Psalm 23 A Psalm of David. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord Forever.
El Roi - The God who sees.
Genesis 16:13–15 Then she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, You-Are-the-God-Who-Sees; for she said, “Have I also here seen Him who sees me?” Therefore the well was called Beer Lahai Roi; observe, it is between Kadesh and Bered. So Hagar bore Abram a son; and Abram named his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael.
Hagar is not the most popular woman in the scripture. She is the woman who has an illigitamate son with Abraham and Sarah gets upset with her and drives her out of the home. There was no such this as co parenting or child support. She was probably going to be alone but God saw her plight and interviened. God cares for you when no one else will.
The LORD who sees, cares for me.
Psalm 23:1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
God watches over you every day. He is the good shepherd just like he was watching for hagar just like he left the 99 and searched for the one. He cares for you. no matter who you are He cares for you. A lot of people feel that no one cares for them, they need to know The LORD who sees the LORD is my shepherd the God who cares
You need the care of the Shepherd.
Isaiah 53:6 All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.
Sheep are the animal that have the least ammount of protection. I don’t know who came up with that but I read it a few times. Other animals have God given attributes to care for themselves. Snakes have venom Dogs have teeth and an amazing smell. Skunks have their stink and other animals have numerous defense mechanisms but not sheep they are helpless without the shepherd. Sheep will get their wool wet and then they end up drowning because they can’t escape the stream by themselves. That is pretty aweful.
You can’t help yourself. When you stand before God you will never be able to stand their on your own. You need the nercy of Jesus Christ to save you from your sins.
God is a faithful God. He watches over and cares for you.
Genesis 48:15 And he blessed Joseph, and said: “God, before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked, The God who has fed me all my life long to this day,”
At the end of his life Jacob reflects over all that he has gone through and acknowledges that God has taken care of and fed me all the days of my life. God was good to Him and he had to pass that news onto his long lost (like a sheep)} son Joseph.
Jesus is the LORD our shepherd.
John 10:1–5 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. And when he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. Yet they will by no means follow a stranger, but will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.”
The sheep have a relationship with the shepherd all others are imposters and are out to destroy the sheep. It is important that you now only know that God sees you and cares for you but that you know Him with a relationship with a shepherd.
Jehovah Jireh - The LORD our God provides.
Genesis 22:13–14 Then Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and there behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son. And Abraham called the name of the place, The-Lord-Will-Provide; as it is said to this day, “In the Mount of the Lord it shall be provided.”
The LORD provides that which we lack.
Psalm 23:1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
The LORD provides that which we need.
Matthew 6:11 Give us this day our daily bread.
God provided Jesus our salvation.
Zechariah 12:10 And I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and supplication; then they will look on Me whom they pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son, and grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn.
God will provide Himself the Lamb!
Genesis 22:7–8 But Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” Then he said, “Look, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” And Abraham said, “My son, God will provide for Himself the lamb for a burnt offering.” So the two of them went together.
Jesus is the lamb that God provided to save the world.
John 1:29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
The Good Shepherd is also lamb slain for our sins. It is in His sacrifice that we are saved. Never forget how important God is to you. He saved you from your sins He laid down His life providing you with salvation, God is protector (the God who sees) and provider (the God who saves)
Jehovah Shalom - The LORD our peace
Psalm 23:2 He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters.
God is the calm you need when you feel overwhelmed.
Judges 6:22–24 Now Gideon perceived that He was the Angel of the Lord. So Gideon said, “Alas, O Lord God! For I have seen the Angel of the Lord face to face.” Then the Lord said to him, “Peace be with you; do not fear, you shall not die.” So Gideon built an altar there to the Lord, and called it The-Lord-Is-Peace. To this day it is still in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
Talk about needing peace. Gideon was in the middle of it. God was about to have him face the mighty mideonites. An army of 135,000 and he was going to have to do it with 300 men. He also was going to tear down an altar of Baal and erecte an altar to the LORD putting His life on the line. Gideon was in the middle of the storm and found peace when He needed it the most.
In Jesus, we have peace with God.
Romans 5:1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,
It is because of Jesus that we can have peace with God today. Because we are justified by faith. Because we believe in Him He sets us right before God and we are good in His place.
May the peace of God be with you.
Philippians 4:9 The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.
I don’t think that everyone here knows the God of peace. The stress of this life overwhelms you. You collapse under the pressure. What you need to do is have the calm of the peace of God. memorize Psalm 23 or Philippians 4.9 which lets you have the peace of God in your life.
Jehovah Rophi - The LORD who heals
Exodus 15:26 and said, “If you diligently heed the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in His sight, give ear to His commandments and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians. For I am the Lord who heals you.”
At the waters of Marah the children of Israel found bitter water which had death in the water and God told Moses to throw a tree into it to heal the bitter waters to make them sweet
He heals you body, mind, and soul.
Psalm 23:3 He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake.
Every Sunday we have a long list of prayer requests and they are all important needs. But you want to know what else God heals. Your broken heart. Your scared soul you emotional wounds. God is a God who heals.
God is able to heal in all things.
Numbers 12:11–16 So Aaron said to Moses, “Oh, my lord! Please do not lay this sin on us, in which we have done foolishly and in which we have sinned. Please do not let her be as one dead, whose flesh is half consumed when he comes out of his mother’s womb!” So Moses cried out to the Lord, saying, “Please heal her, O God, I pray!” Then the Lord said to Moses, “If her father had but spit in her face, would she not be shamed seven days? Let her be shut out of the camp seven days, and afterward she may be received again.” So Miriam was shut out of the camp seven days, and the people did not journey till Miriam was brought in again. And afterward the people moved from Hazeroth and camped in the Wilderness of Paran.
Miriam had spoken against Moses and that was a sin. God gave her leprosy for her afront on His leadership and then she had to repent and God was faitful to forgive. A lot of the problems that we have in this life are our own fault. We deserve what is coming to us. But God is able even to heal when we face problems that we pur ourselves in.
Jehovah Tsidkenu - The LORD our righteousness.
Jeremiah 23:6 In His days Judah will be saved, And Israel will dwell safely; Now this is His name by which He will be called: THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.
Jesus is coming again. I am talking about his second coming and not the rapture two different things. It will come when God intends Him to and when He comes His name the ruler and commander will be the LORD our righteousness Jehovah think about the words of How great thou art When Christ shall come with shout of acclimation And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart! > Then I shall bow in humble adoration > And there proclaim, “My God, how great Thou art!
He is the way of righteousness.
Psalm 23:3 He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake.
We do not stand before God in our righteousness but in the righteousness of Jesus.
His righteousness is our righteousness.
2 Corinthians 5:21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
There is a word that has come up a few times justification. That is the act of restoring to what is right . In His death Jesus restored us to a right relationship with him.
Jehovah Nissi - The LORD our banner
Exodus 17:11–15 And so it was, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed; and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed. But Moses’ hands became heavy; so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. And Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. So Joshua defeated Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword. Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write this for a memorial in the book and recount it in the hearing of Joshua, that I will utterly blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.” And Moses built an altar and called its name, The-Lord-Is-My-Banner;
The Israelites battle with the Amalekites is a key moment in the Old Testament. The children of Israel had just left the land of Egypt and they are facing the great Amalekites the wicked blood lusting people and they faced it and God gave them courage as Moses held his hands up and God gave them courage.
The LORD is our courage.
Psalm 23:4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
When you are walking through difficult things God is your courage. He is the one who goes before Israel into battle. Do you know why Israel is succesful in their military campaigns. Is it because of the wisdom of Netanyahu or the power and carisma of Donald J Trump. NO!!!! It is because God is the banner of Israel. Maybe have those men been put their for such a time as this, absolutely! God is the one who goes before Israel.
Yahweh Shammah - The LORD is there
Ezekiel 48:35 All the way around shall be eighteen thousand cubits; and the name of the city from that day shall be: THE LORD IS THERE.
That is the best thing about heaven the LORD is there and you will spend eternity with Him.
The LORD is with you today and forever.
Matthew 28:20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
God's presence is comfort.
Exodus 3:12 So He said, “I will certainly be with you. And this shall be a sign to you that I have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain.”
You are with me.
Psalm 23:4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
Jehovah Mekaddishkhem - The LORD who sanctifies
Psalm 23:5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over.
God set sus apart from the world.
Exodus 31:13 “Speak also to the children of Israel, saying: ‘Surely My Sabbaths you shall keep, for it is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I am the Lord who sanctifies you.”
God sets us apart from the world He removes us from the world and makes us on our way to heaven. We are anointed in the Holy Spirit and therefore are no longer citizens of this earth but citizens of heaven,
WE have talked about a lot of names of God which is your favorite which do you need to cling to. Tell me which one is God working on your heart today.
