! That is how we get in and not just close. When we truly know Him, we will be changed forever. We become a new creation! Our old self dies and He gives us a new life, alive in Him. We can finally begin to love the way that He and God loved us, sacrificially! We can truly love one another. Because of Jesus, we can all have fellowship with brothers and sisters that normally we would not be friends with! Without Jesus in me, none of you would probably like me! Without Him, I am selfish, prideful and conceited. Without Jesus I am not a very loveable person. Through Jesus, we have a love that is foreign to the world. They do not and can not understand why and how we love each other so much. We have to show that love to them, so that they can know the Messiah also! We may not be called to go to a foreign country, but we are called to go to Stephens County! Let’s go and let His name and love be known! I love you guys, I am pumped up!!! Let’s go. Let’s pray first!
