Matthew 5: 5 (NIV)
Howard Thurman, in his work, including his influential book Jesus and the Disinherited, he interprets "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth" from Matthew 5:5. He sees it as a profound message of hope and empowerment for those who are marginalized and oppressed. Thurman's understanding of "meekness" is that it is as strength under control, a disciplined calmness, and the ability to wield power without undue harshness. Thurman, writing in the context of segregation and racial injustice in the mid-20th century, "blessed are the meek," speak directly to the experiences of the oppressed and disinherited. He saw Jesus' life and teachings as a blueprint for those facing fear, hatred, and deception. The path to overcoming these negative forces lies in embracing self-love and love for one another, which leads to a kind of liberation. Inheriting the earth is not just about material possessions or physical land; it signifies a sense of belonging, purpose, spiritual power, and their rightful place in the world. We cannot lead others until we have found our own direction in life; we cannot serve others until we have put aside self; we cannot be in control of others until we have put until we have learned to control ourselves but those who give themselves to the complete control of God will gained this meekness which will indeed enable them to inherit the earth. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. This doesn't necessarily mean inheriting physical land, but rather a spiritual inheritance, a deeper connection with God and His blessings. The word meek is one of the honorable words of life. It carries the ideal of spinelessness, subservience, submission. Meekness is often misunderstood as weakness or passivity. However, it's more understood as a strength of character that is controlled and directed by God.
The word meek in Greek was one of the great ethical words. “The meek are the 'gentle'… those who do not assert themselves over others in order to further their own agendas in their own strength, but who will nonetheless inherit the earth because they trust in God to direct the outcome of events. Meekness, in its truest form, is not a sign of weakness, but rather a display of self-control and humility. It is about having the strength to restrain oneself and to act with grace and consideration. Meekness can involve having the courage to stand up for those who are less able to defend themselves by using your influence to protect, protest, or advocate for the vulnerable.
The Bible gives two perfect examples of meekness, such as Moses, who was described as the meekest man on earth, and Jesus, who demonstrated gentleness and humility. Matt. 11: 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Meekness can also involve patience and a willingness to endure hardship or injustice without retaliating or seeking revenge. Here’s one prospective: Blessed are those who are always angry at the right time and never angry at the wrong time if we ask what time what is the right time and the wrong time the general rule for life that it is never right to be angry for any insult I injury done to ourselves but there it is right to be angry at injuries injustices done to other people it is having legitimate discontent. This is the right time to be angry when we hear of our Hispanic brothers and sisters been taking and deported by ICE or when we here about our black and brown brothers and sisters being gunned down at the hands of a police officer who took an oath to protect and serve; when we have an immoral budget that our Congress wants to pass for the next ten years that will hurt and kill millions of people if they lose their Medicaid and cut programs like SNAP for our children. This is the right time to be angry. A second perspective is blessed are those who have every instinct every impulse every passion under control and blessed are those who are entirely self-control it is not so much the blessing of those who are self-control for such complete self-control is beyond human capacity rather it is the blessing of those who are completely God control only for only in his service did we find our perfect freedom and in doing so our peace without humility we cannot learn the realization of our own ignorance without humility there can be no such thing as love for the very beginning of love is a sense of unworthiness without humility there can be no true relationship with God before it begins we're realizing our own weaknesses and our need for God true humility can only be reached when we are always conscious that we are the creation on the creatures creation that God the creation of God and that without God we cannot do nothing. So, blessed are those who are always angry at the right time and never angry at the wrong time who have every instinct, impulse, and passion under control. Because they themselves are God-controlled, who have the humility to realize their own ignorance and their own weakness, for such people can indeed rule the world—when you are meek. Shout when! The blessing is in the when. You shall inherit the earth. When you have been tried in the fire, you will come forth as pure gold. When you are willing to yield to others—you are blessed! When you possess the strength to act with grace and consideration, even in challenging situations, you shall inherit the earth. When you choose to use restraint and kindness—you are blessed. The blessing is in the when! When you don't boast or look down on others—you shall inherit the earth! when you seek me with all your heart you will find me! Is. 43: 2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. Ps. 94: 18 When I said, “My foot is slipping,” your unfailing love, Lord, supported me. Acts 1: 8 you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Heb. 10: 36 when you persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised. The blessing is in when! I don’t know when God is going to do it, but I know He will deliver! Ps. 118: 5 When hard pressed, I cried to the Lord; he brought me into a spacious place. And When I see Jesus, amen.
