Enguos is an adjective formed by the compouding of the preposition en (1706) and enguē, “security” (which according to Moulton and Howard is probably from an old form for hand. Enguos can mean “offering a pledge, surety” (as an adjective), or “one who guarantees” (as a substantive).

Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.

We must seek an intermediary who is not only man but is also God, so that the blessed mortality of this intermediary may, by his intervention, lead men from their mortal misery to blessed immortality. It was necessary both that this mediator not fail to become mortal and that he not remain mortal. And he did, in fact, become mortal—not by any weakening of the divinity of the Word but rather by assuming the weakness of the flesh. Jesus not only saves eternally but continues to intercede for believers. His endless life means a continual advocacy, making faith personal and ongoing for each believer. This powerful truth should reassure Christians of an unbroken connection with God, despite their failures or doubts.

For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens.

Consider the perfect, singular sacrifice of Jesus, contrasting it with the repeated and imperfect sacrifices of previous priests. Jesus’ holiness and sinlessness qualify Him uniquely as a flawless sacrifice.His once-for-all offering instantly and forever reconciles believers to God.

He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins and then for those of the people, since he did this once for all when he offered up himself.

For the law appoints men in their weakness as high priests, but the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints a Son who has been made perfect forever.
