Title of the Message this Morning is:
Breaking Chains
Juneteenth and the Biblical Call to Freedom
Main idea:
Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States.
This sermon explores how the Biblical call to freedom resonates with the story of Juneteenth.
This message, "Breaking Chains: Juneteenth and the Biblical Call to Freedom" will address three key points:
First, we will look at the Biblical cry for freedom, as seen in the story of the Israelites' exodus from Egypt.
Second, we will examine the role of faith in the journey toward liberation, drawing parallels with the faith of those who awaited emancipation.
Finally, we will discuss our call to be agents of freedom, inspired by the teachings of Jesus and the ongoing work of justice in our world today.
Prayer:
“Lord help us to be the agents of freedom that you’ve called us to be.
Help us to work on behalf of those who cannot work things out themselves.
The oppressed, the orphan, the widow, the enslaved…
Give us eyes to see as you see and ears to hear as you hear and a heart that beats like yours.”
Scripture: Exodus 3:7-10, Isaiah 61:1, Galatians 5:1
(All scripture is taken from the NIV unless otherwise noted)
Introduction
Introduction
Good morning, church!
Today, we gather not only to worship but also to reflect on a significant moment in history: Juneteenth.
This day commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States.
As we consider this topic, we will explore how the Biblical call to freedom resonates with the story of Juneteenth and inspires all of us to continue what God has called us to…
Breaking Chains: Juneteenth and the Biblical Call to Freedom is a reminder that we are to work on behalf of those who cannot work things out themselves;
The oppressed, the orphan, the widow, the enslaved…
God hears their cries and calls us to act on their behalf.
Throughout this sermon, we will address three key points.

Main Teaching
Pastor -
I have three points this morning concerning our subject matter.
Point 1: The Cry for Freedom in the Bible
Point 1: The Cry for Freedom in the Bible
Scripture: Exodus 3:7-10
"The Lord said, 'I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering. So I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey...'"
Explanation:
Just as God heard the cries of the Israelites in bondage, He hears the cries of all who suffer under oppression.
The story of the Exodus is one of the most powerful narratives of liberation in the Bible.
It reminds us that God is not indifferent to the plight of the oppressed.
Juneteenth echoes this Biblical cry for freedom.
On June 19, 1865, the enslaved African Americans in Texas finally received the news of their emancipation, a full two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.
Their cries for freedom were finally answered, much like the Israelites' cries in Egypt.
Point 2: The Role of Faith in Liberation
Point 2: The Role of Faith in Liberation
Scripture: Isaiah 61:1
"The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners..."
Explanation:
Jesus Himself quoted this passage in Luke 4:18-19, declaring His mission to bring freedom and healing.
This mission is central to the Gospel message: liberation from sin, injustice, and all forms of bondage.
Faith played a crucial role in the lives of those who awaited emancipation.
Spirituals, prayers, and the unwavering belief in God's justice sustained the enslaved people.
They drew strength from the Biblical promise of liberation, believing that God would one day set them free.
Point 3: The Call to Be Agents of Freedom
Point 3: The Call to Be Agents of Freedom
Scripture: Galatians 5:1
"It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery."
Explanation:
As followers of Christ, we are called to uphold and advocate for freedom and justice.
Christ has set us free, and in turn, we are to work towards the liberation of others—whether from physical, spiritual, or systemic bondage.
Juneteenth reminds us that the struggle for freedom and justice is on going.
We are called to be vigilant and active in combating modern forms of slavery, racism, and oppression.
Our faith compels us to break chains and proclaim liberty to the captives.
In faithful response to these points here are 3 more specific things that we can do as individuals and as a church;
Point 1: Pray and Advocate for the Oppressed
Exodus 3:7-8: "The Lord said, 'I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering. So I have come down to rescue them...'"
Proverbs 31:8-9: "Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy."
Action:
Commit to daily prayer for those who are oppressed and marginalized in our society.
Use your voice to advocate for justice and equality, speaking out against injustice in your community and beyond.
Point 2: Engage in Acts of Compassion and Service
Scripture References:
Isaiah 61:1: "The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners..."
Matthew 25:35-36: "For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me."
Action:
Participate in community service projects that support those in need, such as food drives, clothing donations, and visiting those in prison or hospitals.
Seek out opportunities to show compassion and care in your everyday interactions, embodying the love and mercy of Christ.
Point 3: Stand Firm in Faith and Promote Freedom
Scripture References:
Galatians 5:1: "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery."
Micah 6:8: "He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God."
Action:
Stand firm in your faith, rejecting any form of bondage or oppression, and encourage others to do the same.
Promote freedom and justice by engaging in educational efforts, supporting policies that protect human rights, and fostering inclusive environments in your church and community.
Conclusion
Conclusion
As we reflect on Juneteenth and the Biblical call to freedom, let us remember that God is a God of liberation.
He hears the cries of the oppressed, empowers us through faith, and calls us to be agents of freedom in the world.
He calls us to action - to be compassionate in our action -
To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly…
As the scripture says in 1 John 3:18, “Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.”
Let us pray for the strength and courage to continue this work, inspired by the stories of the Israelites, the emancipated slaves, and most importantly, the example of our Lord Jesus Christ.
May we honor Juneteenth by committing ourselves to the on going work of justice and liberation, breaking chains in His name.

For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
If you’d would like to receive Jesus today, please pray this prayer with all of us:
Lord I believe that Jesus is the Son of God, and that He died On the cross for my sins and His resurrection from the dead gives me eternal life. I ask forgiveness of my sins, and I accept Jesus as my Lord and Savior. Amen.
