1 Kings 4:30–31 (ESV) so that
Solomon’s wisdom surpassed the
wisdom of all the people of the east
31
and all the wisdom of Egypt. For he
was wiser than all other men, wiser
than Ethan the Ezrahite, and Heman,
Calcol, and Darda, the sons of Mahol,
and his fame was in all the
surrounding nations.
Proverbs 16:7 (ESV) When a man’s
ways please the LORD, He makes even
his enemies to be at peace with him.
Kings 11:14 (ESV) And the LORD
raised up an adversary against
Solomon, Hadad the Edomite. He
was of the royal house in Edom.
fl
1 Kings 11:23, 25 (ESV) God also raised
up as an adversary to him, Rezon the
son of Eliada, who had ed from his
25
master Hadadezer king of Zobah. He
was an adversary of Israel all the days
of Solomon, doing harm as Hadad did.
And he loathed Israel and reigned over
Syria.
1 Kings 11:26 (ESV) Jeroboam the
son of Nebat, an Ephraimite of
Zeredah, a servant of Solomon,
whose mother’s name was Zeruah,
a widow, also lifted up his hand
against the king.
Proverbs 2:3–4 (ESV) yes, if you call
out for insight and raise your voice for
4
understanding, if you seek it [wisdom]
like silver and search for it [wisdom] as
for hidden treasures,
Proverbs 2:6 (ESV) For the LORD gives
wisdom; from his mouth come
knowledge and understanding;
Proverbs 2:10 (ESV) for wisdom will
come into your heart, and knowledge
will be pleasant to your soul;
2 Chronicles 1:10 (ESV) Give me now
wisdom and knowledge to go out and
come in before this people, for who
can govern this people of yours, which
is so great?”
2 Chronicles 1:12a (ESV) wisdom and
knowledge are granted [lit. given] to
you.
Proverbs 22:4 (ESV) The reward
for humility and fear of the LORD
is riches and honor and life.
1 Kings 3:5–14 (ESV) At Gibeon the LORD
appeared to Solomon in a dream by night,
and God said, “Ask what I shall give you.”
6And Solomon said, . . . 7And now, O LORD
my God, you have made your servant king
in place of David my father, although I am
but a little child. I do not know how to go
out or come in.
1 Kings 3:9 (ESV) Give your servant
therefore an understanding mind to
govern your people, that I may discern
between good and evil, for who is
able to govern this your great
people?”
1 Kings 3:12b-14 Behold, I give you a wise
and discerning mind, so that none like you
has been before you and none like you shall
13
arise after you. I give you also what you
have not asked, both riches and honor, so
that no other king shall compare with you, all
14
your days. And if you will walk in my ways,
keeping my statutes and my commandments,
as your father David walked, then I will
lengthen your days.”
Proverbs 2:16–19 (ESV) So you will be
delivered from the forbidden [lit. strange]
woman, from the adulteress [lit. foreign
17
woman] with her smooth words, who
forsakes the companion of her youth and
18
forgets the covenant of her God; for her
house sinks down to death, and her paths
19
to the departed; none who go to her
come back, nor do they regain the paths
of life.
1 Kings 11:1–3a (ESV) Now King Solomon
loved many foreign women, along with the
daughter of Pharaoh: Moabite, Ammonite,
2
Edomite, Sidonian, and Hittite women, from
the nations concerning which the LORD had
said to the people of Israel, “You shall not
enter into marriage with them, neither shall
they with you, for surely they will turn away
your heart after their gods.” Solomon clung
3
to these in love. He had 700 wives, who
were princesses, and 300 concubines.
Proverbs 18:12 (ESV) Before
destruction a man’s heart is
haughty, but humility comes before
honor.
2 Samuel 12:24c (ESV) and she
bore a son, and he called his name
Solomon. And the LORD loved him
[Solomon].
fi
1 Kings 3:3 (ESV) Solomon loved
the LORD, walking in the statutes
of David his father, only he
sacri ced and made offerings at
the high places.
1 Kings 5:1 (ESV) Now Hiram king
of Tyre sent his servants to
Solomon when he heard that they
had anointed him king in place of
his father, for Hiram always loved
David.
1 Kings 10:9 (ESV) Blessed be the
LORD your God, who has delighted
in you and set you on the throne of
Israel! Because the LORD loved
Israel forever, he has made you
king, that you may execute justice
and righteousness.”
1 Kings 10:14–15 (ESV) Now the
weight of gold that came to
Solomon in one year was 666
15
talents of gold, besides that which
came from the explorers and from
the business of the merchants, and
from all the kings of the west and
from the governors of the land.
1 Kings 3:12 (ESV) behold, I now do
according to your word. Behold, I
give you a wise and discerning
mind, so that none like you has
been before you and none like you
shall arise after you.
1 Kings 4:29 (ESV) And God gave
Solomon wisdom and
understanding beyond measure,
and breadth of mind like the sand
on the seashore,
fi
Kings 4:32–34 (ESV) He also spoke 3,000
33
proverbs, and his songs were 1,005. He
spoke of trees, from the cedar that is in
Lebanon to the hyssop that grows out of the
wall. He spoke also of beasts, and of birds,
34
and of reptiles, and of sh. And people of
all nations came to hear the wisdom of
Solomon, and from all the kings of the
earth, who had heard of his wisdom.
1 Kings 10:23 (ESV) Thus King
Solomon excelled all the kings of
the earth in riches and in wisdom.
1 Kings 10:24 (ESV) And the whole
earth sought the presence of
Solomon to hear his wisdom, which
God had put into his mind.
1 Kings 10:25 (ESV) Every one of
them brought his present, articles
of silver and gold, garments,
myrrh, spices, horses, and mules,
so much year by year.
1 Kings 10:26–27 (ESV) And Solomon
gathered together chariots and
horsemen. He had 1,400 chariots and
12,000 horsemen, whom he stationed in
the chariot cities and with the king in
27
Jerusalem. And the king made silver
as common in Jerusalem as stone, and
he made cedar as plentiful as the
sycamore of the Shephelah.
1 Kings 10:28–29 (ESV) And Solomon’s
import of horses was from Egypt and
Kue, and the king’s traders received
29
them from Kue at a price. A chariot
could be imported from Egypt for 600
shekels of silver and a horse for 150,
and so through the king’s traders they
were exported to all the kings of the
Hittites and the kings of Syria

1 Kings 10:22 (ESV) For the king
had a eet of ships of Tarshish at
sea with the eet of Hiram. Once
every three years the eet of ships
of Tarshish used to come bringing
gold, silver, ivory, apes, and
peacocks.
Proverbs 18:12 (ESV) Before
destruction a man’s heart is
haughty, but humility comes before
honor.
Deuteronomy 17:14–20 (ESV) “When you
come to the land that the LORD your God is
giving you, and you possess it and dwell in
it and then say, ‘I will set a king over me,
like all the nations that are around me,’
15you may indeed set a king over you whom
the LORD your God will choose. One from
among your brothers you shall set as king
over you. You may not put a foreigner over
you, who is not your brother.
16aOnly he must not acquire many
horses for himself
1 Kings 10:26 (ESV) And Solomon
gathered together chariots and
horsemen. He had 1,400 chariots
and 12,000 horsemen, whom he
stationed in the chariot cities and
with the king in Jerusalem.
16bor cause the people to return to Egypt in
order to acquire many horses, since the LORD
has said to you, ‘You shall never return that way
again.’
1 Kings 10:28–29 (ESV) And Solomon’s import of
horses was from Egypt and Kue, and the king’s
29
traders received them from Kue at a price. A chariot
could be imported from Egypt for 600 shekels of
silver and a horse for 150, and so through the king’s
traders they were exported to all the kings of the
Hittites and the kings of Syria.
17aAnd he shall not acquire many wives for
himself, lest his heart turn away,
1 Kings 11:1–3a (ESV) Now King Solomon
loved many foreign women, along with the
daughter of Pharaoh: Moabite, Ammonite,
Edomite, Sidonian, and Hittite women, from the
nations concerning which the LORD had said to
the people of Israel, “You shall not enter into
marriage with them, neither shall they with you,
for surely they will turn away your heart after
their gods.” Solomon clung to these in love.
17aAnd he shall not acquire many wives
for himself, lest his heart turn away,
1 Kings 11:3 (ESV) He had 700 wives, who
were princesses, and 300 concubines. And
his wives turned away his heart.
1 Kings 11:4 (ESV) For when Solomon was
old his wives turned away his heart after
other gods, and his heart was not wholly
true to the LORD his God, as was the heart
of David his father.
1 Kings 11:9 (ESV) And the LORD
was angry with Solomon, because
his heart had turned away from
the LORD, the God of Israel, who
had appeared to him twice.
17bnor shall he acquire for himself
excessive silver and gold.
18“And when he sits on the throne of his
kingdom, he shall write for himself in a book
a copy of this law, approved by the Levitical
priests.
19And it shall be with him, and he shall read
in it all the days of his life, that he may learn
to fear the LORD his God by keeping all the
words of this law and these statutes, and
doing them,
Exodus 20:3–5a (ESV) “You shall have no
4
other gods before me. “You shall not make
for yourself a carved image, or any likeness
of anything that is in heaven above, or that
is in the earth beneath, or that is in the
5
water under the earth. You shall not bow
down to them or serve them,
1 Kings 11:5 (ESV) For Solomon went after
Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and
after Milcom the abomination of the
Ammonites.
fi
1 Kings 11:7–8 (ESV) Then Solomon built a
high place for Chemosh the abomination of
Moab, and for Molech the abomination of
the Ammonites, on the mountain east of
8
Jerusalem. And so he did for all his foreign
wives, who made offerings and sacri ced to
their gods.
Proverbs 4:4 (ESV) he taught me and said to me,
“Let your heart hold fast my words; keep
my commandments, and live.
Proverbs 4:21 (ESV) Let them [the parents’
sayings] not escape from your sight; keep
them within your heart.
1 Chronicles 28:9 (ESV) “And you, Solomon
my son, know the God of your father and
serve him with a whole heart and with a
willing mind, for the LORD searches all
hearts and understands every plan and
thought. If you seek him, he will be found
by you, but if you forsake him, he will cast
you off forever.
1 Chronicles 29:19 (ESV) Grant to Solomon
my son a whole heart that he may keep
your commandments, your testimonies, and
your statutes, performing all, and that he
may build the palace for which I have made
provision.”
fl
Proverbs 4:23 (ESV) Keep your heart with all
vigilance, for from it ow the springs of life.
1 John 5:21 (ESV) Little children, keep
yourselves from idols.
2 Thessalonians 3:5 (ESV) May the Lord
direct your hearts to the love of God and to
the steadfastness of Christ.
