recap
Joseph has put his brothers to the test
He has set up benjamin—-stole the silver cup
and he wanted to see hs brothers reaction
to the favored brother
the brothers had a much different reaction
then they did with Joseph
there was a change of heart
and they passed the test
at the sight of their concern and love for their brother and father jacob
Joseph couldnt keep the bit up anymore
He needed to reveal who he was
Genesis 45:1–3 ESV
Then Joseph could not control himself before all those who stood by him. He cried, “Make everyone go out from me.” So no one stayed with him when Joseph made himself known to his brothers. And he wept aloud, so that the Egyptians heard it, and the household of Pharaoh heard it. And Joseph said to his brothers, “I am Joseph! Is my father still alive?” But his brothers could not answer him, for they were dismayed at his presence.
Joseph is so overcome by emotional stress
and he demands
that everyone except his brothers leaves the room
and with passion and loud exclemations
He reveals his Identity with tears
I am Joseph !
and his deep concern for His father shines through..
He does not say I am joseph, you heathens sold me into slavery
he does not say , I am joseph what were you thinking
He says I am joseph , what about my dad ? is he ok
but in reply the brothers could not speak.
they are in Shock ….
the word dismayed in hebrew means to be terrified
they are now face to face with the one they rejected ….
could you only imagine what is going through their heads
we rejected joseph and now HE IS STANDING BEFORE US
we tried to kill him and now he is the ruler in egypt
we turned our back on him
and now we are bowing down to him
now I want you to see Jesus in this story
this has implications to the way
that the jews are going to react to Jesus
when he reveals himself to them
The jewish nation has rejected Jesus as their messiaha
they are the ones who put him on the cross
similarly to how Joseph was put into the pit
by his own brothers
there is a rejection of the favored Son
God has ressurected Jesus from the dead
and seated Him in the highest position of authority
like Joseph
and He raised Jesus to save the rest of the nations
gentiles
just like he did with joseph and the grain duing famine
all of the nations came to him for salvation
But his own people rejected him
however this rejection will not last forever
God is patient and longsuffering with Israel
and the promises He has made to them will
come true…
paul fleshes this out in Romans
Romans 11:11 ESV
So I ask, did they stumble in order that they might fall? By no means! Rather, through their trespass salvation has come to the Gentiles, so as to make Israel jealous.
Romans 11:25–26 ESV
Lest you be wise in your own sight, I do not want you to be unaware of this mystery, brothers: a partial hardening has come upon Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. And in this way all Israel will be saved, as it is written, “The Deliverer will come from Zion, he will banish ungodliness from Jacob”;
Gods salvation to the non Jews is meant to make them jealous
and in turn bring them back to God through Jesus
when the fullness of non Jews are saved
God is going to do a mighty work in the nation of Israel
and reveal himself to them
just like joseph…
this is a picture of Jesus revelation to the jewish people
and when they see this that Jesus is the CHrist
they will be dismayed
like the sons of Israel they will mourn
as they have rejected and spurned their messiah
Revelation 1:7 ESV
Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him. Even so. Amen.
this is the fear and trembling that is associated at His revelation
when He comes back
there will be terror on the face of the earth
but we see from this story
that God will have compassion on those who turn back to Him
His hands are out towards Israel and the rest of the world
come , repent, and I will welcome you in
and thats exactly what we see with Joseph
pure grace and trust in God
and His sovreignty
q. what will your reaction be when Jesus comes back and is revealed as the Son of God.
discuss rapture —- God is coming back to bring tribulation on the earth and pour out His wrath against ungodliness
but those in Christ will be taken up and out of it in what is called the rapture
Revelation 3:10 ESV
Because you have kept my word about patient endurance, I will keep you from the hour of trial that is coming on the whole world, to try those who dwell on the earth.
1 Thessalonians 4:16–17 ESV
For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.
When He comes back for His Church
we dont want to be like the brothers of Joseph
terrified and scared for our lives
and filled with shame because of our rejection of God
we want to be in Gods grace
some will be saved through the tribulation
but you can be ready for it now
turn to Jesus
who loves you and has called you into His kingdom
by grace his hand is always stretched out towards you
and His hand is stretched out to the unbelievers as well
may we have a heart that desires Gods revelation to the jewish nation as well as all others who are in rebellion against God
can we take a moment to pray for the jewish nation of Israel
for their salvation……

sovereignty of God
