Call to Worship

Psalm 57:8–11 CSB
8 Wake up, my soul! Wake up, harp and lyre! I will wake up the dawn. 9 I will praise you, Lord, among the peoples; I will sing praises to you among the nations. 10 For your faithful love is as high as the heavens; your faithfulness reaches the clouds. 11 God, be exalted above the heavens; let your glory be over the whole earth.

Ephesians 6:1–4 CSB
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, because this is right. 2 Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment with a promise, 3 so that it may go well with you and that you may have a long life in the land. 4 Fathers, don’t stir up anger in your children, but bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.

they thought their publicity stunt was as important as this ancient, mysterious art.
We take his perfect ancient plan for life and for a thriving community and creation, I we think that our plan, our agenda, is as important as his agenda.
We often live our lives as if we are the main characters. We’ve been talking about. We aren’t the main character.
If you were to summarize the history of the world and the bible, you could do it pretty easily by saying that history, all of it, is the story of how Christ is redeeming people who have fallen into sin.
Creation - fall - redemption - restoration
Gospel
That he defeated the power of sin and death and gave us that ability to do that as well.
So we are living on this mission. If you are a christian, you are called to live as a side character in the larger story of Christ’s Redemption of the world.
But there is a fight and we do have an enemy and that enemy we talk in three ways - the devil, sin in our hearts and the corruption of our culture.
the enemy’s agenda is to beleive that there is a better way - we take the beauty of what God has made and constructed and then we put up our banners of sin, we trample on his art. We don’t live according to him. We act as if our plan is as important and precious as his plan.

Compelling Lie - Felt/Bible revealed need

And we see this perhaps the most clearly in families.
Families are under attack. Now you can see that in our culture and devaluing family connections.
But it is really attacked not just from the outside, it’s attacked from the inside, through rebellion, through dishonor, through raising our kids with the wrong goals. The family is most under attack when we, as individual members of the family, live as if we are the main character not christ.
So let’s look at that. How does this all play out. How does the resurrection give us the power to overcome it?
So let’s start with the kids because that’s where Paul starts
Ephesians 6:1 CSB
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, because this is right.
A. It’s Right because it is the way God created the world to work
That you have people who are uniquely invested in your life - for your whole life
Not friends, not teachers nobody is as long term as mom and dad
B. But Growing up is hard
Open Rebellion vs Secret Rebellion - passive aggressive - living a double life
C. God is calling you to obey your parents - why? Because you are important to God. He see’s the greatness in you and he wants you to achieve that greatness.
Obeying your parents trains you to obey God
You matter, your life matter, the way you live matters - not someday, today! Right now
What is God calling you to in your family - pushing back the darkness
What is God calling you to do in your school or on your sports team
What is God calling you to do in the church
We want everyone, 6th grade and up to have a role at Mercy Hill. If you don’t have one yet, we need to find one. We want you to be all-in too!
D. But there are limits. You obey under God.
E. Don’t rebel, don’t nag, pray. That was my rule.
How are you praying for your parents?
So the first people who Paul is talking to is minor children. Historically, in his day, this would have also included adult children. And so we can’t just gloss over this next passage and think it is only for minors.
Some of this is cultural. We are given autonomy sooner and so obedience isn’t the same. But we are called to still honor our parents.
Ephesians 6:1–4 CSB
2 Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment with a promise, 3 so that it may go well with you and that you may have a long life in the land.
A. You won’t be grateful to God if you can’t be grateful to your parents
I asked my spanish teacher what’s their most important commandment
We have a responsiblity towards them, to love them. Too often we only consider their faults but we don’t think about their sacrifices and the pain they endured for us.
Our culture encourages canceling parents if they have the wrong political views, if they don’t always support us. It wants us to look at the bad.
How are you praying for your parents?
Of course, there are bad parents out there and there is real pain there.
There is a third group though and that is those who are parents now:
Ephesians 6:1–4 CSB
4 Fathers, don’t stir up anger in your children, but bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.
Fathers had a lot more power.
What is the goal of your parenting?
happiness - they will never be happy without the Lord
These kids are great - best books Romancing your Child’s Heart - they find it more compelling than the world. So we teach them their responsibilty to God, we model how god teaches us to love, we teach about the mission that God has for us.
High responsibility: Covenant responsiblity
The enemy is going to constantly be pulling us into thinking that we are the main character
but we have to remember what Jesus did
Let’s get on board with that
As our families start to reflect the resurrection power of Christ, there is no limit on what we can accomplish together.

Text:

Lord’s Supper:

On the night when he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
25 In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, and said, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

Benediction:

The LORD bless you and keep you;
the LORD makes his face shine upon you and be gracious to you:
The LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.
