Welcome to Vertical Church
42 And they were continually devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to the prayers.
We began our church with the desire to fulfill the mandate of this verse. To devote ourselves to what the early church was devoted to.
Devoted to the teaching of the word of God
Devoted to genuine Christian relationships and the fulfilling of commandment of Christ to love the household of faith
Devoted to the proclamation of the gospel through the ordinances of believers baptism and communion
Devoted to the prayers through singing and public prayer
The 5 Solas - God alone is our source of Salvation
We believe Scripture alone is the Word of God
We believe that we are saved by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone.
WE believe that live and exist for the glory of God alone
We are called Vertical Church - we believe that all true worship and living is Vertical, God directed and God focused
With that in mind, Let us worship God
Call to Worship - Psalm 67:1-7
1 God be gracious to us and bless us, And cause His face to shine upon us— Selah. 2 That Your way may be known on the earth, Your salvation among all nations. 3 Let the peoples praise You, O God; Let all the peoples praise You. 4 Let the nations be glad and sing for joy; For You will judge the peoples with uprightness And lead the nations on the earth. Selah. 5 Let the peoples praise You, O God; Let all the peoples praise You. 6 The earth has yielded its produce; God, our God, blesses us. 7 God blesses us, That all the ends of the earth may fear Him.
Scripture Reading - John 14:16-17, 25-27
16 “And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate, that He may be with you forever; 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him. You know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.
25 “These things I have spoken to you while abiding with you. 26 “But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you. 27 “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.
Introduction: The Day of Pentecost - Jesus Fulfills His Promise
Events in the Life of Jesus that we celebrate
Christmas, Easter, the Ascension
So, what is Pentecost?
How many times was Jesus born, risen, ascended?
More important, how many times did Pentecost take place? Once.
The Day of Pentecost is a one time event in the life of the church
This morning we want to focus on three truths concerning the Day of Pentecost:
Pentecost was a one time event when the Church was empowered (we’ll explain that), Jesus fulfilled His promise (we’ll explain that), and the Spirit was given (we’ll explain that)
But before we do this, let’s discuss an important principle for studying the Bible:
So many verses about Pentecost. So much confusion about Pentecost. Part of the problem can be explained with the children's classic, Where's Waldo? But instead of searching for Waldo our culture wants to search the Bible saying, Where Am I? We want every part of the Bible to apply to me in the Old Testament, to me in the New Testament, to me everywhere. And if you've read this far you've probably figured out that the Day of Pentecost isn't about YOU and you're possibly thinking that it's about the Holy Spirit. But if the Book of Acts was a children's book, I would want you to give it the title, Where's Jesus?
(1) The Day of Pentecost : the Church was empowered
8 but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the end of the earth.”
Power for salvation, power for holy living, power for ministry and spiritual warfare
46 and He said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ would suffer and rise again from the dead the third day, 47 and that repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48 “You are witnesses of these things. 49 “And behold, I am sending the promise of My Father upon you, but you are to stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”
Pentecost: all believers have the power of the Spirit that we might share the gospel, the good news of Jesus’ suffering and resurrection, and the offer of forgiveness through faith in Jesus
(2) The Day of Pentecost: Jesus fulfilled His promise
38 “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’” 39 But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were going to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
16 “And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate, that He may be with you forever; 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him. You know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.
Jesus fulfilled His promise of asking the Father and the gave the Holy Spirit
(3) The Day of Pentecost: the Spirit was given
16 “And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate, that He may be with you forever; 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him. You know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.
Jesus fulfilled His promise of asking the Father and the gave the Holy Spirit -
Jesus is the first advocate, the Spirit is our forever advocate, our forever comforter, our forever helper, our forever comanion
Only those in Christ have the Spirit - He abides with you and is in us
If you were to look at Peter’s speech in Acts 2
The gospel is for all the world
7 So they were astounded and marveling, saying, “Behold, are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 “And how is it that we each hear them in our own language in which we were born? 9 “Parthians and Medes and Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the district of Libya around Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretans and Arabs—we hear them in our own tongues speaking of the mighty deeds of God.”
Jews and Arabs
The Spirit has come for all people
17 ‘And it shall be in the last days,’ God says, ‘That I will pour out My Spirit on all mankind; And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, And your young men shall see visions, And your old men shall dream dreams; 18 Even on My male slaves and female slaves, I will in those days pour out My spirit And they shall prophesy.
Jesus is the focus of Pentecost
22 “Men of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs which God did through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know— 23 this Man, delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the hands of lawless men and put Him to death. 24 “But God raised Him up again, putting an end to the agony of death, since it was impossible for Him to be held in its power.
Peter’s message at Pentecost was not the Holy Spirit but why the Holy Spirit was given
It’s all about Jesus
Come to Jesus, share Jesus, live until the return of Jesus
The Father who chose you, the Son who bought you, and the Spirit who teaches you, make goodness and mercy pursue you all the days of your life and preserve your life, though you walk in the midst of trouble. Amen.
