John 16:5 – 33. You will have trouble in the world – but I have overcome the world.
Jesus continuing to encourage his disciples before he is going to lay down his life for al who would believe in him. He will explain how they will be full of sorrow, and the world rejoice. But that they sorrow will be turned to Joy.
The passages and the last chapters are very inserting as they give us glimpse in to how God the father and God the son and God the Holy Spirt are relating to one another, giving glory to and bringing praise to one another.
And Jesus will explain what the role of the Holy Spirt the helper the Spirt of truth, will do when He comes, to the disciples and the world.
Jesus will continue to talk about his departure, that he will go away, and that will make the disciples filled with sorrow. But that praying in Jesus’ name they might receive and their joy be full. Ending todays reading with a promise and a fact. In this word you will have trouble, but take heart I have overcome the world. (and the encouragement is that there is peace in Jesus).
But let’s read…
5-7 Jesus saying he will depart, - and that makes the disciples sad, - Jesus saying: the truth is that is for the disciples advantage that Jesus depart – because if he does not the Holy Spirt that Jesus will send will not come to the disciples.
8-11 The function of the Holy Spirt – will convict people of sin, the sin that people have not believed in Jesus as he was sent from God, that he is the son of God, the messiah, that he is God the son, righteousness – that Jesus did go back to the father, and that the followers should be righteous, in Jesus. Judgment – that Satan is defeated and judged, the world and is order has lost, God is victorious.
For all that have trusted in Jesus as Lord God and savior, repented and followed him, that is what happened, you were convicted of sin, and understood that Jesus is the savoir, that was able to take away sin, and God send him to show people his love for the world. Sin can be taken care of in Jesus.
Jesus is righteous – and the Holy Spirt makes us able in Christ to be and do and live in a way the shows – righteousness.
Judgement that everyone will be judged – first the devil for his rebellion then all his workers and demons, and then all that reject who Jesus is. – our hope is that Jesus is the righteous one the one who makes a way for us. And we can pray that The Holy Spirt convictour friends, family, neighbor – and lets them see that Jesus is the only way to God, and the Jesus can take away our sin, make us righteous, that the devil and all that rebel against God will and has been judged, and we can stand made righteous by Jesus’ work.
12-15 Jesus know the disciple can’t take more teaching – he does say the: The spirt of truth – Jesus is the truth as he said earlier – The Holy Spirt is true – and that The Holy Spirt will guide them in truth, because like Jesus, the Holy Spirt does not speak on His own but only what He hears from Jesus and God, - and declare what will happen. And the Holy Spirt will glorify Jesus as Jesus has gloried God. Because he will help the disciples understand Jesus’ teachings, and all Gods teaching he will teach the disciples. All that is the fathers is Jesus, and they will make it known by the Holy Spirt, Amazing the way the 3-1 God works. – more?
16-18 Jesus made this statement back in chapter 7 to the people and some was thinking he would go teach the Greeks or that he might kill himself. Jesus here saying it again to his disciples – who don’t understand what Jesus means, and that makes sense. They don’t know the story of what Jesus will do, and for some reason it is hidden form them, even if Jesus has said it many times that he is going to be handed over to the gentiles by the religious authorities and killed, - he will lay his life down for the sheep, and then take it up again and walk out of the grave. Death has no power Jesus, he did not sin, but died for other people’s sin that they might come to God. And God showed his love for the world in that way.
19-22 Jesus knowing that his disciples are confused and don’t understand what he is saying, responds Amen Amen. The world will rejoice, - and you will lament and be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn in to Joy, as after a woman has given birth, she rejoices in the new life. You will have sorrow, now but I will see you again, the great hope Jesus will come to them again, - then their hearts will rejoice in a way no one can take away. (that is like the blessed, hope we have that we are not seeing Jesus now but we will see and be with him).
23-24 Jesus says again as he did in 13, in that day the disciples will ask the father in Jesus’ name, and that when God gives Jesus us glorified, - (for the mission of Jesus not whatever you want). And that in 24 Jesus ask and you will revie that your joy may be full, asking in Jesus’ name, - knowing that Jesus was send from the Father and is God and the light of the world, the savior messiah, king og Kings, lord of Lords, understanding that and praying to that father in his name, they and we my have full joy in Jesus Christ.
25-27 Jesus revealing more about his relationship with his father – saying that now he will speak more clearly and not in figures parables, he will plainly speak about the Father, then the disciples will ask in Jesus name, to the Father and Jesus states that the Father loves the disciples, because they loved Jesus, and that they have believed that Jesus came from God. (Wow what a great passage that the Father loved the disciples because they loved Jesus. – What about us and you how does the words sit with you? Are you loved by the father do you love Jesus; do you believe that he came from God?)
28- Jesus saying again where he is from, the father and that is where he came to the world that was made v through and for him. And now he is leaving the world to go to the father. From the father to the world to the father. And to the cross, to the grave, out of the grave and to the father.
29-31 The disciples respond, with what seems a oh what you say is right and we believe what you say, not really understanding what Jesus said. – I was reminded that is like when people have to repeated something like a name, or what they said, and – even the 3-4 time you just nod and say okay. Why do I say that, well look at their response and Jesus response to them. Verse 30 you know all things, and don’t need people to question you, - and that is why we believe you come from God. They kind of just repeat what Jesus said. Jesus ask them Do you now believe? I think that incates what I just said, that they are saying what they think Jesus wants them to say, but not really understating what they are saying. That is why Jesus asks again do you now believe, -
32- because in a few hours you will flee, and leave me alone, - but I am not alone the Father is with me.
33. Jesus finishing this part with stating the reason for what he has said: “I have said this that you may have peace in me. (ever wonder where true peace is found? Only in Jesus) Why would they and we need peace? Jesus said because in this world you will have tribulation. Therefore, when that happens for the disciples, Jesus have prepared them that they would recall his words, and know that peace is only found in him.
The world is so bad and scary, that could be true, but Jesus is clear, I have overcome the world, the world and all its opposition to God, and that is no match for Jesus. I am where you find peace, and I am the one that have overcome the world, devil sin, - I am where you can find peace and Joy, - by faith, by grace understand, believing trusting that Jesus is from God, that Jesus will send God the Holy Spirt, and that God will be glorified when the disciples will ask in Jesus name, when the Holy Spirt will bear witness about Jesus teachings and so will the disciples, to Gods glory.
Will it be easy, no, - it will not, will there be peace, that is found in Jesus Christ, but the world rage yes until Jesus returned and make all things new. – but looking at the disciple’s and Paul, and the first believers they did not have easy lives – but the gave their lives to witness about Jesus, and God was much glorified and they did impossible feats in the power of the Holy Spirt and with the peace of Jesus Christ in them.
How are you encouraged when you read about God the father, the function of the Holy Spirt and Jesus? The way they work together, in revealing, teaching, giving glory to one another?
What about the Holy Spirts work? Convicting about sin, righteousness and Judgment, - We can pray and ask Jesus for the Holy Spirt to do that, - as I said earlier. That when God does Jesus will get glory, the Holy sprit open a persons eyes to Jesus, that they might see and get to know Jesus, and live for and find peace in Jesus. – Have God done this in your life? Opened your eyes for your sin? Your need for Jesus? That you know that all will be judged by Jesus? If not pray that by God’s grace, God would be glorified in granting your request in Jesus’ name, that the father will get glory and the Holy Spirt open your eyes to see Jesus.
If you do your life will not be without problems, or trouble we can’t expect it to be easy to live as a follower of Jesus in the world their will be sin and suffering, and people that think you are crazy, - but as you bare witness about Jesus, where he came for what he did, and that he is coming again, you can live at peace in Jesus Christ even if there is much trouble, and God will be glorified as we pray in Jesus name, listen to the Holy Spirt, as believer’s we have all we need in Christ, and given all power we need for our life in Jesus Christ, and walk in the good deeds God has laid out for us to walk in to give him, Jesus and the Holy Spirt Gory.
