The Compound name of God.

Could I be honest with you? SSSSSHHH you can never tell anyone this secret. It could ruin me as a teacher.

I teach Chemistry but I don’t like Chemistry. Hold on I don’t dislike everything I teach I always wanted to be a math teacher algebra and trigonometry are my academic passion and I really really enjoy all things Physics. But truth be told I teach Earth Science and Chemistry because kids need it. Don’t get me wrong there are things in both disciplines that are cool. In earth Science I enjoy researching stuff on Answers in Genesis to see how the heavens declare the glory of God. In Chemistry I just am not a fan of balancing chemical equations and doing stoichometric conversions, but I do see our great creator at work in the order of the elements.

You may ask me where I am going with this science stuff. Let me explain. Last week we learned about the three primary names of God. There is Elohim - Creator all powerful God It is the Hebrew Equivalent to our English Word God The title only belongs to the one true creator God of the Bible but it has been used for other gods also like the gods of Egypt

There is Adonai - which means the LORD our master. It implies that God is above us and we are beneath Him and He deserves our worship and obedience. I am not scared to say that I am the servant of my LORD and Master Jesus Christ.

There is also YAHWEH - The self Existent One. It is in my opinion the proper name of God the root means to become or behold He is the I am that I am that Moses spoke to. He is the God that dwelt on the mercy seat among the cherubim. He is the God who Jesus claimed to be when He said before Abraham was I am.

Just like the three names for God, there are three primary types or groups of elements that make up all the known elements in creation. Metals (the majority of elements the vast majority of elements), metalloids and non metals. Everything is made up of the 118 elements that make the matter that makes up all of the mass around us. From those three groups of 118 elements there is no limit to the ammound of compounds that can be created and what can be done in all of nature. There are metallic bonds Ionic bonds and Covalent bonds. And I could talk to a long time about each one of them, but I see such order in chemical composition and I give God all the credit for that. I look at an elements desire to work in groups of eight that give us an idea of how chemicals will behave as another sign of God’s order, where in my mind you can take and this is one of my favorite things is talking about the ionic bond between the halogens and alkali metals to create a stable bond. Halogens and Alkali metals are very reactive and dangerous. They include chemicals that you can’t just play with but when they have bonded they become some of the most stable compounds on the planet.

I would like you to consider this. When you look at the primary names of God you should fear the power that is behind those names.

Elohim - God the creator, He is the God who keeps the planets in motion and the stars in space. He has created this delicate world for you to live in. With a whispher he can flood it or burn it with fire. One of those He has done and the other He has promised that He will do. FEAR ELOHIM!

Adonai - God is our master. He holds the destiny of your soul in His hand we are bound to the law of death as Paul called it, not because it is evil but we can never match the standard of its goodness, the wages of sin is death. Fear Adonai

YAHWEH - The Holy Self existant one. There was a reason that the Priests tied a rope around the ankle of the High priest when walking into the holy of holies. There was a reason that Nadab and Abihu died when they offered a strange sacrifice before the LORD. There was a reason Annias and Sapphira died when lying to the Holy Spirit

I wouldn’t suggest that you play with concentrated Chlorine Bromine Flourine Sodium Potassium or Lithium, just like I wouldn’t suggest reaching out and touching the Holiness of God. But when combined you can have some of the most stable compounds you can image. The compound names of God are more stable like some of the ionic and covalent compounds you can imagine.

The Primary names of God teach us to fear the Holy God.

Deuteronomy 10:10–12 As at the first time, I stayed in the mountain forty days and forty nights; the Lord also heard me at that time, and the Lord chose not to destroy you. Then the Lord said to me, ‘Arise, begin your journey before the people, that they may go in and possess the land which I swore to their fathers to give them.’ “And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways and to love Him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul,

A healthy fear of chemicals is important, that is why we put warning labels on dangerous chemicals. If you go to the nursery in church. There is some perminant maker written on the white board. DANGER POISON these markers are not for children. The markers are gone but the warning remains. It is clearly written in Pastor Dan’s writing. Like wise the Bible warns us of the dangers of sin.

Being a sinner in the face of a Holy God is dangerous.

Hebrews 10:31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

Like Annias and Sapphira and Nadab and Abihu I would not want to be a sinner falling into the hands of Yahweh we need to have a healthly fear of the Almighty God.

Compound names of God help stabilize our understand of our relationship with God.

There are three compound names of God.

just like metallic ionic and covalent bonds there are three ways to combine God’s names

1 Adonai Elohim - Lord God

2 Adonai Jehovah - Lord LORD

3 Jehovah Elohim - LORD GOD

I know what you might be thinking Pastor what about Jehovah Jirah or Jehovah Nissi. Let me tell you there are a number of other titles that we will give God but that is a lesson for another day. We still have to look at the power of the name of Jesus and what that name means. But let’s take these three primary Hebrew names for God and combine them in the scriptures

1 Adonai Elohim - Lord God

The God to whom we make our humble requests.

Daniel 9:3 Then I set my face toward the Lord God to make request by prayer and supplications, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes.

When you come before God with all your concerns when you cry out to him as you realize like Daniel that their are problems and you need the help of the Almighty God come before Him. God my Master I need your help

The God who is the master of His creation, life, and death.

Ezekiel 37:9–10 Also He said to me, “Prophesy to the breath, prophesy, son of man, and say to the breath, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe on these slain, that they may live.” ’ ” So I prophesied as He commanded me, and breath came into them, and they lived, and stood upon their feet, an exceedingly great army.

The Valley of the dry bones Thus says the Lord God Adonai Elohim can these bones live again only God can cause that to happen

This God is not just our master He is the master of all creation. Have you ever prayed people in the path of a hurricane, Adonai Elohim Please help those people. You are the maker of the wind and also the one who is the master that decides when people live and die

He is the master of the wind, Jesus is the one who calms the storms

God is the master over and above all false deities.

Deuteronomy 3:24 “O Lord God, You have begun to show Your servant Your greatness and Your mighty hand, for what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do anything like Your works and Your mighty deeds?”

In this verse Moses is acknowledging that God is superior to all the pagan gods of Cannaan. Let me tell you their are false gods in this world Allah, Hindu gods and others. There is one thing that you need to know that our god is the master over them all. You may say but they aren’t real. I agree there is no god allah in a pantheon of gods, however! We have a real adversary the Devil who has his as he call them principalities and powers like the prince of persia who is surely more than a man in the book of Daniel and there are probably evils out there. God is the master over them Remember when the demon named legion.

Jesus has power over evil.

Mark 5:6–8 When he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and worshiped Him. And he cried out with a loud voice and said, “What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore You by God that You do not torment me.” For He said to him, “Come out of the man, unclean spirit!”

this is jesus being Adonai Elohim the Master god above all others, evil cowers to Him.

2 Adonai YAHWEH - Lord LORD

Yahweh is the master of the people of God.

Genesis 15:2 But Abram said, “Lord God, what will You give me, seeing I go childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?”

Genesis 15:8 And he said, “Lord God, how shall I know that I will inherit it?”

Abraham’s God and master was Yahweh. I love this story it is when God gives Abraham of vision of the night sky and says your children will be like the stars of the sky if you could count them. I don’t think he gave Abraham a vision of a stary night but a hubble telescope view of the heavens. When God walked the blood trail making his covenant with Abraham and Abraham says YAHWEH you are my master.

Yahweh the master of His people Israel.

Exodus 34:23 Three times in the year all your men shall appear before the Lord, the Lord God of Israel.

Israel has a master and His name is Yahweh. I believe that Israel needs to be saved by the blood of Jesus Christ that is what Paul wanted for them. Some have found Him still others will soon and very soon. But throughout the ages Yahweh has been there God. Have they chased after other gods at times sure. Have they gone secular rejected the son sure. Pick up the Bible but Yahweh always brings him back to Himself. A big prayer in these days is that Yahweh will pull Israel back to Himself.

Yahweh is the God who holds Israel in His hands.

Deuteronomy 9:26 Therefore I prayed to the Lord, and said: “O Lord God, do not destroy Your people and Your inheritance whom You have redeemed through Your greatness, whom You have brought out of Egypt with a mighty hand.”

Adonai Yahweh. Call out to God in that fashion once in a while when you pray for the peace of Jerusalem. Adonai Yahweh - it may seem seem strange or you could just say Lord LORD I pray for your people Israel take care of them like you always have.

Yahweh is your master.

Judges 6:22 Now Gideon perceived that He was the Angel of the Lord. So Gideon said, “Alas, O Lord God! For I have seen the Angel of the Lord face to face.”

Not only is Yahweh Israel and Abraham’s master. He is also your master. I love it in the epistles where the writer says I am the bond servant of Jesus Christ same idea Yahweh is the God that I serve.

3 Yahweh Elohim - LORD God (Capital LORD)

The Sovereign God

Jeremiah 32:17 “Ah, Lord God! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. There is nothing too hard for You.

The Two major names of the Hebrew words for Deity put together The first two are more rare, this one is abundant and the most personal. It means YAHWEH the Holy always existant one is my God the Almighty creator of heaven and earth. It has a deep meaning for the Christian. I could just pull up dozens of verses with this phrase so let’s focus on Genesis.

The LORD God’s relationship with His creation.

Genesis 2:4 This is the history of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens,

The LORD God’s relationship with mankind.

Genesis 2:7–8 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. The Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden, and there He put the man whom He had formed.

The LORD God’s moral authority.

Genesis 2:16–17 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”

The LORD God’s position in your family.

Genesis 2:18–25 And the Lord God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.” Out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name. So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him. And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. Then the rib which the Lord God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man. And Adam said: “This is now bone of my bones And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man.” Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. And they were both naked, the man and his wife and they were not ashamed.

Yahweh God cared about Adam and wanted him to have Eve and provided her. God will provide you the family that He wants you to have. You have a responsibility in your family did Adam have a responsibility with Eve absolutely and he betrayed that when he ate of the forbidden fruit but the LORD God wants what is good for your family

The LORD God wants a relationship with mankind.

Genesis 3:8–9 And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. Then the Lord God called to Adam and said to him, “Where are you?”

You know ,God is crying out to you

I started off today saying the combination of the names of God are like what happens when you take elements that are powerful and dangerous by themselves and you bond them together that is where you get the stability in chemical compounds When you bond the names of God.

Adonai Elohim -Master of the winds God above all Gods please Master God help I humbly come before you

Adonai Yahweh - God the master of Abraham the God of Israel, My Master My Lord Jesus Christ the one who I serve

But Yahweh Elohim

The person who spoke the heavens into existance the one who gives me life and breath created me in His image. The one who directs every part of my life. The God who gives me my family The God who wants to have a relationship with me. These things give us the real relationship with God beyond his primary names. With His compound names he goes from being a God who sits in the heaven to wanting to be with us. But we messed it up! But Yahweh Elohim..… Yahweh Elohim

The LORD God is the one who redeems us.

Genesis 3:14–15 So the Lord God said to the serpent: “Because you have done this, You are cursed more than all cattle, And more than every beast of the field; On your belly you shall go, And you shall eat dust All the days of your life. And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel.”

God’s plan from eternity past is a plan of redemption. God made man in His image to have relationships we broke that relationship but God sent His son to redeem us. From Genesis 3 on the plan was always to send Jesus the redeemer to restore the relationship with you

God Elohim - God in the heaven

He is Master - Adonai

He is Yahweh - No beginning no end Holy God of Israel that dwells behind the viel.

He is the God of God’s - His power is supreme

He is the Yahweh the Master - The God of Israel and the church God will be with them and be their God

He is Yahweh Elohim - My God My Redeemer
