Gifts of The Holy Spirit

1 Corinthians 12:4–11 ESV

4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; 6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. 7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8 For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.

1 Corinthians 12:4–11 – Manifestation Gifts

1. Word of Wisdom

* Supernatural insight for applying knowledge in complex situations (e.g., solving conflict or offering timely advice).

2. Word of Knowledge

* Divine revelation of information you couldn’t have known naturally (e.g., knowing someone’s hidden need or condition).

3. Faith

* Exceptional confidence in God’s power and promises, often in seemingly impossible situations.

4. Healing

* The Spirit working through someone to bring physical, emotional, or spiritual healing.

5. Miraculous Powers

* God’s power displayed through supernatural events (e.g., protection, deliverance, divine intervention).

6. Prophecy

* Declaring a message from God to encourage, correct, or strengthen others.

7. Distinguishing Between Spirits

* Ability to discern whether something is of the Holy Spirit, human origin, or demonic influence.

8. Speaking in Tongues

* Speaking in an unknown spiritual or earthly language, often as a form of prayer or worship.

9. Interpretation of Tongues

* Understanding and explaining the message given in tongues to edify others.

Romans 12:4–8 – Motivational Gifts

1. Prophecy

* Declaring truth boldly and calling others to live faithfully; often passionate about right and wrong.

2. Serving (Helps)

* Joyfully meeting others’ practical needs, often behind the scenes.

3. Teaching

* Explaining Scripture clearly and accurately to help others grow in understanding.

4. Encouraging (Exhortation)

* Inspiring and motivating others, especially during trials or discouragement.

5. Giving

* Generously sharing resources with joy and without seeking recognition.

6. Leading (Administration)

* Organizing and directing people or ministries effectively, often with vision and responsibility.

7. Showing Mercy

* Demonstrating compassion and kindness to those in need, pain, or distress.

Ephesians 4:11–13 – Leadership/Equipping Gifts

1. Apostle

* A pioneer who lays foundations, starts ministries, or brings the Gospel cross-culturally.

2. Prophet

* One who hears from God and shares timely messages, often with focus on direction, warning, or encouragement.

3. Evangelist

* A natural soul-winner with a strong desire to share the Gospel and see people saved.

4. Pastor (Shepherd)

* One who nurtures and cares for the spiritual well-being of individuals or groups.

5. Teacher

* Focuses on sound doctrine and clear instruction to build maturity and understanding.

Diversity of Gifts for a Unified Mission

1 Corinthians 12:14–20 ESV

14 For the body does not consist of one member but of many. 15 If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. 16 And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would be the sense of hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell? 18 But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. 19 If all were a single member, where would the body be? 20 As it is, there are many parts, yet one body.

2 Timothy 1:6 ESV

6 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands,

1 Timothy 4:11–16 ESV

11 Command and teach these things. 12 Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. 13 Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, to teaching. 14 Do not neglect the gift you have, which was given you by prophecy when the council of elders laid their hands on you. 15 Practice these things, immerse yourself in them, so that all may see your progress. 16 Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers.

The gift was given TO you not, FOR you

It is to build up the church not yourself.
