Exodus 31:12-18 - Get Some Rest

Think of a time when you felt completely rested. Was it before your current job, before the kids were born, or during a moment when you could finally step away from all responsibilities? Many of us feel rested only when we can escape our duties entirely.
This creates a difficult tension. When we have important responsibilities, we often feel we cannot rest. We stay tense, unable to turn off, believing that if we step away, everything will fall apart. We tell ourselves that our responsibilities are more important than the rest our bodies and minds desperately need.
But is this how God thinks about responsibility and rest?
When God Gave the Ultimate Responsibility
In Exodus, God brought the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt, through the Red Sea, and to Mount Sinai where He made a covenant with them. At this mountain, Moses received not only the law but detailed instructions for building the tabernacle—the place where God's presence would dwell and where people could worship Him.
God chose Bezalel and Oholiab to lead this monumental project, giving them His Spirit and the skills needed for the work. Building the tabernacle was not a simple task. This was the place where people would draw near to God, where priests would mediate between God and the people through sacrifices. The responsibility was enormous and required complete focus and attention.
If you have ever felt the weight of an important responsibility—a promotion at work that keeps you checking emails at night, or the overwhelming duty of keeping a newborn safe—you understand the pressure these workers faced. There is something in the back of our minds during these seasons: "I want to rest, but I cannot. There is too much to do. If I rest, something bad might happen."
God's Surprising Priority
But after giving all these detailed instructions for the tabernacle in Exodus chapters 25-31, God makes a startling statement in verse 13: "Above all, keep my Sabbath."
Above everything He had just commanded, God prioritized the Sabbath—the seventh day of rest. The language is unmistakable and severe: "Everyone who profanes the Sabbath shall be put to death. Whoever does any work on it shall be cut off from their people" (verse 14). Three times God emphasizes that if anyone—including Bezalel who was leading the entire operation—works on the Sabbath day, that person would face death.
After giving extensive instructions for the most important building project in Israel's history, God said: "Above all of this doing, you need to keep the Sabbath and rest."
We often consider responsibility more important than rest, but God chooses rest over responsibility.
Three Signs of the Sabbath
The Sabbath was designed to teach the Israelites three profound truths:
1. God Is Working
First, the Sabbath was "a sign between me and you throughout your generations that you may know that I, the Lord, sanctify you" (verse 13). The day of rest reminded the people that God was actively working in their hearts, setting them apart for Himself. Taking a day of rest means trusting that God is working behind the scenes, both in us and around us.
2. Relationship Is Secure
Second, the Sabbath was "a covenant forever" (verse 16), representing their secure relationship with God. They did not need to work for God's acceptance—they could work from that relationship. When there is no trust in our secure relationship with Christ, there is no rest. We cannot rest on the inside if we believe we must constantly do better to earn God's approval.
3. God Provides Refreshment
Third, the Sabbath pointed back to Creation when God rested on the seventh day and "was refreshed" (verse 17). Not because God was exhausted, but because He chose to rest and declared His work complete. Real, deep rest comes straight from God.
Jesus, Our True Rest
This is why Jesus said, "Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28-30). Jesus is the fulfillment of the Sabbath, having completed the work of salvation. He calls us to find rest in Him, not through our striving, but through trusting His finished work.
Trust Enables Rest
The key insight is this: there can be no rest without trust. For the Israelites to take a day off from their essential work, they had to trust that God would not be angry, that He would continue to provide, and that He would protect them.
When we go deeper, we realize that God does not simply choose rest over responsibility—He chooses trust over our attempts to do everything ourselves.
A Personal Reflection
Consider the responsibilities in your life that drain you of rest. What would it look like to trust God in the midst of those responsibilities? This is not about abandoning your duties, but about seeking the Lord within them.
When you feel the need for rest, go to the Lord in prayer. Often, there are areas where we believe everything depends on our constant involvement. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal where you might be trying to do it all yourself. When God shows you these areas, He will also show you what to do about them.
As you listen to Him and move forward in trust, He will bring rest into those situations. God chooses trust over responsibility. He wants us to trust Him instead of trying to carry every burden alone.
