Hello, this is Kenneth, and welcome to Dwell.

For the next few minutes, I invite you to join me as we look to our Great King by opening our hearts to hear from Him through the words of the Bible.

As we begin, let us remember that God calls His people, young and old, to be still and know that He is God. Let's take a few seconds to calm and quiet our minds, so that we can hear him better.

Opening Prayer‌ Loving Lord, we delight in your counsel. Today, help our hearts be glad as we receive your words. (from Psalm 16:7,9)

Passage

Today our passage is from Isaiah chapter 40, verse 8 (ESV): The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.

Exhortation

Humans come and go on this earth. We are here for a little while, and then we depart. Ever since Adam and Eve left the Garden, this has been the way of all the earth.

Now what’s interesting is that while we are here, we humans do a lot of talking. Did you know that the average person will say about 350 million words in their lifetime? That is a lot! And words are powerful things. The book of Proverbs says that “death and life are in the power of the tongue.” (18:21) In all of our talking, we say things that can be wildly important, but we also say so much about the small things in life. I’ve had entire conversations about what reading glasses I should wear, or why I prefer wooden bookmarks over paper ones. I’m talking about talking right now!

So let me get to the point of today’s passage. When we look at the big picture of humanity, we see that billions of people have lived out their lives, each speaking hundreds of millions of words, but we all are like grass, in our most beautiful moments, we are like the flowers of the field. But, eventually the grass withers and the flowers fade.

Humans are frail, fragile, and fickle - meaning we can change our minds in a moment. We can bring life or we can bring death. Even in our best moments, we are not very dependable.

This is not so with God and his words. God doesn’t change, and his words are sure and dependable. God is not here for a moment and then gone. God does not wither or fade. The prophet Isaiah, a man tasked with bringing the words of God to people, says that the word of God will stand forever, even though he himself and all of those he wrote and spoke to are long gone.

While we are here, in this moment that we have been given, we are invited to build our short lives on the solid ground of God’s word.

Call to Action Let’s take a moment, right now, to thank God for speaking true and sure words, words we can build our lives on.

Father in heaven, you are a God who speaks, a God who does not grow weary, you are the invisible, immortal God. Thank you for speaking to us through your Word. May we hear and heed your Word in the power of the Spirit. We ask this in Jesus’ name, Jesus, the Word made Flesh. Amen.
