Israel has much to celebrate - even when she is suffering.
Nehemiah 9:6–15 ESV
6 “You are the Lord, you alone. You have made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them; and you preserve all of them; and the host of heaven worships you. 7 You are the Lord, the God who chose Abram and brought him out of Ur of the Chaldeans and gave him the name Abraham. 8 You found his heart faithful before you, and made with him the covenant to give to his offspring the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Perizzite, the Jebusite, and the Girgashite. And you have kept your promise, for you are righteous. 9 “And you saw the affliction of our fathers in Egypt and heard their cry at the Red Sea, 10 and performed signs and wonders against Pharaoh and all his servants and all the people of his land, for you knew that they acted arrogantly against our fathers. And you made a name for yourself, as it is to this day. 11 And you divided the sea before them, so that they went through the midst of the sea on dry land, and you cast their pursuers into the depths, as a stone into mighty waters. 12 By a pillar of cloud you led them in the day, and by a pillar of fire in the night to light for them the way in which they should go. 13 You came down on Mount Sinai and spoke with them from heaven and gave them right rules and true laws, good statutes and commandments, 14 and you made known to them your holy Sabbath and commanded them commandments and statutes and a law by Moses your servant. 15 You gave them bread from heaven for their hunger and brought water for them out of the rock for their thirst, and you told them to go in to possess the land that you had sworn to give them.
THIS IS JUST A PARTIAL ACCOUNTING of what God has done.
Goodness and mercy HAD BEEN following David & Israel so much already.
BUT THERE WAS A NEW SONG TO SING…as they expected a coming Messiah.
(Probably contrasted with Moses’s song in Exodus 15)
I like SOME remixes…
Psalm 98 is a bit of a REMIX of Psalm 96
The new song announced in Psalm 96 is “remixed” here with a reminder that Israel is an essential partner in God’s missional expansion to the Gentiles.
All the way back to the beginning of time, we can trace the line — GOD IS A SAVING GOD; A DELIVERING GOD!
GOD’S PEOPLE…

1. SING OF HIS SALVATION

Psalm 98:1–3 ESV
1 Oh sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things! His right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him. 2 The Lord has made known his salvation; he has revealed his righteousness in the sight of the nations. 3 He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness to the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.
SING - making a joyful noise / the song of our hearts
TO THE LORD / ABOUT THE LORD

FOR HE HAS DONE MARVELOUS THINGS
PSALMIST’S CONTEXT:
This psalm was written to praise the Lord for a great victory over Israel’s enemies (“salvation,” vv. 1–3),
perhaps the victory of the Medes and Persians over Babylon (Dan. 5) that led to the return of the Jewish exiles to their land (Ezra 1).
Some of the vocabulary in the psalm reflects the language of Isaiah the prophet, who in chapters 40–66 of his book wrote about the “exodus” of the Jews from Babylon (44:23; 49:13; 51:3; 52:9–10; 59:16; 63:5).
What God did for HIS PEOPLE showed the Gentile nations a REAL demonstration of His faithfulness to His covenant and His love for His chosen people.
The Psalmist seems to be looking beyond a mere local victory.
How do you know?
He writes about the nations (v. 2), the earth (vv. 3, 4, 9), and the world (vv. 7, 9).
THIS PSALM IS POINTING TO SOMETHING GREATER / SOMEONE GREATER!
YES - TO THE LORD - YAHWEH that the OT Saints knew and worshiped and loved and served and sang of…
BUT IF THEY THOUGHT EGYPT WAS SOMETHING…IF YOU THOUGHT BABYLONIAN COLLAPSE WAS SOMETHING…
NOTE: One of the ways we know it’s talking about JESUS is that “RIGHT HAND” comment
The “holy arm” and “right hand” in verse 1 are the means through which salvation is accomplished.
BUT THE MEANS MENTIONED ARE POINTING TO A PERSON
SCHOLARS connect the dots for us, like this:
Isaiah 52:10, “The ‘holy arm’ who is also the ‘right hand’ is the means—the person—of salvation.”
We know that Hebrews 10:12 affirms Jesus sitting at the right hand of the Father, following his work of salvation for us.
There are lots of Scripturest that tell us that Jesus is at the Father’s right hand: Acts 2:33; 5:31; 7:55; Romans 8:34; Ephesians 1:20; Colossians 3:1; Hebrews 1:3, 13; 8:1; 12:2; and 1 Peter 3:22.
We know that the ‘right hand’ that worked salvation refers to Christ Jesus” (Rothra, “Christmas Prophecy about Jesus”)
SO WE’RE NOT JUST SINGING ABOUT SALVATION as some abstract thing that happened TO US…
WE SING A NEW SONG TO / FOR / ABOUT OUR SAVIOR - JESUS CHRIST!
GOD’S PEOPLE SING OF HIS MARVELOUS SALVATION
GOD’S PEOPLE

2. MAGNIFY HIM WITH JOY

Psalm 98:4–8 ESV
4 Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises! 5 Sing praises to the Lord with the lyre, with the lyre and the sound of melody! 6 With trumpets and the sound of the horn make a joyful noise before the King, the Lord! 7 Let the sea roar, and all that fills it; the world and those who dwell in it! 8 Let the rivers clap their hands; let the hills sing for joy together (9) before the LORD
Look at the words…and the expressions of JOY there in this middle portion of the song.
(LOOK BACK AT THE VERSES)
We don’t SING as those WHO HAVE NO SAVIOR!
We don’T LIVE as those WHO HAVE NO JOY!
6,000 Plus Illustrations for Communicating Biblical Truths (Hebrew Joy) NO language has as many words for joy and rejoicing as does Hebrew.
OT = 13 Hebrew roots, in 27 different words
Connected to joy or joyfulness in worship.
Hebrew rituals with God as the source of joy were quite different than other faiths of the East!
PURE JOY = God is THE SOURCE AND THE OBJECT
Psalm 16:11 ESV
11 You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
THIS IS NOT QUIET JOY OR MUTED JOY…
THIS IS LOUD JOY THAT
THE KING OF THE AGES
THE GOD OF GLORY
THE CREATOR OF THE UNIVERSE
THE ONLY PERFECTLY RIGHTEOUS, PURE, TRULY MAGNIFICENT BEING
WOULD SO LOVE THE WORLD
SO LOOK ON OUR SINFUL STATE
SO LEAN OUR WAY…
IN THAT WHILE WE WERE SINNING SIN TO THE MAX
GOD SENT HIS ONLY SON
JESUS CHRIST CAME FROM HEAVEN TO THIS EARTH
CARRIED FOR NINE MONTHS IN THE WOMB OF YOUNG VIRGIN
BORN IN BETHLEHEM
LIVED HIS WHOLE LIFE WITHOUT SIN OR ANY HINT OF SIN
PERFORMED MIRACLES -
SPOKE THE WORD OF GOD
DID THE WORK OF GOD
SHOWED THE HEART OF GOD
AS THE ONLY SON OF GOD
CALLED EVERYONE TO FOLLOW HIM AS THE TRUE AND ETERNAL MESSIAH
THAT CALL SOUNDED LIKE THIS: “REPENT AND BELIEVE THE GOSPEL”
BUT HIS PEOPLE, entrinched in their ways, would NOT have Him!
“We’ll not have this MAN to rule over us!”
SO, DESPISED AND REJECTED THEY HUNG HIM HIGH ON CALVARY’S CROSS AFTER A SHAM TRIAL
AND THERE ON THAT CROSS JESUS DID WHAT ONLY HE COULD DO:
HIS SIN-BEARING, SUBSTITUTIONARY DEATH satisfied the righteous anger of God and appeased His wrath towards all who would believe in Him.
HIS DEATH ON THAT CROSS PROVIDED THE FREE GIFT OF SALVATION FOR ALL WHO CALL UPON HIS NAME!
HE WAS BURIED in a rich man’s tomb
BUT ON THE THIRD DAY, He raised Himself from the dead.
He came walking out of that tomb a risen, living, victorious, Savior.
HE ASCENDED to heaven, He is now seated at the right hand of God the Father, and whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
He is mighty to save to the uttermost all who call upon Him.
We shouldn’t need a song from the worship leader TO GET US AMPED UP.
When we fix our eyes on JESUS, we are joyfully, joyously, a people of JOY who MAGNIFY THE LORD TOGETHER!
"Joy is the flag flying high above the castle of the heart, announcing that the King is in residence there."
When we are a people of JOY, we magnify His goodness.
Psalm 34:3 ESV
3 Oh, magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together!
John would say it this way…MAKING MUCH OF JESUS!
John 3:30 ESV
30 He must increase, but I must decrease.”
We say that with JOY!
GOD’S PEOPLE SING OF HIS GREAT AND MARVELOUS SALVATION!
GOD’S PEOPLE MAGNIFY THE LORD WITH JOY!
GOD’S PEOPLE…

3. LOOK FORWARD TO HIS FAITHFUL REIGN

Psalm 98:8–9 ESV
8 Let the rivers clap their hands; let the hills sing for joy together 9 before the Lord, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with equity.
Notice the Psalmist is looking ahead to the LORD’s COMING…
The Psalmist has already alluded to Christ’s FIRST ADVENT - as Savior!
Now He points us, singing, joyfully magnifying this KING who shall return
Why does the world rejoice at the coming judgment?
Because those who submit willingly to God will have nothing to fear.
John catches a glimpse of this in REVELATION 19
This return is what the writer of Psalm 98 is calling for us to celebrate. Cole concludes, “And so, when you hear or sing ‘Joy to the World,’ make sure that Jesus’ coming is truly a source of joy for you and not a cause of fear!” (Cole, “Joy to the World”).
Revelation 19:11–16 ESV
11 Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war. 12 His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems, and he has a name written that no one knows but himself. 13 He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God. 14 And the armies of heaven, arrayed in fine linen, white and pure, were following him on white horses. 15 From his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron. He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty. 16 On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.
This is cause for celebration!
Jesus Christ is the righteous judge and redeemer.
The Bible clearly points to a future restoration of all things through Christ!
This TRUTH should motivate us and cause us as disciple-making-disciples to live in joy and anticipation.
Despite your current struggles, Despite the international state of affairs…
THE REALITY OF CHRIST’S SOON RETURN WILL CAUSE ALL CREATION TO ROAR!
THE REALITY OF CHRIST’S RETURN SHOULD BRING ASSURANCE IN US AND PRAISE FROM US!
Titus 2:11–14 ESV
11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, 12 training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, 13 waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, 14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.
1 John 3:1–3 ESV
1 See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2 Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. 3 And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.
Here is a misapplied verse BUT IT FITS HERE!
1 John 4:17–18 ESV
17 By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.
