Introduction to Moses

Moses is mentioned in 31 of the 66 books of the Bible
Moses is mentioned in the chapter of faith in Hebrews 11
Guess who is mentioned right before Moses? His parents...
Moses is the 3rd most mentioned person in the Bible behind Jesus and David
Moses was the third-born… Miriam… Aaron (3 years later - Moses)
Moses’ father: Amram
He was from the tribe of Levi
Moses’ mother: Jochebed
She was from the tribe of Levi
We have examples of boys and girls who turned out to do great things for God with no spiritual influence from a parent...
We also have examples of a boy or girl who turned out to do great things for God with only one spiritual parent...
But what an exponentially beneficial blessing it is for a child to grow up with two spiritual parents who live and raise their children the Bible way...

1. The Birth of Moses

a.) He was born in adversity

Exodus 1:15–22 KJV 1900
15 And the king of Egypt spake to the Hebrew midwives, of which the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah: 16 And he said, When ye do the office of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them upon the stools; if it be a son, then ye shall kill him: but if it be a daughter, then she shall live. 17 But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men children alive. 18 And the king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said unto them, Why have ye done this thing, and have saved the men children alive? 19 And the midwives said unto Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women; for they are lively, and are delivered ere the midwives come in unto them. 20 Therefore God dealt well with the midwives: and the people multiplied, and waxed very mighty. 21 And it came to pass, because the midwives feared God, that he made them houses. 22 And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river, and every daughter ye shall save alive.
Context:
Vs. 6 - Joseph and all that generation died (who had favor among the Egyptians and leaders)
Vs. 7 - children of Israel were fruitful, increased abundantly, multiplied, waxed exceeding mighty
Vs. 8 - New king who knew not Joseph
Vs. 9-14 - made their lives miserable out of fear and jealousy
Now:
Direct orders from Pharaoh to midwives
“...if it be a son, then ye shall kill him: but if it be a daughter, than she shall live.”
The bold faith of the midwives - “But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them...”
Adversity… challenges… governmental opposition...
All things that Moses was born in, grew up around and knew well...
God would later use this to be part of the building blocks of Moses’ person to do what God wanted Him to do...
Had Moses not grown up in adversity, challenges and governmental opposition… Would he have been able to accomplish what God called him to do?
Acts 7:19–20 KJV 1900
19 The same dealt subtilly with our kindred, and evil entreated our fathers, so that they cast out their young children, to the end they might not live. 20 In which time Moses was born, and was exceeding fair, and nourished up in his father’s house three months:
Right now - we talk about how difficult it is for a child to grow up in this time...
However, may God be using the adversity… challenges… governmental opposition… to start the building blocks of our children to do something really great for Him?
**You don’t need to protect your children from God’s will!
**You need to protect them from exiting God’s will!

b.) He was saved by his mother

Exodus 2:1–4 KJV 1900
1 And there went a man of the house of Levi, and took to wife a daughter of Levi. 2 And the woman conceived, and bare a son: and when she saw him that he was a goodly child, she hid him three months. 3 And when she could not longer hide him, she took for him an ark of bulrushes, and daubed it with slime and with pitch, and put the child therein; and she laid it in the flags by the river’s brink. 4 And his sister stood afar off, to wit what would be done to him.
Another Israelite who refuses to obey the Pharoah
“When she could not longer hide him”
She placed baby Moses in an Ark
We are the protection for our children...
Protection from the world… from themselves…
But when we can no longer hide our children...
We must set them up for success...
Jochebed placed Moses in a carefully constructed ark and set him off down river...
No doubt, as a momma, as she let go of that ark, she had thoughts:
of the ark tipping over and him drowning
of animals getting to him and eating him
of him being found by someone who would obey Pharaoh and have him killed according to law
A 3 month old baby boy...
She wrapped him with the bullrushes...
She daubed it with slime and pitch...
It was carefully considered and constructed...
She decided what she wanted around and protecting her baby boy before he was off to Egypt...
As parents, we must take careful consideration as we decide what we want surrounding our babies before sending them off to Egypt...

c.) He was found by the princess

Exodus 2:5–10 KJV 1900
5 And the daughter of Pharaoh came down to wash herself at the river; and her maidens walked along by the river’s side; and when she saw the ark among the flags, she sent her maid to fetch it. 6 And when she had opened it, she saw the child: and, behold, the babe wept. And she had compassion on him, and said, This is one of the Hebrews’ children. 7 Then said his sister to Pharaoh’s daughter, Shall I go and call to thee a nurse of the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for thee? 8 And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, Go. And the maid went and called the child’s mother. 9 And Pharaoh’s daughter said unto her, Take this child away, and nurse it for me, and I will give thee thy wages. And the woman took the child, and nursed it. 10 And the child grew, and she brought him unto Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. And she called his name Moses: and she said, Because I drew him out of the water.
of course this points to the sovereignty of God
Moses had to be found by the PERFECT person
Otherwise he would have been murdered with the decree that rested on all the people
The greatest test of faith for Moses’ parents was “… and he became her son.”
Now Moses was in the hand of the Egyptian princess...
What would he become?
What would he be taught?
Acts 7:21–22 KJV 1900
21 And when he was cast out, Pharaoh’s daughter took him up, and nourished him for her own son. 22 And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and in deeds.
Their nourishing
Their wisdom
Yet we will find this was all part of God’s perfect plan for Moses...
He was born in adversity
He was saved by his mother
He was found by the princess
