Family Matters 10 | Dealing With The Death of a Family Member (Job 1)

Be Sorrowful (vs.20)

Rent his mantle
(When Jacob’s sons told him that Joseph was dead.) Genesis 37:34 “And Jacob rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his loins, and mourned for his son many days.”
Mourned - to feel sadness and express it through vocalizations, tears, and ritual expressions of sadness and grief.

Be Stunned (vs.20)

Shaved his head
(When the children of Israel were marrying heathen) Ezra 9:3 “And when I heard this thing, I rent my garment and my mantle, and plucked off the hair of my head and of my beard, and sat down astonied.”
Astonied - to feel sadness and express it through vocalizations, tears, and ritual expressions of sadness and grief; to be or become in a destroyed state that is subsequently absent of people, animals, or things.

Be Shattered (vs.20)

Fell down
Psalm 38:8–10 “I am feeble and sore broken: I have roared by reason of the disquietness of my heart. Lord, all my desire is before thee; And my groaning is not hid from thee. My heart panteth, my strength faileth me: As for the light of mine eyes, it also is gone from me.”
Feeble - to be or become depleted of strength or energy.
Sore broken - as a mortar and pestle, constantly being beat and ground.
Roared - to vocally indicate pain, discomfort, or displeasure; almost always inarticulate. (When our prayers seem to be more animal that spiritual)
Panteth -  to pulsate or pound with abnormal force. (The heart goes into a constant state of perpetual palpitation. When the soul seeks sympathy in sorrow and finds none, the heart begins to literally break.)
My strength faileth me - When there seems to be a clear perception that no one can help, say the right word, or lead us to Christ, we might as well give up on living ourselves.
As for the light of mine eyes, it also is gone from me - Darkness is all that we can see. Doom has set in. The joy, happiness, and peace that was there has turned to dark.

Be Submissive (vs.20-21)

Worshipped —vs.21
Though we are sorrowful, we have a sureness.
1 Thessalonians 4:13 “But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.”
Though we are stunned, we have stability.
Mark 4:38–41 “And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish? And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith? And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”
Though we are shattered, we have strength.
2 Corinthians 12:8–10 “For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.”
